Looking at "Labor Standards" in Colombia
You'll hear Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton talk frequently about how trade agreements need to have labor standards and environmental standards. A perfect example of what they mean when they say "labor standards" can be seen in Colombia, a country with whom the United States is considering a trade agreement. Here's Chris Hayes:
Imagine a country where CEO's live in fear. In just the past five years, 400 CEO's -- from manufacturing, banking, real estate -- have been shot down in cold blood. (Thousands over the past 15 years.) Almost none of these murders have been solved. Indeed, over the past five years the percentage of CEO murders simply brought to trial has declined from 30% to zero. CEO's now more or less live in fear.
Can you imagine the US have friendly relations with such a place? Can you imagine a president expending political capital to treat that country favorably in an international agreement? Right. Of course not.
Of course, such a place does exist, but they're not murdering CEO's.
No, they're murdering trade unionists. And they're getting away with it.

I believe what is happening in Colombia is difficult to comprehend by many Americans. I had spent my life in the USA in a management capacity frequently fighting against the union that I sometimes saw as a threat to basic business principles. And when I visited Bogota, Colombia going to all the right places and associating with those of the rich and elite I believed the news reports of labor abuses as exaggerated. Then I moved there and ended up living among the people in a small town. My friends become those workers. I not only saw, but suffered the affects of how massive corruption within the government keeps labor laws from being enforced. I dare say that if any of those American congressmen walked in my shoes, instead of just flying in and being given the VIP tour, they would easily see that Colombia is not yet ready for an FTA with the US. That at this time more help goes to the people by not passing the FTA. The actual truth is almost beyond the comprehension of many Americans. I know it was mine for a long time. As compassionate members of the world Americans need to help the majority of Colombian people, but the FTA is not the way to do it and could do more harm than good.
