Should Spanking Your Kid Be Illegal?

It's a question a political reporter might want to put to Mitt Romney and the Five Brothers, as the Massachusetts state legislature is currently considering legislation that would make it a crime for parents to spank their children in their own homes. Does Mitt support the bill? Inquiring minds want to know!

why not just drop all the screaming, fit-throwing three year olds off at the state legislature, and let them deal with the tantrums?
they apparently think they're the 'know-how' authorities on the subject, so let 'em prove it
they can return them later as well behaved 19 year olds
I suppose their main goal is to let us raise them (they way they think best) until they are adults so they can take them and use them in their illegal & immoral wars? Unfortunately banning spanking does not protect children. People who want to hurt children will. And parents who are uneducated/unprepared for childrearing...well that might be a huge percentile, I haven't seen the numbers but you don't need a degree to to be a parent.

It's up to parents to decide how to raise their children. There's a clear difference between spanking and beating. I'd rather be spanked by loving parents than grow up undisciplined and be beaten by the police.

from Epoch website:
Five European countries - Sweden (in 1979), Finland (in 1983), Denmark (in 1985), Norway (in 1987) and Austria (in 1989) have adopted laws which prohibit parents hitting their children. The purpose in each case has been educational; to change attitudes, not to punish parents. There are no criminal penalties attached to the bans. The reforms have not led to a rush of children taking their parents to court

4. The phrase "Spare the rod and spoil the child" is not from the Bible but from Samuel Butler's "Hudibras", a 17th Century satirical poem. The poem, like his novel, The Way of All Flesh, was written to expose and denounce violence against children.
While the "rod" is mentioned many times in the Bible, it is only in the Book of Proverbs that this word is used in connection with parenting. The book of Proverbs is attributed to Solomon, an extremely cruel man whose harsh methods of discipline led his own son, Rehoboam, to become a tyrannical and oppressive dictator who only narrowly escaped being stoned to death for his cruelty. In the Bible there is no support for harsh discipline outside of Solomon's Proverbs. By contrast, the writings in the Gospels, the most important books in the Bible for Christians, contain the teachings of Jesus Christ, who urged mercy, forgiveness, humility, and non-violence. Jesus saw children as being close to God, and urged love, never punishment.

reflected in social-science research stretching back decades. Most studies show a link between physical discipline and aggression, antisocial behaviour, a more troubled parent-child bond, and mental-health issues in children. When they become parents themselves, these children are more inclined to be abusive themselves. The studies also found that children who were spanked were less disposed to learn a lesson from the mistake that invited the spanking.
Research shows a powerful connection between physical discipline and child abuse, which can start as a spanking but turn into a savage beating. A major study on the incidence of child abuse in Canada released last year found that 69 per cent of 14,200 substantiated cases of physical abuse started with a parent punishing a child.

This bill is racist. It is aimed at the Black woman. A Black mother needs to be strong to handle her head strong boys. You rich white liberal women don't have the same problems that we have, so don't tell me how to raise my children.

How did physical punishment become such an important part of black culture?
Is it really a modern need or does it come from history?
I suggest Black women are smart enough and dedicated enough parents to learn a new way. That it is time to treat back children, and all children in a thoughtful manner.
Isn't it racist when black criminals go to jail but white criminals get off (and therefore aren't even considered criminals, for example Jena 6)? Then isn't it racist to say a black head strong boy needs to be "handled" but a white head strong ones don't.

It's insane! There is already a law against abuse. Imagine the harm such a law can do. You will have the courts full of cases; neighbors will be calling on neighbors; everyone in a custody battle will use this law; Not to mention doubling the DSS caseload - they're not overwhelmed already. How good would it be for a child to think they got their parents in trouble with the police for being bad - devastating-more so than a spanking. This law is unenforceable anyway. I grew up when spanking was mandatory - "spare the rod, spoil the child" - believe me, I'd rather be spanked than sit through a lecture on what a disappointment I AM.
Put a law on screaming and yelling in front of the kids - name-calling, etc. etc. Those effect the kids as much.
Stop wasting time on this. I don't spank and I do believe there are other ways to discipline, but parents need to figure that out themselves. Stay out of our homes unless it is abuse. Spanking is not abuse.

I believe spanking children should be legal. As a kid I get spanked a lot and it works. It makes me obey my dad more.
My dad says he loves me and that is why he spanks me so hard every time i disobey.
He also told me not to be afraid to be spanked and every time i do something bad i am supposed to go to him and ask him for a spanking, and this is what i do.
I know that my dad loves me and that is why i accept his spanking.
I reccommed every parent to spank his kid. it works.

Yes, so why ban it? I think that as long as the spanking is not severe (like bleeding or bruised) we should use spanking.

I am 17 years old and i personally believe spnking should not be banned. I believe that without spanking kids will be afraid of nothing. Without the discipline such as spanking kids will look at events like they are no big deal they will not get in very much trouble if they do it anyway. Without discipline and repremand the kids will continue to misbehave and even get worse. Therefore bringing the economy down more and more each year. After all, children are the future!
