Clarence Thomas, Stoicism Personified

cthomas.jpg According to the AP, "Two years and 144 cases have passed since Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas last spoke up at oral arguments."

Maybe he's trying to make a point. Maybe he's dead.

RIP, Clarence Thomas.

3. Let everyone learn in Silence with all Subjection. ...
32. Silence evolves from the dissolution of the mind; it is quite different from ordinary silence of speech. It is Eloquence... Eternal Speech."

Justice "Uncle Ruckus" doesn't engage in oral argument because he's already made up his mind. All he has to do is follow his checklist:

1. Is the plaintiff in the highest 5% of annual income?

2. See number 1

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt - Mark Twain, if I remember right.

Thomas falls into the political spectrum along the lines from Conservative to Reactionary much as most of those appointed by the misnamed Neo-Cons. As such, he invites those to come before him which can allow him to "turn the clock back" to times of Robber Barons and two class system, wealthy and poor, and women were chattel. Light would have to be reflected by a large number of mirrors to reach the "secretive Star Chamber" he envisions himself a part of.

Clarence, I think, is caught in a comtemplative paradox.

The facts all contribute only to setting the problem, not to its solution....... .......... ....

....... Scepticism is not irrefutable, but obviously nonsensical, when it tries to raise doubts where no questions can be asked. For doubt can exist only where a question exists, a question only where an answer exists, and an answer only where something can be said.... .... . . . . . .

.... . . . There are, indeed, things that cannot be put into words. They make
themselves manifest. They are what is mystical. ...... . .

. . . . . My propositions are elucidatory in this way: he who understands me finally recognizes them as senseless, when he has climbed out through them, on them, over them. (He must so to speak throw away the ladder, after he has climbed up on it.) He must transcend these propositions, and then he will see the world aright.

What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence.
