Surrogate Problems Continued: How to Make a Bad Situation Worse
Mrs. Ferraro, I respect the role you played in American history, but you are most definitely on the list of people from both campaigns that just need to stop talking.
After saying that Obama is only a hair's breadth from the Democratic nomination because he's black, Ferraro had this to say about her critics:
"Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up," Ferraro said. "Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"
Then she kept it going on Fox News:
Enough, enough! Go raise as much money as you possibly can for Hillary Clinton. Go campaign in some corner of Pennsylvania. But stop turning what should be a national debate over two strong candidates both looking to make history into an unhinged essentialist pissing match over whether racism or sexism is worse!
Comments
Affirmative action is institutionalized racism and racial profiling at its worse. Ms. Ferraro is right. The revolt has started.

Putting Prof. in front of your name does not lend credibility to your statement.

Ms. Ferraro is revolting.

Sure and no white woman has ever benefited from Affirmative Action or Civil Rights.
FYI to Mrs. Ferraro, Senator Obama doesn't need your help raising money. $55 million last month alone. Get over yourself.

It's not because you're white, Ms. Ferraro; it's because you said something stupid and you refuse to see its stupidity.

the clinton campaign seems to be turning into a time machine. all these people we haven't heard from in years (ferraro, erica jong, etc.) have been cut out of their amber and unleashed to re-fight old battles from a bygone era. you know you've lost when your argument is "i was a token, so i know tokenism".
and geraldine, when you pop up every 20 years to repeat the same attacks against a black candidate, people do start to wonder if it really is about race with you. it's not them, it IS you.

Ferraro is a moron, and while I know this site is WePrayToObamadotcom, let's be honest. Do you really think a not-well-known senator with no real record who orates like a cartoon character would be winning these primaries if race wasn't involved? You really think that? Yes HRC is running a pretty bad campaign, but let's be pragmatic at least. Now obviously, if you don't like HRC, it's appropriate to say "Racist! Racist!" God forbid a woman (or anyone) speak her political opinion, huh. Sure that's not sexist. I think a black or woman president would be great, but I don't think you need to channel Little Britain's Rev. Jesse King to win hearts and minds; especially at a time when all people want is a tiny modicum of common sense. Race is as much an issue as sex is. Period. Bottom line is you've all been effectively divided by the cons. Congratulations, you lose.

This is a Clinton campaign strategy, not an accidental gaffe. If it were, Ferraro would now be muzzled. The Clintons' plan now is to race bait their way to an even bigger win in Pennsylvania than they would already have gotten. They believe Rendell that Pennsylvania is a racist state, and they've abandoned the black vote altogether (not that there was much in Pennsylvania anyway). What I don't understand is how ANY Democrat who believes the principles of the party could be supporting Clinton at this point. She is beneath contempt and morally unfit to lead this country.

This is all stupid. The focus of the Democrats is so wrong, childish and stupid. Time and delegates are running out.
There should be one and only one criteria for their primary vote; who has the best chance of winning the general election. Period. End of statement.
If the rank and file voters can't settle it, then the superdelegates should. I doubt they have the b**ls.

Being a discriminated minority (aka a woman) does not give one license to be discriminatory to another minority.
The "I'm a woman" defense is bullsh*t. Woman have equal oppportunity to be @ssholes. And GF has demonstrated that.
why hasn't HRC told her to "shut the h#ll up"?
Because she doesn't want her to.

Is Obama's campaign served by the crude language of his supporters?

According to Ferraro, Obama is a candidate only because he's black, she herself was a candidate in 1984 only because she is (was) a woman, and, by extension then, Clinton is a candidate only because SHE's a woman. So according to this argument that leaves McCain as the only viable candidate for president? Truly, this is all stupid. But Fox is paying her so what do we expect? Money talks, and then Geraldine does.
