Richardson Decides

Bill Richardson is endorsing Barack Obama. His motivation may have been this charming little anecdote, it may have been a true affection for Obama (Richardson was reportedly very impressed by BHO's speech on race), or it may have just been an acknowledgment that the electoral math is so heavily in Obama's favor that it is time for the Democrats to move on to the general. Supporting that final theory is something Richardson wrote in an email to supporters. It is time, he said, "for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the fall."

As the nation's only Hispanic governor, Richardson could have been a big help to Obama in Southwestern states. Problem is, there are none left on the primary calender. The closest thing is Oregon, which is where Richardson endorsed Obama today.

In fact, John Murtha's endorsement of Hillary Clinton from earlier this week probably means more. Murtha is a long-time Pennsylvania congressman with a specialization in national security, one of the campaign's current hot-button issues. If voters in the upcoming Keystone Primary are going to be swayed by anyone, it's Murtha.

That said, it's possible that both endorsements are irrelevant. I've argued as much in the past.

Mr. Stein I suspect you meant "impressed" rather than "impressive".

At any rate Bill Richardson has always expressed strong reservation for negative turns in tone the Democratic nomination race right from when he was still on the trail. He did so on quite a few debate occasions.

He did also indicate shortly before March 4 that it might be time to call this nomination race and move on to challenging the Republicans. Again, his tone then did indicate growing impatience with the negativity within the party.

It is quite possible that the Wright incident may have been a last straw for him. I think it is a bit of a stretch if not somewhat condescending to suggest that Richardson would make an endorsement based solely on the appeal of one speech.

Will the endorsement matter? Let's wait and see. Will Murtha's in PA matter? There's no way of telling. The growing trend of Republicans intervening in the race to skew it one way or another may in fact have a greater significance in PA than the Murtha endorsement. We just have to wait and see.

I can't help thinking it would be great to have an Obama/Richardson ticket. I respect Richardson a good deal and he certainly has the "experience" Obama and Clinton have been haggling over. But as bbarney said, it's all "wait and see"...

I'm really stuck here--everything is gyrating rapidly round and round and rooound...--going absolutely nowhere!!!

Someone help me!!!--I simply can't figure out why mortgage lenders would drastically raise interest rates--and by doing so put themselves out of business...

Is this somehow related to the fact that the last two Presidential Elections were subject to sooooo... much criminal activity (see the US Commission on Civil Rights report on the 2001 Presidential Election, and the Rolling Stone article Was the 2004 Election Stolen?), and then sooooo... we switch to easily defeated electronic voting machines...

Actually..., yessss..., it's all beginning to make Cosmic Sense...

The Politicians are all a bunch of criminals 'cos they know they can get away with it!!!!!!!

Here in NM we LOVE Richardson - and will hate losing him as Gov.

Not perfect, he has his downside but overall he is a good man - halfway good politician and good or bad I like him.

No more love for Richardson....he IS an ungrateful traitor...and an opportunist. VP anyone?

Although an endorsement temporarily influences things, super delegates can change their minds. In addition, they in no way have to respect the decision of the voters of the state they are linked to. Kennedy and Kerry are two excellent examples of super delegates who refuse to respect the results of the primary in their state. Hillary Clinton has mentioned this several times accepting it as part of the rules of the game as they have been set up for 2008. The important thing that I see here is that BECAUSE THE RACE IS THIS CLOSE, there are mega numbers of people turning out to vote. It may be a corny thing to say but it's a great time for the democratic process.

At what point did Richardson decide that he no longer shared the same political views as his long-time friends and colleagues, Bill and Hillary. Perhaps it was at the same time Senator Clinton lost her lead over Barack Obama. It is unfortunate that the governor believed he had nothing more to gain through his ties with the Clintons, for the manner in which he so publicly dismissed them has also caused a schism in their friendship. If this is a true demonstration of the governor's character, I hope the Clintons are glad to be rid of him.

Furthermore, simply because a disloyal, opportunistic weasel happens to be Hispanic doesn't mean his endorsement will sway the Hispanic vote. Even though he now has the "in" with the big man on campus, let's hope the high school tactics used by the governor will not play out for the rest of the delegates.

"Well, I'm not going to get in the gutter like that," Richardson said. "And you know, that's typical of many of the people around Sen. Clinton. They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

NEW MEXICO GOV. BILL RICHARDSON: I don't believe President Clinton was implying that. But the point here, Chris, is that the campaign has gotten too negative — too many personal attacks, too much negativity that is not resounding with the public.

And John McCain is running around getting support, being international. And this has to stop. I believe the sooner we end this race — and I'm not suggesting anybody get out, but maybe after the remaining primaries, the 10 primaries that are going to be very important in the days ahead, the Democrats come together and look at who's ahead when it comes to delegates, when it comes to the popular vote, the number of states.

And I just feel the time has come to come together behind a candidate. And this is why I endorse Senator Obama, because I believe he can bring the country together, that he is somebody that can reach across party and ethnic lines...

Bill Richardson is a joke. This is one more reason not to vote for Mr. Barack Obama

Mr. Richardson is the 62nd superdelegate to endorse Mr. Obama since Feb. 5, compared with fewer than five who have moved into Mrs. Clinton’s column since then.

The move by Mr. Richardson could give license to other superdelegates who had been holding back, at the request of the Clintons. His endorsement could prove particularly potent with this group because of the way he chastised Mrs. Clinton for the tone of the campaign, and his call for the party to unify around one candidate.

Hillary True Believers leave reality behind, in search of greener pastures

By - March 23, 2008, 2:09AM
Faced with the cruelties of mathematical probability, more and more True Believers in the Hillary camp have chosen instead to live in an escapist fantasy land where Obama is a racist, Hillary secretly has all the superdelegates in her pocket (the ones who endorsed Obama or are uncommitted are just for dramatic effect) and everyone in Pennsylvania is going to vote for her.

Yup, she's going to win 90% of the vote! You just wait! Also, those 2 million donors? All members of al-Qaeda!

Ferraro is a courageous hero! It's the black voters, and those damn "guilty" white voters who are voting for a bigot!

I also have evidence that red is blue, up is down, and being behind by 180 actually means you're ahead.

capt - Hussein: You made me chuckle - a nice end to the day.

Perhaps among some younger Latinos, Richardson's choice is a good one. But for those of us who cut our political teeth in the Chicano Movement during the 60's and 70's, Si Se Puede has a special significance and should not be bandied around just because it's there, which is what the Obama camp has done.
Richardson was wrong to endorse Obama, a candidate who became senator because the frontrunner dropped out in disgrace and because his Republican opponent was not even from Illinois. Si Se Puede? Por Favor. Obama practically had the candidacy handed to him. Richardson earned much of his greatreputation under the Clinton dministration. But he forgot who his friends are (were), and we Latinos who value honor and loyalty above all will not forget.

Abuelita,
You are so right! Richardson does not even know the word LOYALTY exists!
Regarding voting for Obama, I hope that people remember that words, no matter how terrific they may sound, cannot replace experience in dealing with the politics of Washington D.C.
