Can Fringe Anti-Mormon Fundamentalists Bring Down Romney?

Don't ask me why, but I'm on the email list of several extreme Christian fundamentalist groups. And lately I've received a couple of warnings from them: watch out for Mitt Romney. He's a Mormon.

On Thursday, Romney is scheduled to give (finally) what's being called his "Mormon Speech." Romney recently said, "I can tell you I'm not going to be talking so much about my faith as I am talking about the religious heritage of our country and the role in which it played in the founding of the nation and the role which I think religion should generally play today in our society."

No one really wants to hear Romney expound on the history of religion in the United States. The issue is whether he can persuade conservative conventional Christians that he, as a Mormon, is as good a Christian as they (and Mike Huckabee) are. Why is he delivering such a speech just weeks before the Iowa caucus? Obviously he and his advisers have decided he has no choice, especially with Huckabee, the former Baptist minister, surging in the polls in the Hawkeye State.

There are Christians who consider Mormonism a heretical cult, but there's no telling if the fundamentalists who are gunning for Romney will have any influence on GOP Iowa caucus-goers, a relatively small slice of Iowans dominated by social conservatives.

One outfit called Godvoters.org has put out an email decrying Romney.

It notes that

At the core of Mormonism is the belief that Jesus and Satan used to be human blood brothers in a distant planet - Jesus behaved well according to Mormonism and became a deity in our planet system, while Satan behaved badly and became the devil. Moreover, Mormonism teaches that good conduct as per Mormonism in this life will enable Mormons to become God in a different planet system someday, just like Jesus a generation ago.
A religion which teaches that Jesus - our perfectly pure and holy God and Lord - is the blood brother of Satan - the perfectly evil and sinful creature - is an abomination, and the idea that a creature can become the Creator is precisely what turned Lucifer, the angel of light, into Satan, and is therefore Satanic by nature.

How significant is this group? Its website claims five dozen "bible-based" churches in Iowa are working with its effort to have all the presidential candidates answer a questionnaire that includes such queries as "Do you believe only those who obey Jesus as their master will go to heaven?" and "If you had to choose between God and country, which would you choose?"

Godsvoter.org declares, "Christians are not interested in a history lesson from Governor Romney....Neither are we interested in a sound bite commercial on Mormonism. What we want to hear and what will put our votes into play in his favor is a sincere, unequivocal and genuine repudiation of Mormonism." It wants the former governor of Massachusetts to answer these questions:

1. "Do you believe that Jesus and Satan once were human brothers as Mormonism teaches?"
2. "Do you hope to become God someday as Mormonism teaches that you can become?"
3. "If not, will you at this time renounce Mormonism and sever all ties to it?"

Romney sure ain't going to walk away from his church, and this organization has "fringe" written all over it. But the issue is whether such sentiments are creeping through the GOP electorate in Iowa. Remember, it was a bunch of nobody creeps in South Carolina in 2000 who spread a series of false rumors about John McCain (he had sired a child out of wedlock, he had been brainwashed in Vietnam, his wife was a doper) and who sank his campaign. A similar sort of crusade is not impossible in Iowa. Via emails and whispers, anti-Mormon fundamentalists need only sow doubt among tens of thousands of Iowans to tilt the election.

In the face of that, can Romney's speech create a theological firewall? Perhaps--if it's a helluva speech.

He has $200 million and he's still too cheap to hire Americans - you can't really blame him. He thinks he's better than all of us so he doesn't need to spend his precious money. He never thought for a minute we'd find out, or that we'd care. He doesn't really have any thoughts or platform of his own - he's just a sock puppet who floats any way the wind blows. Don't get me wrong - he LOOKS fabulous! Really beautiful guy, got a great smile - and tall as all get out. My candidate just kinda looks like an old bantam rooster - that's funny 'cause it's so true. Dr. Ron Paul has been fighting the good fight for 20 years now in Congress. You all hear about him as Dr. No, but do you know he authors at least 10 pieces of legislation a year to REDUCE the federal government's power to those enumerated in the Constitution? Sometimes bills, but sometimes Constitutional Amendments too. He believes that if we need to do something that's not in the Constitution we should amend it to allow us to do so LEGALLY. You'll note this post WON'T be followed by one showing all his flip-flops... because there aren't any. I KNOW you've seen us all posting about him - why not take half an hour and see what the buzz is about at www.RonPaul2008.com? Or just look in the Federal Register?

Satan is the blood-brother of Satan? That would explain a lot of thing's. Where do I sign up? I like that good/evil duality, plus the ruling like a God in some Parralel universe. Actually that mirrors a lot of my thinking when I go to my low-paying, menial labor job that thankfully the Mexicans havent taken over yet. Exept in my parralel universe we hunt two faced, lying politicians for sport!

The 2008 Matrix

Hillary (hated deeply by R) vs. Rudy (prolife?now) = Rudy**
Barack (won white-R districts in 2006) vs. Rudy= Obama***
Edwards (white male Southerner with hair) vs. Rudy (northern prolife?now)= Edwards****
Hillary vs. Romney (mormon: CC stays home)= Hillary
BO vs. Romney= BO
Edwards vs. Romney= Edwards
Anyone of the 3 vs. McCain (prochoice, anti-torture, loser in 2000) = Anyone
Anyone of the 3 vs. Huckbee (Baptist preacher, big government, higher taxes) = Anyone

That’s a lot of Democrats winning.
Who is pushing the Hillary is inevitable? Hillary Fans (they don’t know they will lose) & Republicans. Just ask Rove.

** People will vote purely against Clinton, Christian right comes out against HRC.
***Conservative Christians will stay at home
****Rudy can’t clean up in the South, purely because he is from NY.
-The Christian Right is throwing Romney overboard.
-The Washington Military/Industrialist (Neocons) don’t want Huckabee because he really is a Christian.

A study by Mental Health America, released Wednesday, puts Utah as the most depressed state in the U.S. 62% of the population of Utah is Mormon. What might this say about the Mormon religion?

Posted by: Kathleen Flynn Barron on 12/05/07 at 9:45 PM  Respond

It doesn't say anything about Mormonism. You are making an assumption about that correlation were in reality lots of other factors could be driving that. Maybe living in the Utah desert plays a bigger role?

I'm no Mormon apologist BTW and think their belief is just as absurd as Scientology's.

Next to Romney's dignified and moral high ground, these tactics are patently pathetic, showing nothing but religious bigotry. It makes me wonder if these people even read the Bible:

Here is my response (Romney doesn't need to stoop to this. I'll do it for him). Part I:
1. "Do you believe that Jesus and Satan once were human brothers as Mormonism teaches?"

Mormons teach that all mankind are children of God. Isaiah teaches that Lucifer is a man (see Isaiah 14). Moses testified that Lucifer spoke to Adam and Eve, tempting them. When they fell, God asked them what happened, and Eve admitted that she had been beguiled by Lucifer. God then curses him (see Genesis 3). Thousands of years later, the same being spoke to Jesus, tempting him (see Luke 4). Jesus denounced the unrighteous Jews who sought to kill him, by saying that the devil was their father, and he described him as a man that thinks, speaks, and makes choices (see John 8).

Yet, there is not just one devil, but many devils, the followers of Lucifer (see Luke 8). Where did they come from? Mormons teach that they are the fallen angels who kept not their "first estate." What was this estate? How is it that even Michael, the archangel, was intimidated by him? (see Jude). Isaiah called Lucifer the "Son of the Morning" and that he fell from heaven (Lucifer mean light!) What morning does this refer to? When did the fall take place? The answer is that it took place in Heaven, when Michael and his angels cast out Lucifer and his angels (see Rev. 12).

The Mormon doctrine is that all this is part of the drama between good and evil that started among the premortal children of God. It happened because God gave his children their agency, which Lucifer sought to take away. As Jesus said, he was a murderer and lier from the beginning.

I could go on, but what's the use. These people pretend to be defending the Bible, but they don't even understand it. Geesh! Get a grip!

Part II:

2. "Do you hope to become God someday as Mormonism teaches that you can become?"

Again, these people don't even read their own Bible, evidently. They proclaim that Mormons are "polytheistic," because they teach that the God of Israel will exalt the Saints (members of the LDS Church, who are baptized, born again, Christians, who endure to the end) and make them sinless, immortal, Kings and Priests unto the Most High God, who rule and reign in the house of Israel forever, as children of God, and thus heirs of all he has, through Christ, who makes them co-heirs of his, through his shed blood, able to sit with him upon the throne of the Father.

I won't take the time to point out the Biblical references for each of the points of this very precious doctrine, but anybody can easily find them, if they will read the Bible.

Start with doing a word search of the New Testament for the word exalt. It should be an eye opener for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, and hearts to understand.

Part III:

3. "If not, will you at this time renounce Mormonism and sever all ties to it?"

If Romney didn't believe in these things, he wouldn't be a Christian, and he wouldn't have to "renounce Mormonism and sever all ties to it," because he wouldn't be a Mormon and he wouldn't have any ties to it.

The question is, though, will these people believe the Bible and stop persecuting Mormons for believing it? Or, at least, will they do as Romney, this morning, so eloquently explained that we all should do, i.e. give every American the right to follow the dictates of their consciences, and leave religious tests out of politics?

doug, you just confirmed what Godgvoters.org proclaims. It means they were not telling lies. So what do you hate them for? Lying?

Romney's religion is no better or worse than the rest of them. They're all a pack of lies, dogma, fantasy, superstitions, and fearmongering that has devolved over the many centuries into nothing more than a way to exploit people's natural fear of the human condition to line their own pockets and self-perpetuate their mythology.

It would be refreshing to hear any candidate say that their religion is a personal matter that they will not discuss because it doesn't belong on a list of campaign issues. They should go on to explain that the affairs of our government and the affairs of our churches are separate by Constitutional law.

If you are inclined to disagree with that last statement, there are plenty of countries around the world where religion and government are engaged in a Taliban-like embrace. Perhaps you'd be happier there. But if you plan to stick around the US, kindly keep your superstitions to yourself and your grabbastic power plays off of public policy.

-Wexler

I find it interesting that you all have this crying need to define what I believe as a Latter-day Saint. It is obvious from your comments that you have only the slightest clue. Not that any of you really care. Just bigots justifying you stances.

You also might be surprised to learn that the members of the Church vote Republican by a very large percentage - in the 80s. Since you Republicans are really not interested in those six million members who live in the US, do not be surprised when we stay home, or vote Democratic this next year - and in future years too.

By the way it was the "good Baptists" of Missouri and Illinois who murdered my family along with other members of the church and drove them out west. Perhaps some of that bigotry rubbed off in Iowa being that it is so close to Illinois.

You all fit right in with the "good christian" and former governor of Missouri, Gov. Boggs, famous for the order to the state militia to "exterminate" all Latter-say saints fits right in with the rest of you bigots.
