Hillary Hatred on Display
I'm at the DNC's fall meeting in Vienna, VA, today. I'll hear all the Democratic presidential candidates speak and then write something up for your consumption.
On the way here, though, I got into a conversation with my cabbie about politics. We saw Hillary Clinton signs lining the road up to the meeting's venue. "I hate that woman," he said. I laughed uncomfortably. "I don't think she'll win the nomination," he said. "Too many people hate her. Even Democrats. But I think the Democrats are in a box. If they are against her, they look like they don't like her because she's a woman. And if they are against Obama, it looks like it's because he's black."
I asked for a reciept. He reached for one. As he turned to hand it to me, he said, "And then there's the fact that he's a Muslim."
I stopped. "No, he isn't. He belongs to a Christian church in Chicago." I explained that the media had investigated the rumor and proved it false. He didn't looked convinced. "What's with the funny name?" he asked. So that Muslim controversy still has legs.
But what I want to focus on is the hatred of Hillary. It is widespread and nasty, more than the media is usually willing to mention. So is she going to be a drag on the Democrats in down-ballot races? Will she hurt the Dems in Senate races, House races, local races? Democrats in conservative states say that she will, but it remains an open question.
Tom Schaller, writing in TNR, says that Hillary won't be a "drag queen."
Clinton's down-ballot drag are overwrought. Though she could have a marginal effect on a few races here and there, our electoral system has become so shock-absorbent that presidential candidates barely have a down-ballet effect anymore. In 2004 George W. Bush posted what by today's lights was a solid win, and yet what coattails did he have? The Republicans made no net gain among governors; they added four U.S. senators (their biggest achievement) and a mere four U.S. house seats; and they lost about five dozen state legislative seats overall and net control of four state legislative chambers.
He gets into the details of the polls and takes a look at some state races. If you're an election geek, check it out.

If Hillary does win the nomination you can people like myself will not vote again.
Why?
Because anyone with a brain can see that Hillary will keep the status quo in this government,,her voting recoed shows that .She has voted for every bill Bush has pushed to gain more power to squash our personal freedoms in this country. Her views are far more conservative than they are liberal and she is not for ending this war in Iraq she wants to keep the military there indeffinately.
Her campaign money has come from large corporations that you can believe she will give special interest to if she becomes president. She is for the big corporations and her health care plan would give big bucks to private HMO's .
Hillary will not help this country she will hurt it.

one has to wonder about congress members and senators who consistently vote to allow increased powers in the executive branch, and then seek to occupy the executive seat
at least i have to wonder, since i've noticed that tendency on the part of more presidential candidates than just Hillary

If you don't listen to Rush, Hannity and the other right wing talk radio fools, you don't know what the general population believes to be fact. But I don't blame anyone for NOT listening.

I'm a Democrat. I don't like Hillary because of her voting record and her corporate ties. I will not vote for her if she wins the nomination. People call me a hater because of that, but in truth, I don't see much of a difference between her and a Republican.
If Democrats nominate her, they are taking the left wing for granted. And we are very, very tired of it.

Hillary will lose many votes because she has been a collaborator in the wars, in the continued funding for the wars, because she has been part and parcel of a Democratic House and Senate that have voted to enable wire tapping, imprisonment without habeas corpus, military tribunals, because she has voted with the banks and insurance companies and against the interests of ordinary Americans. She has supported the loss of rights that go back to the Magna Carter. He has demonstrated that her career has greater importance than the lives of millions of other people. Never mind that she will inflame the right wing and encourage voting by Republicans, she will depress the general vote of Democrats who will sit this one out rather than accept voting for her. People don't much like Hillary because Hillary hasn't had the backbone to stand up for anything of importance.

I'm willing to give her a chance. And ANY democrat is better than another republican. Life was better under Bill Clinton, and I think Hillary has the potential to do more - because she is so directed.

So, a lot of people think that things will change if we elect Hillary, Obama, or any other Democrat running for office. We are only fooling ourselves, things will remain status quo. All I can say to all the presidential hopefuls, Dems or Repubs, clowns to the left and jokers to the right.

I'm always amazed how terrific she is in these situations, I think the main gossip - as I see it, is that Clinton can take care of herself and America (and if need be - the rest of the globe) just like a Commander-in-Chief should do. I'm always amazed how strong and competent she comes out of all the petty criticism. I feel she is the ONLY hope of this nation - My goodness the woman shines competence in all areas necessary for a President!! But let me tell you Why Hillary - from my pov, of course:
1. To end the war in Iraq. To combat terrorism, strengthen our military and care for our veterans effectively. To restore America’s standing in the world and repair our alliances. To build a more tolerant, united America, working to achieve big goals again with a President who is ready for change and ready to lead from day one.
2. She is a moderate and is experienced in working with all sides of the aisle; can work well with global leaders; is intelligent and has good manners where it counts. She has proven herself a diplomat when visiting more than 80 countries, working with Congress and all interests. However you view Bill, he is a global asset to this country. She is the only candidate with enough EXPERIENCE to lead this country.
3. She is strong where it counts. She has learned from her mistakes, knows how to ask for directions and from whom, and has devoted her ENTIRE adult life to serving this country and its people. When she speaks she deals with the ISSUES not slimy muck and only responds ~ appropriately ~ when absolutely necessary to answer unfounded, erroneous and/or malicious gossip.
4. To achieve universal, affordable healthcare. To create good jobs for middleclass Americans with the right investments in modern infrastructure and in new, clean, energy efficient technologies that reduce our dependence on foreign oil and combat global warming.
5. To provide world class education from universal pre-kindergarten to affordable college for all. To promote 21st century scientific innovation, including stem cell research.
6. To return to fiscal responsibility, move back toward a balanced budget and safeguard Social Security and Medicare for future generations. To restore competence and end cronyism in government with a President who cares about and works for Americans who have been invisible to this administration.
7. MOST IMPORTANT TO ME. I believe that she will end our current “Disaster and War Economy” paradigm and replace it with a Universal Trade / Production / Scholastic / Artistic economy while making the other changes that will promote a NEW paradigm.
For an America that works for ALL Americans - there's only one - Hillary Clinton - President 2008
