Ron Paul Loses His Luster

With results in from New Hampshire, the wild and pervasive fantasies surrounding the Paul campaign should finally be laid to rest. For months Paul supporters have swamped the comments section of this and pretty much every other major blog with the idea that his poll numbers were vastly underreported, either due to a media conspiracy, or the fact that his young, cell-phone-wielding supporters weren't counted in typical phone polls. I've pointed out that Dean supporters made pretty much the same, baseless case in 2004, and it's now clear that nothing has changed since then: In Iowa, Paul won 10 percent of the vote (phone polls had given him 9 percent) and in New Hampshire he won 7.6 percent (phone polls had given him 6 to 10 percent). In short, the Ron Paul myth should be about as dead as the decomposed remains of Guy Fawkes.

Of course, if New Hampshire voters hadn't written him off, Paul would have self-destructed anyway. As I pointed out back in mid-November, Paul has too many cozy ties with racists to ever survive the scrutiny heaped on front-runners. Yesterday The New Republic revealed those racist ties to be stronger than anyone realized. The Atlantic (where Andrew Sullivan had endorsed Paul) responded with an apologia arguing that fringe idealists are naturally predisposed to tolerate the repulsive views of those with whom they share shards of common ground. It's an interesting idea that doesn't excuse anything. At the very minimum, Paul was grossly negligent in allowing a newsletter chocked full of racist diatribes to be published for decades under his name.

What worries me the most about Paul's meltdown is not that it will discredit Paul, but that it will discredit some of the more noble elements of the movement that surrounds him. As I noted in my recent feature on Paul, the movement, and not the candidate, is the real revolution. Just look at the way Paul supporters have challenged the Republican orthodoxies on Iraq and the Patriot Act from within the Party.

Coy to the possibility of running on a third-party ticket, Paul told the Washington Post last week that he has "no intention" of mounting an independent bid, but also left the door open, adding: "We'll see if the supporters keep sending the money. But right now, our focus is on Feb. 5th." An independent Paul bid would certainly be interesting. Maybe it would suck away some anti-war votes from Democrats, or, in the event that Barack Obama ends up as the Democratic nominee, maybe it would suck away some bigot votes from the Republican. Either way, a Paul bid is looking like an increasingly dangerous idea for libertarians. He has carried them into the mainstream like nobody before, but now that they are almost there, is he really the best guy to represent them? At some point, it might be time for the Ron Paul Revolution to say "no" to Dr. No.

Ron Paul Revolution? Or revolutionary ideas? We as American citizens are responsible for the mess that America is in now. We have allowed our attention from duty to be distracted by Bling-Bling. Go Shopping our President tells us. Are we done shopping yet? It is time to wake up to the fact that we as citizens desparately desire peace, prosperity and change. We continue to bicker, disagree, discredit and disenfranchise each other instead of searching for common ground. The common ground of the richest 10% of this country is obvious. Where does that leave the other 90%?
Revolution? Shout out! Join together! Please find common ground and be our heros!

I don't get it. I have read everything that I could get my hands on about Ron Paul and listened to every video available on him. All that have found leave me proud to follow such a wonderful man. You have to be talking about someone else.

Ron Paul is no different in his platfform than any Libertarian Presidential Candidate ever except that he is pro-life. What sets him apart is that finally, the word is out on personal freedom and the Constitution. That is, he a advocate of the government that Jefferson envisioned.

Notice the age breakdown--Ron Paul got SECOND in New Hampshire among Republicans in the 18-24 age group. This bunch just needs to educate the people over 30 about who Ron Paul is.

I would not support Dr Paul because he is going to win. I would support him because he is the closest to being right (closest, not perfect).

I do not give a damn how many other people in this stupid, ignorant, wicked country would agree with me.

Agreed Steve. The message *is* at least as important as the man. We are changing the debate and we are running a campaign in a way that is never been done before. Even if we *do* lose, that alone is worth the fight, but I am not done with winning yet.

I'm rabidly intolerant of intolerance, and I don't blindly support *any* politician, but I don't see that the New Republic's hit piece demonstrated much of anything, any more than comments about Senator Obama's supposed connections to Islam, or all the fire Romney is taking for his beliefs. Can we stay focused on the issues please? I do, however, see an awful lot of concrete threat by many of his opponents (100 years in Iraq?!)

I am not stunned nor shocked to see and hear that so many Americans continue their beliefs in the current polital process of voting based on popularity, sex, race, religion or what have you.
WAKE UP AMERICA!! It is time NOW, to look at the chaos the US Government has handed to us! I don't need someone else telling me what my rights are, so much as them understanding what rights they have lost. Simple Freedom! Ron Paul WILL make an excellant choice for President, not only for what he too believes in but because HE HASN'T CRIED TO WIN VOTES, HE HASN'T CLAIMED HIS RACE IS WHY HE IS RUNNING, HE HASN'T PROMISED TO CUT TAXES WHILE RAISING SPENDING IN THE GOVERNMENT, HE HASN'T USED HIS RELIGION AS A SOURCE FOR VOTES AND MOSTLY, HE HAS NOT LIED ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE TO MAKE HIMSELF LOOK GOOD TO VOTERS!! Fellow Americans, you should be ashamed to think that the government has your best interests in mind. Tomorrow you will still have the same jobs, the same taxes(if not more) and the same lack of services from the government in your hour of need. Stop being fooled by the naysays of America. Stand up for your rights and speak out to the beaurocrats who want to control your every moment here on Earth!
SUPPORT RON PAUL!!!!!!!!

Very well said, RTMAN!

Rather than celebrate the fact that someone who represents REAL change in DC is Finally being heard, they're celebrating the fact that he apparently isn't going to suceed in instituting it. (at least not in the near term)

Wonderful 'Free Press' we have, isn't it?

I know that it may be hard for you to research information for yourself but there are tons and tons of documentation that show clearly how WE the people of America are bafoons, trapped within a corrupt system that enslaves us to pay for wars for other countries interest - over- and over - and over - you want the status quo? "It seems that the people and Congress are easily persuaded by the jingoism of the preemptive war promoters. It’s only after the cost in human life and dollars are tallied up that the people object to unwise militarism.

The strange thing is that the failure in Iraq is now apparent to a large majority of American people, yet they and Congress are acquiescing to the call for a needless and dangerous confrontation with Iran.

But then again, our failure to find Osama bin Laden and destroy his network did not dissuade us from taking on the Iraqis in a war totally unrelated to 9/11.

Concern for pricing oil only in dollars helps explain our willingness to drop everything and teach Saddam Hussein a lesson for his defiance in demanding Euros for oil.

And once again there’s this urgent call for sanctions and threats of force against Iran at the precise time Iran is opening a new oil exchange with all transactions in Euros.

Using force to compel people to accept money without real value can only work in the short run. It ultimately leads to economic dislocation, both domestic and international, and always ends with a price to be paid.

The economic law that honest exchange demands only things of real value as currency cannot be repealed. The chaos that one day will ensue from our 35-year experiment with worldwide fiat money will require a return to money of real value. We will know that day is approaching when oil-producing countries demand gold, or its equivalent, for their oil rather than dollars or Euros. The sooner the better." "Ron Paul is no different in his platfform than any Libertarian Presidential Candidate ever except that he is pro-life."

Ya, and that's a pretty big effin' difference if you're among the 50% of the population who was born with a uterus. Personal autonomy and all that shit, ya know?

Well Josh Harkinson, it seems that you're focusing on the person and not the message.

If you were looking to show that Ron Paul isn't perfect then I'd say that is a waste of time. No one is perfect. You found what you consider to be a flaw in his character or a blemish in his history. Fine. What of his message? Is limited government, fiscal conservatism and the protection of civil liberties unsatisfying? Is that not what we've been looking for in a candidate? Are those not the promises broken by politicians we've elected in the past?

I'd suggest that you switch your focus from the common mud-slinging to the actual issues.

For all that, it was an interesting article to read.

Every facet of the media is pulling out all stops to bash Ron Paul's candidacy. More than anything, this election has shown us that it is difficult to run an effective campaign without the blessings of the elite, even if you have the best plan for the country, as Ron Paul does.

"even if you have the best plan for the country, as Ron Paul does."

Media or no - Americans aren't buying the BS Paul is putting down.

He is a kook, always has been and I gave Paul too much credit thinking he would break double digits.

His racist newsletters were too much to swallow for any American with two brain cells.

Nothing wrong with the movement that can't be addressed by changing their figurehead - Ron Paul is not the right man for the movement, when the Paultards figure this out they will be able to move forward.

Get a true liberatarian or a real conservative without the racist newsletters and quirky off the charts insanity and the movement will survive.

To pretend that a politician (any politician) is the key to good governance is to shirk your responsibilities as a citizen. Nobody will save us from ourselves but us.
