dude - this is stupid. if Mother Jones wants to try and distinguish itself with journalistic integrity and a supposedly non-partisan bias, this is just plain stupid. I am as disappointed with the republicans as any thinking human, but don't make lame posts like this it just adds salt to the divide.

Wait? I think it's a fair question. Why the change? I've been a Republican for 20 years and am more than a little curious as to why the stars changed. Even if it doesn't specifically indicate a "satanic" reference, the fact that it is commonly thought of that way makes me wonder why they would change it.

There was a time, back in the 60's and 70's when there were very few guys unconventional enough to pierce their ears.

Some of us did anyway, and which ear you chose to pierce bore no symbolism to anyone, or any group.

Then, sometime in the '80s when it started to become commoneplace, someone decided there was a 'secret code' involved, and a right ear piercing indicated a gay orientation.

Consequently, many straight guys who had pierced the right ear when it bore no significance stopped wearing a ring in that ear to avoid being wrongly identified under a "well established" code.

Could it be that the star orientation held no widely recognized significance when the logo first started being used? And then a bunch of after-the-fact-know-it-alls decided it signified something that was never meant?
