Obama Hypocrisy on Homophobia

Barack Obama went before Dr. Martin Luther King's church yesterday and delivered a stirring speech that, amongst other things, decried homophobia in the black community.

For most of this country’s history, we in the African American community have been at the receiving end of man’s inhumanity to man. And all of us understand intimately the insidious role that race still sometimes plays – on the job, in the schools, in our health care system and in our criminal justice system.
And yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that none of our hands are entirely clean. If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll acknowledge that our own community has not always been true to King’s vision of a beloved community.
We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them. The scourge of anti-Semitism has, at times, revealed itself in our community. For too long, some of us have seen immigrants as competitors for jobs instead of companions in the fight for opportunity.

The speech, which you can watch here, is beautiful, but marred slightly by the fact that Obama has worked with an actively homophobic leader of the black community in the past. And he accepted the endorsement of another just a few days ago. The Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, who has supported Bush previously but will campaign for Sen. Obama, runs a ministry that is all about the ex-gay thing. From the website:

We are pleased to announce the creation of " The Way, The Truth and The Life", a program created to provide Christ Centered instruction for those seeking freedom from homosexuality, lesbianism, prostitution, sex addiction and other habitual sins.

No one is spotless here. Hillary Clinton identifies Billy Graham as a spiritual influence even though Graham is (or was) famously anti-Semitic. But nevertheless, this is disappointing.

Update: John Aravosis contacted the Obama campaign and it told him that Caldwell was a little over-excited when he said he would be campaigning for Obama. The campaign hasn't actually asked him to do anything.

Reaching there aren't you? Maybe all Democrats should give back all the endorsements they received in the form of votes from all the racist, ageist, sexist, homophobe and Republican voters in order to remain pure and avoid your label of hypocrite? I know it is hard to find something bad about Obama, but this is a bit ridiculous.

Let me start by saying I am a lesbian and I have experienced church-based and cultural discrimination.

One thing I have always enjoyed in Obama's speeches is how he calls people together in spite of their differences. I think this is another case of that. We want him to divide his supporters so that those who are "in" don't discriminate against us, but maybe he's more about modeling the inclusivity he wants to see than scaring people into toeing the line.

Jonathan, no offense but I think your youthful idealism is showing.

I don't support homophobia and I don't believe for an instant that Obama is a homophobe.

Further, I am far less inclined to damn any of the candidates as a result of some loose association and far more inclined to assess them based on their own actions and words. Seriously, can you name a single major candidate who hasn't had a relationship with someone who might be seen as controversial? If the bar for candidacy is to be raised that high, then no one will pass muster.

I worry more about all of the GOP candidates.

Must be a slow news day.

Not really a slow news day if you take into account the eminent stock market crash. Or at least that's what every other news site is reporting.

Finally, a post that isn't just bashing Hillary. Well done.

Billy Graham had the courage to speak the truth about the undue influence in the media by the Zionists, the persecutors of third world people. The man was ahead of his times. Say No to the occupation.

I think Obama's words, rather than his associations, speak loudest: "We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters." He obviously isn't deluded into thinking that 'gay' is a temporary mental aberration, curable and wrong.

What would MLK do? :)

In New Hampshire, I know that Ms.Clinton got votes from many independent voters who are homophobic and she accepted their votes. She did not tell the homophobes not to vote for her. She is worse than Ron Paul.

Randy,

Dude, did you even bother reading? It never said he was just a supporter but that he would be an active campaigner after having been in contact with the campaign. Regardless of what other posters say, anyone having a bigot campaign on your behalf is sick b/c one is exploiting intolerance for votes.

I know it is hard to find something bad about Obama

Are you kidding me?! Uh, how about him sending out Jesse Jackson, Jr. after NH? How about him bragging about an ethics bill that's toothless? How about having the same voting record on Iraq as Sen. Clinton? How about refusing to denounce that race baiting Spanish ad by UNITE-HERE, which was also hypocritical considering he based Edwards for the 527s?

It doesn't matter: apparently Obama called it off b/c that ministry site, which was fine this morning, is all of a sudden not working (what a coincidence).

Oh, except the fact that McClurkin is still campaigning for Obama.

Troy,

Get off the meds! Where's your proof? Good Lord. Did Obama not do the same or Edwards?

Thanks for the info; this is badly needed and should be widely circulated.

absolutely nobody is perfect, but...I have to wonder about someone running for President, who speaks of tolerace toward gay's/lesbian's, but his actions of 'employing' very well know homophobe's (twice, so far) to help his election campaign speaks much louder than his words...Obama carries a good message, but he is making serious mistakes by not distancing himself from these people...this goes strongly against a fundemental platform plank that Democrats stand for: Tolerance

Also, to the best of my knowledge, Billy Graham never campaigned for or endorsed Hillary (or Bill, for that matter), so this comparison Myth appears to be Busted!

Another thought to ponder when you get a chance...there is a pretty clear link proving that what somebody fears the most is what they will rabidly attack the most...question: why do the sociopaths (GOP) always attack Hillary (even more than Bill)? (hint: it's not because she is the weakest)

This story is reminiscent of some of the emails that are circulating.

Sorry. Accepting political support from somebody does not mean that you agree 100% with everything they believe. Neither does granting that support. I support Obama without having to agree with every one of his positions.

We are electing a leader, not a demi-god or magician. The policy wonks can deconstruct every politician's positions until their heads cave in, but the question that needs to be answered is "Who can lead this nation?" I think it's Obama. You have your own opinion, but basing it on what one of Obama's supporters does is not the best way to form it.
