Hillary's Prayer, Revisited
Hillary Clinton's campaign is doing its part to keep the Obama-Rev. Wright controversy alive. A few days ago one of Clinton's top advisers acknowledged that the campaign is aggressively pushing the Obama-Wright connection in its pursuit of uncommitted super-delegates. Hillary herself has repeatedly said that Wright "would not have been my pastor." And while there's no doubt the Wright issue will continue to be a headache for Obama, our prediction that Hillary's own untoward religious connections would become an issue has come true.
Last night NBC interviewed MoJo author Jeff Sharlet on Hillary's longtime participation in a secretive Capitol Hill group called the Fellowship.
Regular Mother Jones readers will be familiar with Hillary's involvement in the group from Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet's feature on the topic last September:
These days, Clinton has graduated from the political wives' group into what may be Coe's most elite cell, the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast. Though weighted Republican, the breakfast—regularly attended by about 40 members—is a bipartisan opportunity for politicians to burnish their reputations, giving Clinton the chance to profess her faith with men such as Brownback as well as the twin terrors of Oklahoma, James Inhofe and Tom Coburn, and, until recently, former Senator George Allen (R-Va.). Democrats in the group include Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor, who told us that the separation of church and state has gone too far; Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) is also a regular.
Unlikely partnerships have become a Clinton trademark. Some are symbolic, such as her support for a ban on flag burning with Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) and funding for research on the dangers of video games with Brownback and Santorum. But Clinton has also joined the gop on legislation that redefines social justice issues in terms of conservative morality, such as an anti-human-trafficking law that withheld funding from groups working on the sex trade if they didn't condemn prostitution in the proper terms. With Santorum, Clinton co-sponsored the Workplace Religious Freedom Act; she didn't back off even after Republican senators such as Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter pulled their names from the bill citing concerns that the measure would protect those refusing to perform key aspects of their jobs—say, pharmacists who won't fill birth control prescriptions, or police officers who won't guard abortion clinics.
A few weeks ago over at The Nation, Barbara Ehrenreich called on Clinton to "explain—or, better yet, renounce—her long-standing connection with the fascist-leaning Family." Today a Daily Kos diarist concurred that Hillary "owes us all an explanation." But the Clinton camp is keeping mum (Hillary declined to comment for the MoJo feature last year). Maybe she'll reconsider now?
Keep your eye out for continuing coverage of the Hillary-Fellowship connection and an excerpt of Sharlet's new book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, to be featured soon on MotherJones.com.

Sometimes I think it's a shame that Obama has promised such a high-toned campaign that it has hand-cuffed he and his staff to the point they can't point up legitimate differences and anomaly to the public, such as this Senate prayer breakfast cabal. It appears she is holding on to her earlier days when she was a Goldwater Republican.

Read the following diagnostic criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder and tell me they don't describe Hillary Clinton perfectly. We've had 7 years of severe psychopathology in the White House and don't need another difficult, unstable personality.
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
4. requires excessive admiration
5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
7. lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
8. is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Why the hate against Christians and prayer? This is bigotry. Will you next be a Jews hater, or maybe a Catholic hater?

Past Tore,
The association of Clinton II with this group is not really about religion. Like all religions, they are only stand-ins for politics. Clinton II legislatively works with the people in this group, including far right- wingers. It is her pledge to the rightwing ideas she holds, her 'legitimate' meeting place with the right to fashion these issues. That is why it is objectionable, not because she believes in some kind of relgion. But of course, being a "Pastor", you'd miss that. Because, after all, 5 centuries ago or more, the Christian church joined with Ceasar, not against him.
If she was part of some secret Wall Street bankers club, we'd see it as the same kind of thing. And maybe that will be found out next.

Elydog, put your toke down when you speak to me. Your attempt at communications comes from being too many years with Mary Jane.

Pastor Leroy: "from being too many years with Mary Jane."
Not much of a response there, and quite honestly his "attempt" at communications is better than yours anyway. He doesn't agree with you so he must just smoke too much pot huh?
Why don't you explain where you see the hate in this article or what exactly your problem with elydog actually is....

It seems that Obama really doesn't have to do much, Hillary has done it for him.
I do think that in the last 8 eight years something has changed about Hillary. That is clearly seen in her unwillingness to apologize for her vote for the Iraq war.

Hillary is a poseur, in the race just for the power and prestige. John McCain doesn't have the right stuff to take this country where it needs to go. Obama is the best choice for me...I am continually impressed at how he can articulate complex ideas without either talking down to average people nor dumbing down the ideas presented. He is not perfect (no one is), but he is the pick of this litter by far, IMHO.

Yes, this added info about Hillary just makes her a bigger creep in my book than I had already pegged her to be. Amazing. I used to defend the Clintons. Now I hold them both in contempt. This campaign brought me new revelations about Bill that I had overlooked previously[naively I admit], such as NAFTA and DOMA. It also has shown how low they'll both go for power. This chummy fellowship with right extremists really troubles me - and should truly trouble any progressive minded person.
Oh, and what idiot says seperation of church and state 'has gone too far'? The line is thinner now than it has ever been in this country.

Paul, do you want Pastor Wright to be the Pastor to the next President? Or do you prefer Pastor Leroy?

I didn't know that Jesus was in the White House????? Did he visit? Was He in charge? Or is this another way to join Church and State?
I think I've had enough hypocracy with the Clintons and enough religion from the narrow minded Bush administration.

If Obama gets in, you will see Pastor Wright as a frequent visitor because he means so much to Obama.

Jorge, you sound like an alarmist to me. I think with the level of scrutiny that will be on Obama and Wright, the permanent move to Washington for the entire Obama family will create a natural opportunity to diminish those bonds. I suspect that while Obama stood behind Wright, which took more guts than most of the pandering politicians we've seen in recent years, he has no desire to allow that relationship to act as a shadow over his administration.

Of course, when Barack is elected he will have all kinds of "other" black people in and around the White House.
I guess that could be scary for some folks.

["If Obama gets in, you will see Pastor Wright as a frequent visitor because he means so much to Obama."]
LOL!!
Yeah, and if John Kennedy gets elected, The Pope is going to get the office right next door to the Oval one, and a 'Veto' stamp to go with it!
(I happen to be old enough to remember hearing that...)
Some shit never goes away.
It just gets recycled.
And yes..., 'Dr. Webster'..., I typed "shit".
Deal with it, 'intellectually'.

Say What?, Your use of the "S" word is one of the words that can not be mentioned according to FCC rules. You can use the word "crap" instead.

How many times do we have to deal with the historically uneducated? The United States of America was founded with one of it's cornerstones being the freedom to practice each individuals personal religious belief, but...the Founding Fathers were Deists. How many more ignorant people are going to go on about getting Christ back in Washington D.C when he was never intended to be a part of the landscape. Read your frickin Bible. The Roman government did not want to kill Jesus...it was the influence that the Jewish elders had with the Roman government that allowed them to insist that Christ be put to death! Based on this scenario...how moronic to not fight for seperation of church and state. Please...get off of the cross, and do some research. It does not take much searching to find the principles that our Government was founded on (and why)! Instead of trying to dilute our science classes with Intelligent Design...why don't we imporve our US History classes to teach the real version of the creation of our wonderful Country?

The only way to rid this fascist administration is to remove 'all' the old players! The Clintons included. The "Family" that Hillary was a member of and may still be a member. In private, they preach Gospel of Biblical Capitalism,Military Might and American Empire. Do research on this and you will know truth.

Jorge,
in referrence to Wright, do you realize he was part of an elite group of pastors that was invited to the Whitehouse under Bill Clinton to absolve him of his transgressions surrounding the Lewinsky affair??? If this guy was anywhere near the radical he's being painted as do you really think he'd step foot near the Whitehouse???
