The Dating Balance of Southern Maine; The Huge Imbalance of Southern California
Working in the D.C. bureau of Mother Jones, instead of the San Francisco home office, has some interesting benefits...

From Richard Florida, who accompanies the map with interesting commentary. (He's got lots of other neat stuff, too.) Spotted on The Plank.

L.A. County has over 10million people, so an extra 90 thousand extra men doesn't even show up on the radar. Have to put things in perspective. Looks like the men left the southern women to go to California. The southern women are too fat to make it in California. They just can't compete with the California thin women.

Conversely, it could mean that women are leaving Southern California to find a man who isn't so focused on the superficial.

This map has some flaws. First of all, as pointed out in the comments on Richard Florida's page, it's not clear whether or not being "single" includes people who identify as GLB, who may or may not be in a committed relationship but are legally recognized as "single" either way. Also, not all committed male-female couples get married anymore. I also sense a bias regarding single = looking. If he did not control for these things - which has been asking on Florida's page but not answered - then his data in no way supports his conclusions. (Sidenote: I'm not a fan of the use of "dating balance/imbalance" in the MJ headline; it's pretty heterosexist.)
The other thing is I'm not sure he did a great job placing all of those dots. Ten thousand people do not live at the dot that he put in Northern Nevada (much less 10,000 more men than women) unless he was taking data from Burning Man. If that dot is supposed to represent Reno then it is a good 50-100 miles north of where it's supposed to be. I can't speak for the rest but that was pretty noticeable to me. Since this is his major way of communicating the data, you would think he would have taken a little more care with it.

L.A. county has 90,000 more single men. These are the Mexicans that come here to work hard and do the jobs that you Yankees are too lazy to do. We send home 15billion dollars a year to our families in northern Mexico. Or may be it is the prison population here of the Black gangsters.

I think the trend toward singlehood will be on the rise in the future, globally.
6.6 billion people, lots of people hungry or close to it...

This shows the increase in homosexuality, especially in the Bay area and West Hollywood.

Without more thorough demographic and attitudinal information, I don't think we can draw any serious conclusions about what this data means.
