John McCain: Everyone's Second Choice
I know, I know, the thought-process that goes into one pundit's endorsement isn't particularly interesting. But Andrew Sullivan's endorsement of Ron Paul in the GOP race illuminates something about the Republican field more generally.
The top-line summary of Sullivan's politics is that he's a small-government conservative. As such, it's no surprise that he supports the libertarian in the race. What's interesting, though, is that Sullivan's second choice is McCain, a man who strongly supports a war Sullivan hates and is frequently at odds with Sullivan's social views.
According to Sullivan the explanation is McCain's integrity, a trait he shares with Paul. "They have both said things to GOP audiences that they knew would offend," writes Sullivan. "They have stuck with their positions despite unpopularity. They're not saints, but they believe what they say." He lists McCain's status as a war hero and his willingness to consider issues through a fundamentally serious and apolitical lens.
This is a phenomenon I'm seeing a lot when speaking to Republican voters here in Iowa. McCain is the second choice of many, many people. A number of folks I've spoken to say that they wish they could caucus for the man. Thompson supporters, Huckabee supporters, and Romney supporters have all said to me that they respect and like John McCain, but that their man wins for some other reason (usually, he's right on the issues where McCain is wrong; McCain's advocacy for a moderate immigration plan is often cited as a huge problem).
There is a thirst, I think, for honesty in politicians. When I ask supporters of any candidate here, Democrat or Republican, what they look for in a candidate, 75 percent of the time the first thing they say is "honesty," or some variation thereof. That's a rough number, of course, but I assure you it is stunningly high. The fact that Clinton supporters, Obama supporters, and Romney supporters—supporters of anyone at all—say that honesty is their number one priority indicates that people can convince themselves that basically anyone is "honest." But somehow, deep down, they realize that John McCain is the real deal.
Sullivan and Iowa's Republicans aren't the only ones. I'm prey to this as well.

John McCain the real deal? He's not principled enough to be called that.

John McCain is a Big Government guy, if there is a problem undoubtedly he will find a way for "big" government to intervene. I dont buy his honesty, look at the way he "spins" the war, and he "spins" his amnesty position. He won't even come out and call it amnesty, if he were honest he would do that.
I can't buy McCain, and it looks like if he gets the nom the country will have to choose between a Neo-Con/Neo-Lib ticket in John McCain and Joe Lieberman or again a Neo-Con/Extreme Liberal ticket in Hillary Clinton and (prob) Bill Richardson.
What a choice we will have.

That is a fair assessment that I reluctantly share. I say reluctantly because it would be hypocritical to disparage his integrity when so many mock Congressman Paul for his.
Senator McCain however, largely represents the ideology that Dr. Paul is trying to abolish.
I admire Sen. McCain and wish him well in all things except his bid for the White House.
I am a veteran, have always voted since Reagan, and was undeclared to any Party but now Republican to vote for Dr. Paul in a 2/5 state.
I think Dr. Paul will do better than anticipated in both Iowa and New Hampshire.
...
You know what really did it for me?
The war. I think it is time to peacefully end our empire and rebuild and protect this nation.

He's consistent all right. Any time the establishment needed a swing vote to shaft the American worker he was their go to guy. Why admire a man who's great flash of integrity was to side with 12 million illegal aliens against his own party, the law of the land, and 80% of native born Americans?

Integrity? Please.
First off, let me say that I think McCain has much more integrity than guys like Romney and Guliani who will clearly say and do anything that they think will get them elected. Both have spent their entire campaigns making excuses for past transgressions that should kill any candidate.
But McCain? The same guy who turned 180-degrees the minute after George W Bush stopped trashing him in the previous election? That's putting your party ahead of country.
The same guy claiming that the "troops want to succeed" when every documented fact suggests otherwise?
That's not integrity. That's politics as usual.
The list of candidates with integrity starts and stops with Ron Paul. John Edwards and perhaps Barack Obama would qualify.
But every other candidate in the race tells you exactly what their focus groups tell them to say.
Ron Paul has no dirt, no skeletons in the closet. He didn't have to remake himself for a presidential run.
And that is the definition of integrity.
And as you noted in the article, "integrity" is overwhelmingly important in this election, especially after GWB.
That is why all you "pundits" and "mainstream media" are going to be shocked when you find out that the Ron Paul revolution is for real.
Please step out from the trees and see the forest.

McCain/Leiberman is the ticket for 2008. Northerner/Southerner, Liberal/Conservative, Easterner/Westerner. They are independent thinkers and can put aside party factions that are dividing America to conqueror it for material gain.

McCain, a war hero? Yes, if you consider someone who murdered civilians from the comfort of an air-conditioned cockpit a war hero. He's lucky the North Vietnamese didn't execute him for war crimes.

You are a petty person and a disgrace to America.

I agree--he's everybody's second choice, AND he still runs strongs in general election polls.
That's why I think he still has a good chance to gain the nomination, by being picked in a brokered convention--which seems a likelihood given the splintered Republican field.

John McCain is disgrace as a human being.
He commits adultury on his first wife while his present wife and he are having an affair.
What a terrible example pure weakness both he and his wife have
He deserted his first wife when she was in an horrific car accident during his time at being a pow, so he comes home to a women who is four in shorter because of the accident and has gotten fatter.
So in a crises will he desert America---he already has, what a creep guy!
