Eliot Spitzer: Screwed

Having sex with prostitutes is always a risky proposition for any public official. But when you've pissed off some of the richest and most powerful people in the world, paying for sex may be one of the more stupid things you could do. Jezus, Eliot, what the hell were you thinking?
In case you haven't heard yet, The New York Times reported this afternoon that New York's Governor Eliot Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month. In a press conference that lasted nanoseconds—there were no questions taken—Spitzer admitted that he had violated "his obligation to his family," but he said nothing else about the news report and gave no hints on whether he intends to remain (that is, try to remain) in office.
Spitzer is so loathed on Wall Street and in the business community that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has devoted entire conferences to figuring out how to bring him down. Tom Donohue, the president of the Chamber, once accused Spitzer of using the "most egregious and unacceptable form of intimidation that we have seen in this country in modern time" in his investigation of Wall Street firms back in 2005, when Spitzer was the state's attorney general.
Business leaders despise Spitzer for his holier-than-thou press conferences in which he denounced them as slimeballs. Among his enemies: former chief of the New York Stock Exchange, Dick Grasso; the entire mutual fund industry; dirty power-plant owners; trillion-dollar banks. Spitzer went after all of them, with an aggressive use of state and some federal law that was derisively known as "Spitzerism." His election as New York's governor showed that he had the ability to win over upstate Republicans, a sign that he might have a future in national politics. And imagine the business world's horror at the possibility of a Spitzer-led U.S. Department of Justice, or worse, the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Spitzer had to know that people were gunning for him. Put aside Wall Street, he'd made plenty of enemies prosecuting garden-variety criminals. As head of the state's organized crime task force, he prosecuted two major prostitution rings. He certainly must have realized that prostitution business often has deep ties to mobsters. So by associating with $5,500-an-hour "executive" call-girls who were in bed with wealthy individuals and possibly connected to organized crime, Spitzer put himself in a position where he could be blackmailed or ruined by the very types of people he had pursued.
Sex for hire might not be the end of every politician. Louisiana senator David Vitter, whose phone number turned up in the records of the famous D.C. Madam, is testament to that. Other politicians have survived sex scandals, too, most notably Rudy Giuliani and Idaho senator Larry Craig. But Spitzer made his career on being Mr. Clean. He used his moral authority to fix a lot of things that were wrong with corporate America. As a result, this hypocrisy will be his undoing. Dick Grasso and his friends must be popping the champagne.
Comments
So what? Who really cares about a person's sex life as long as the public figure in question is not a hypocrite. Spitzer is good for New York and should not resign.

Are you kidding me? Prosecuting prostitute rings while using one at the same time in not hypocritical? Only in American politics...

The critical difference with Spitzer and the other mentioned Vitter and Craig is that they are Republicans. I smell a possible connection with the DOJ, selective prosecutions (GA anyone?) and the current state of US Attorneys. We must assume the only ones left at Justice are the corrupt ones. Wow, to take down a Dem. Gov. of New York before November would be sweet indeed. I await tough investigative reporting from the boyz. (and "gals). NOT.

The straight and narrow path is often long, and difficult, I'd forgive Spitzer his indiscretion on condition that he put his contrition regarding the whole situation in writing, similarly sign an agreement to forswear further such activities, and finally, put it to the voters as to whether he should be allowed to keep his job. Then, if his family forgives him, and the voters let him stay in office, then he could potentially continue in office.

I don't like that he was caught by a wire-tap. That smacks of the very reasons that this subject should be discussed more in the media. These warrantless wire taps aren't to save us from 'sleeper cells'; they are to take down political enemies. How sad that rather than being outraged about the tap, people are fanning themselves and opening their hymnals and behaving in exactly the holier than thou manner for which Spitzer is evidently famous. I felt the same way about the Larry Craig thing, in that I don't want tax payer money spent to pay cops to nab 'pervert fags' for hooking up in the airport bathroom. Don't forget, folks, that this wasn't a cop that wandered in on two guys 69-ing - it was a sting operation. Where are your values? Or are you so convinced that this kind of thing can never reach into your own life that you just feel safe responding in the way your TV pundits and editorializing 'journalists' tell you? Frankly, I'm uncomfortable - but America makes me feel that way quite often. Go watch 'The Little Foxes', a Lillian Hellman play that nicely spotlights the fact that complacent citizens are just as much the problem as the people who connive actively for power.

It's about time the self-named "Steamroller" has shown his hypocrisy. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned for more. How ironic that Spitzer's favorite means of catching people, wiretap, was used on him. Next to fall hopefully will be his buddy, Andrew Cuomo. I'd like to know whan will these Stepford political wives decided to let their husbands go it alone before the cameras.

What if they simply got sick of his crap and rang the Pooh Bah Phone to there "Fix-it" man? The Cleaner. The Wolf. The Man with the Plan. What if they decided to pull him into a "back room" and squeeze his balls until he accepted an offer he couldn't refuse? Something like... "Ok... look here Mr Eagle Scout, either you get caught with "Kristin" or somebody in your family has an "unfortunate" accident." They can't assassinate everyone they hate after all ... can they?

Of the many elements to dislike in this whole affair, the part that hasn't been commented upon yet is the author's take. Ms. Mencimer leads the article not with any comment on the objective wrong Mr. Spitzer committed. In Ms. Mencimer's view, it was only poor judgment because Mr. Spitzer had made powerful enemies. Cheating on your wife is an immoral act even if not committed by a powerful politician or caught on tape.

What's even more interesting is that the wire tap was ordered after Spitzer's bank notified the feds that money was being moved in and out of accounts. I certainly don't condone this behavior, but it is certainly more concerning to me that under the Patriot Act, our own banks are also watching our every move. I understand if this money is being moved over seas, etc., but this is somewhat very disturbing.

I can see most of the people who responded to the Spitzer affair. haven't been following politics very long (I mean for years and years). It is not the act but the self righteous rabid attacks on others that have been caught doing the very thing he has prosecuted others for in the past. All the while trying to project an air of being above such awful and degrading actions. A person who wallows in the moral decaying society we seem to have been and still are creating for ourselves in this country, shouldn't be suprized when it come back around to bite him are her in the rear. After being so above it all and better than the common people he had crushed in the past. Mr, Spitzer should resign, end of story. I'm sure there will be many who think this is no big thing at all. project this same thing on different public figures with different political and business connections, and see how many different reactions you get. depends on how you lean. and how good your morally centered.

When anyones' activities become suspect, they automatically are investigated for all criminal activities. Seen from Europe, this affair has no public importance. It doesn't concern politics. People can be faithful or not, be single, maried or divorce while in office, and at the same time the same people can do a good job while in office. Mitterrand in his times had an affair with a journalist, had a daughter out of mariage, the press knew, so did the citizens, and there was no feeling of scandal. To me the whole story is "tittytainment" just good for people magazines.

Are you people kidding me? Having an affair is one thing...immoral, but not necessarily illegal. PROSTITUTION IS ILLEGAL. He committed a crime. When he paid for prostitution across state lines, it became a FEDERAL crime. Thus the legitimate use of a WARRANTED federal wiretap. This isn't the warrantless crap that Bush has been pandering. This is the real deal. As much as I was a fan of the man's work, his career is rightfully over.

I guess the Mayor thought he was like the President and vice-President and could get away with breaking the law.
If people don't wake up, stop following and believing in corporate media, we're all doomed. They want to give AT&T and Verizon retro-active immunity for spying on us? Fine, then we should boycott their services, and the services of any company that cooperates with this agenda. The odds of dying in a terrorist attack today, in the U.S., are 40,000 to one. Chances of dying of a heart attack? 350 to one. Yet, we spend more than the rest of the world combined on making bombs and biological agents and chemical weapons, yet we're the only country where there is not a form of universal medical care!! We're all concerned about the Mayor's indiscretions..well, who here hasn't made a bad choice, a stupid choice, a "sinful" choice before? What we should be concentrating on is our lack of privacy. Because everyone does make mistakes, and when one's every phone call, every web search, every e-mail is pored over by these secret agencies, then there is no longer any privacy for anyone--but only certain people are punished. Do you think anything at all would happen to Bush or Cheney if they were caught in a similar position?? Of course not. They would claim that they were immune from that, as well--Executive Priveledge, you know..when it's convenient. When it's not convenient, then Cheney isn't even part of the Executive Branch!!! But, despite the fact that these two (Cheney and Bush) lied to us, bombed a defenseless country to smithereens (what was the purpose of that? Just what it was called: to shock and awe. Who? Surely all that wasn't for Hussein? Who was mostly killed? Civilians.), gave orders to have people--many of them completely innocent, as we've now discovered--tortured, used illegal chemical weapons like white phosphorus on the people of Faluja, perhaps attempted to politicize the Justice Dept. by the firing of 9 U.S. attorneys in the middle of an administrative term, did everything in their power to prevent any investigation into 9/11, destroyed the crime scene of 9/11 by shipping the steel all the way to China to be melted down(???)threatened war against Iran, and would have bombed them if the NIE hadn't come out proving that they were not a threat, and refused to answer any questions under oath...all that, yet nothing has happened to them. They failed to protect us from the attacks of 9/11, yet act like we would be safer with them in charge! Why? Because we bombed a country that had nothing to do with 9/11--in fact, the newest Pentagon report found absolutely no ties between al-qaeda and Iraq or Saddam Hussein--despite Donald Rumsfeld saying there was "bullet-proof" evidence connecting the two. Has there been any accountability from anyone at the White House? No.

Among those cheering Spitzer's fall are their Wall Street cronies above, who picked up some of the crumbs, while the lambs were fleeced and slaughtered. Whence will come the next protector of the lambs and the taxpayers, who by the way should note that the federal reserve today announced plans to use $200 billion of your money to bail out the banks, the market, investors, etc by letting them use subprime paper as collateral for obtaining your money. How much to bail out those who lost their homes and/or jobs in the fallout from their greedy (and sometimes fraudulent) practices? Zero? Oh Spitzer, Oh Spitzer how could you forsake us in our time of need. And for such a fleeting pleasure.

Stupid, it is not just about sex. There are numerous felonies involved in dealing with money and money laundering. Gov Spitzer was State Attorney General, he put other people in jail, he knew the laws, and espically laws involving money laundering. He broke the law when he shifted money around to pay what he knew was a dummy money front company. Many other questions will need to be answered, a big one, where did he quietly get well over $80000 for his over 8 years of fooling around? Did he get monies from ladies of the night? Where? More felonies are looming for Spitzer, that is why there is talk of Spitzer trying to cut a deal to stay out of jail or minimize his jail time. You do not spend time in jail for being a John with a Prostitute. Spitzer is a crook and should be looked at as a crook, not as an innocent, picked upon, poor politician, who is being forced to resign just because he is a Democrat. His defenders will soon see how stupid they are now in defending him.
It is not about sex, stupid

Spitzer's crime has nothing to do with the Mann Act- nor is it hypocrisy or derelict morals; he has feted the cynics who wait-out every champion to self-destruct in human flaw.

Spitzer was probably being spied on by Vatican shills and the Bishop's mobsters seemingly in the way all our elected officials who haven't been following papal bull must be being spied on.
He was about to get a bill passed that would allow women the most basic of individual rights, the right to decide, the right to choose to give birth or to have an abortion.

Anna, your statement is anti-Christian. You are obviously one of those Christ hating bigoted Jews.

Steve Chapman just published an interesting column about Spitzer and prostitution in general. It is pretty funny. The link is Here.

He could have saved himself about $4,850.00 dollars, if he would have researched a little. As a fellow libertine, my quest around the world have been many. K-5, Prague, Yab Yum, Amsterdam, Lafolie 63, Berlin, and etc. I understand inflation, but no one either male or female is worth that much and hour, unless your on the Forbes 400 list, and well, we all know, it's allot more. The Funny thing is we honor those who have been in the highest offices in the land, with libraries, and buildings, and highways, for there flings, and we buy there books, and campaign for them and make donations and etc. We seem to hold them in the highest esteem, and yet the very people who go after you and others are doing the same thing themselves. What's the word for it? Stay the course, no? So go on with your conspiracy theories, and think tanks, and the general media, and Christians, throw the first stone!

I'm a lover of the U.S. Constitution, too bad it has been almost destroyed by right-wing "Christians". in a way similar to the way the German Constitution was destroyed.
I don't believe it is necessary to to "believe in" the monotheistic god. In fact it seems to be very dangerous for the world to have three religions in which the people slavishly follow the same god, a god who is obviously a victim of multiple personality disorder. The closer so-called Christians, Muslims, or Jews get to the blind acceptance of "fundamentalist" nonsense the more innocent people die and the more impossible it becomes to make our country a true democracy.

Anna dear, as Carter said in his book "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid" , pg 209, "...(I)n the United States, Israeli government decisions are rarely questioned, voices from Jerusalem dominate in our media..." In other words, Zionist dominate the US media. "At the same time, political leaders and news media in Europe are highly critical of Israeli policies, affecting public attitudes." "Citizens in 15 European nations, indicate that Israel was considered to be the top threat to world peace."
Posted by: Steve on 03/13/08 at 12:16 PM Respond
Steve dear, I have watched all this nonsense for years. There are a number of Jews in Israel who oppose the Zionists on the ground and good for them! When the Christian Zionists help all the people who are Jewish move to Israel (the so-called "holy land") the vicious Christians can carry out "gods will". Look it up, its called "Armageddon".
One fourth to one third of Palestinians are Christian so the Zionists are killing Christians and Muslims.
So, isn't this what I said? I don't approve of any of this idiocy Fundamentalist Christians, Jews, and Muslims are deluded and dangerous.
Posted by: Anna Koester on 03/13/08 at 2:01 PM Respond
Anna, you are right. It is the Likud Party that is in bed with the Christian Zionists(e.g. John Hagee and Pat Robertson and others). The Christian Zionists are the greatest threat in America.

Anna and Steve, here's a simple solution to your argument. Anna you jump on the next plane to Israel, and stand in front of a bull-dozer, that's knocking down a Palestinian home, just because your not one of those Fundamentalist Jews, and Steve if your ever in San Antonio, Texas, drop by John Hagee's mega church and stand up and share your thoughts about why buying your way into heaven just won't work. Case in point, is has nothing to do with Elliot Spitzer! In the mean time, you both need to get laid, really, really bad! May I suggest a really good service, with reasonable rates!
Posted by: Tommy Knocker on 03/13/08 at 4:15 PM Respond
People are sexual creatures. Their sex lives shouldn't be part of the public domain, and just because it's in federal jurisdiction doesn't change the morals any. The only real need to combat prostitution rings is the corruption involved, but if we were more enlightened and forgiving about sex, there wouldn't be this tie either.
Posted by: Desider on 03/13/08 at 11:58 PM Respond
The problem is exactly what this article says: Spitzer's image was that of being the Elliot Ness of modern day New York. There is no way the Elliot Ness of old could have brought down Capone if he were an alcoholic during prohibition, or didn't pay his taxes, and the inclinations of his were publicly known. Nor could he have held public office after doing so and it was later revealed. Given the "victimless" nature of Spitzer's crime and the good he has done regarding cleaning up corruption in the business community (not to mention being a defender of women's rights) one could argue it just isn't fair that image means so much more than the reality of his contributions and vision. But the same could be said for Katrina hitting New Orleans; it isn't fair, but it is the nature of the beast, and only a man with some serious self-destructive issues could purposely fail to take this into consideration. I'll miss him. I guess.

This talk is mostly about hypocrisy, breaking the law, etc, etc. But this really IS about sex. And about the government getting involved in an individual's sex life. Spitzer was not motivated by money or power. He was motivated by sex. And for that reason, this whole thing should be none of my business, none of your business, and certainly none of the government's business.
There are few things more private, more intrinsically personal that one's sexual desires, fantasies, and preferences. With the exception of pedophilia and incest, I think we would all be better off with a "don't ask-don't tell" policy here. It wouldn't be as much fun for us, the media, or late-night comedians, but we can survive without these recurring frenzies resulting from the "indiscretions" of some public figure or other.
We should expect hypocrisy on the subject of sex, from our politicians and everyone else. It's the nature of the beast. There's nothing about a person's character that indicates his sexual preferences, and there's nothing about his sexual preferences that indicates his character. There's a long and growing bipartisan list of episodes that have brought us much ado about nothing: Vitter, Craig, Haggard, Clinton, Gingrich, Gary Hart, etc, etc. When these scandals appear, we should all avert our eyes.

To JIMBO:
What are you talking about? The Patriot Act and "I guess they thought all Democrats were Patriots"???
The "Patriot" Act is one of the most un-Patriotic Acts or Laws to ever be passed. It was passed without most people getting a chance to read it, but because it was called "The Patriot Act" it made anyone who voted against it seem un-Patriotic. Well, torturing people, spying on American citizens, destroying the Bill of Rights (at least on the Federal level), especially the 4th amendment--these are un-Patriotic Acts~! As Ben Franklin said, those who would give up essential Liberties for temporary (or illusionary) safety, do not deserve either! As the recent Pentagon Report, which just came out this March 2008 proves, beyond a doubt, there were NO ties between Saddam and Al-Qaeda..But they didn't release this report--no, you have to specifically ask for a copy to get one. But you can bet that if it had said there were ties, it would not only have been handed out to every reporter, but they would have distributed them like frickin' Pizza Fliers!!!
Also, anyone who believes that planes flew around our skies for over 2 hours, running into buildings, on 9/11, without any military response, is an idiot if they don't realize there had to be someone on the inside--our inside--sabotaging our military response. Every other time a single plane has gone off course, there's been an F-16 up there with them within 15 minutes...but on this one day, we're to believe everything failed all at once??? Wake-UP!
