Spitzer Resigns
Eliot Spitzer has resigned effective next Monday. There's not much to add, but let's take a step back and reflect on the double standard at work here. Spitzer cheated on his wife and broke the law, but he hasn't been charged with a crime. He is now out of office and endured intense pressure to resign in the two days it took him to make up his mind.
Larry Craig, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to a crime (disorderly conduct) and cheated on his wife. He is still in office. David Vitter, whose number appeared in the DC Madam's phone logs, likely cheated on his wife and likely broke the law, but was never charged with a crime. He, too, is still in office.
So what's the double standard? Governors vs. Senators? Jews vs. Gentiles? Democrats vs. Republicans? Or people with self-respect vs. people without?

Don't forget N.J. Governor McGreevey. The difference is between people willing to resign and people not willing to resign. I happen to believe a leader's personal life and transgressions are none of my business, but it's still comforting to see officials take responsibility for their actions, notably when those actions contradict their professional crusades. In that sense McGreevey and Spitzer possess a sense of honor Craig and Vitter do not. All four pay a price for their acts - but at least Spitzer and McGreevey may someday be taken seriously.
Spitzer had a reputation to loose. Such a pity. it takes sooo long to get a good reputation and only one stupid act to loose it.
I quess peolple in power have the idea "They are untoucheble.
Today you better be careful . Everything is recorded. What a lesson to learn

Sure it's a double standard.
Elliot is at the very least guilty of being stupid but his crimes pale in comparison to Congressman, Senators and pretty much the WHOLE FREAKIN' WHITE HOUSE! The House and the Seante have been complicit in their duty to defend the Constitution. Bush and Cheney are two of the most heinous men in power today.
Are they going to held accountable? Doubt it..
But Spitzer gets kicked to the curb for sex.. Go figure..

It shouldn't be lost in the din that Spitzer was going after banks, bankers and wall street.
It was a bank that did him in.
Hmmmmmmmm
Add the next day the fed pumped $200 billion directly to the banks. Why is nobody screaming "bailout" of the sub-prime and predatory lenders?
Hmmmmm times 2?
(I know - tin foil hat stuff)

And out of the ashes of Spitzer, NY gets a real progressive to be Governor now: David Paterson.

One key difference between Larry Craig and Spitzer is that there's no paper trail to a bathroom hookup. According to the NY Times, Spitzer's money trail with Emperor's Club VIP goes way back, and Spitzer knew very soon that they had tons of evidence on him that he couldn't talk his way out of.
Similarly with Vitter, if all they have is his name in a call girl's call logs, it's just not the same quality of evidence.
The NYT story also says that the first suspicious activity report from a bank languored for months with no action, and was only reconsidered once an unrelated report from a different bank was filed about concerns with the QAT shell companies.
From what I read, I don't think that Spitzer was targeted, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were more zealous in following up once they knew he was involved.
I don't have a problem with that, though. I think most people agree that public servants are held to a higher standard. Plus, the opposite situation would be much worse: "Ah, it's the governor, let's just bury this!" I think the feds had to follow this story, and once they had an open case with crimes committed and a major figure, they had to follow it to its conclusion.
I just think it's a tragedy because Spitzer stood for some good things.

Prostitution should be legalized. The radical feminists are out of date, they are the right wing crazies now. Look, our hero Spitzer appreciates the value of prostitutes and how it is good for them.

Jonny, there is no double standard. Spitzer, as AG, made calls from his office to arrange the services of the call girls, at the same time he was putting them in prison. Christ said, "as you judge, you will be judged." Spitzer in his resignation acknowledged this. End of story.

March 13, 2008 -- A decade ago, as she watched then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton humiliated by her intern-loving hubby, Silda Wall Spitzer made clear her intentions if Eliot ever cheated.
"That would never be me. I'd be gone," Silda told friends, a pal told The Post.
But Silda, for the second time in a week, donned a tailored designer skirt suit and appeared to be standing by her hooker-loving hubby yesterday, even as the fairy tale has soured behind closed doors.
Describing their relationship as "icy," a source said they now sleep in separate bedrooms.
Silda Spitzer, alone and clutching a handkerchief, left the palatial high-rise yesterday at around 3 p.m.
The news of her spouse's philandering with a coterie of high-priced girls in multistate trysts has not been easy to handle for the Southern Baptist, said another friend. "She's taking this very hard," said the source.

Government in the United States has fallen from grace considerably, let's see, we've had a Clinton that's a whore and Spitzer that's a prostitute, plus all the assorted RIGHT Wing Republican crimes and corruption. It is time for the United States to rise above the criminal and animal kingdom in government and the WHITE HOUSE and restore HOPE to the people of the greater majority common population. With the greedy and corrupt Bush administration, hope has been lost.
When race is a deciding factor, God is not leading. Hope IS Jesus. When one checks out all the references for HOPE in the bible, hope ends up to be Jesus. Therefore; hopefully, Obama's places his HOPE for our nation in his wisdom and knowledge relying on God through Jesus. What more can one ask of a leader? When our leaders truly have their hope firmly placed on Jesus and His WORD, they can truly give the nation HOPE, as apparently Obama has done.

Also, to the SUPER DELEGATES, please do not put the indiscretions of Bill Clinton back in the WHITE HOUSE. Eight years was too much. NAFTA wasn't for the people that put Clinton in the WHITE HOUSE, but was for the super rich the Clintons pant after. Hillary Clinton has requested the SUPER DELEGATES decide the election instead of the people who have already voted, which in and of itself is against the people already. Let's not get a Clinton back in the WHITE HOUSE, let's not do the same thing all over, because the Republicans haven't any problems with impeaching a Democrat, like the Democrats have with impeaching a Republican. Republicans just do it.
