Asbestos Company Settles, Leaves Montana Residents in the Dust

W.R. Grace & Co., the mining company responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Libby, Montana residents, is finally going to pay for the damage it did. Well, sort of. On Monday, the company reached a $3 billion settlement with the families of people killed and those made ill by asbestos from the company's vermiculite mine between 1963 and 1990.The problem is the effects of asbestos don't immediately present themselves, so Grace's battle with Libby residents should be far from over because future diagnoses and lawsuits are sure to arise. But this week's settlement encompasses all future lawsuits as well, meaning current and future victims are going to get measly sums. The company isn't saying how it will calculate everyone's share but if the $3 billion were to be evenly dispersed to settle only the existing 120,000 lawsuits, each victim would receive $25,000. And that doesn't even account for the folks who will undoubtedly contract cancer and other asbestos-related diseases in the years to come. As the company's vice president told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Grace "want[s] to get on with business."

Mother Jones investigated the presence of asbestos in Eldorado Hills, CA in our May/June 2007 issue. But unlike the people in Libby, residents there only have government officials and themselves to blame.

Well, I am sorry--in my mind, this just serves to underscore how primitive Chinese culture is...

What the Hell???!!!

Well sure--because..., there was that Chinese reporter..., covering a mine accident...--who was beaten senseless...

In our Modern Society--WHO WOULD BOTHER???!!!

Discovery during civil trials reaped:

GM installed inferior, dangerous gas tanks in Pintos--because ultimately it was cheaper to pay off any resulting lawsuits...

A bogus study was commissioned to counter the one that predicted childhood suicides...

Oh, right, all those missing US Attorneys are in China, getting first dibs on Olympic seats...!!!

Or perhaps getting some lessons on Symbolism...

Its always unfortunate when people don't get what they deserve, why $25k per person when one would expect medical bills to way more than ten times that (maybe 100x that over the long haul), and why is impeachment 'off the table' (if anyone ever deserved it its the guys in the executive branch right now). I have to agree with Andy that there is a little irony given some of MoJos advertisers, which is made even more ironic by there recent criticism of the new republic for a BP connection. I don't get what the other Michael is talking about, but he cant even figure out that GM did not make the Pinto.

Don't strain yourself pumpkin...

You got me brother--Malibu it was (See CNN-Record $4.9 billion award against GM for dangerous fuel tanks); or perhaps this should read: Murder he wrote...

Murder? Well yeah if your drunk and rear end some one @ 50 MPH, and just how safe can a car be from any angle when hit @ 50+ MPH? Cars shrunk between '79 and the days of 25 cent per gallon gas, so is it all that surprising that the gas tank was 'only' 11 inches from the bumper instead of 20? That being said the suit may have encouraged GM to steep up, it does seem that GM issues a lot of recalls nowadays, but it seems to me that the media throws a s**t fit every time for GM and never for Toyota. GM gets screamed at for recalling SUVs that might catch fire, while when Toyota's new minivan gets recalled for having a gas tank thats unsafe in crashes we hear nothing about it, whats up with that? And you still seem incoherent to me.

HO, HO, Ho--more good stuff from MZ...

Crime consists of both a physical and mental element (mens rea = guilty mind).

"The court finds that clear and convincing evidence demonstrated that defendants' fuel tank was placed behind the axle on automobiles of the make and model here in order to maximize profits ... to the disregard of public safety," L.A. Superior Court Judge E. G. Williams, from the Wall Street Journal, Sept. 29, 1999.

Forget about being a Professor of Semantics--you don't need to be an expert in the study of meaning to know that those folks are just as mean as a person can possibly be...!!! Like, just ask their victims (with all those hellish burns...).

Of course, the subject here actually is asbestos poisoning...--I don't see you as even finding those people culpable--shouldn't they have tested their product better...; before exposing so very, very many people to it...???

It is true that WR Grace is culpable since they knew since the 30's that the vermiculite they were mining was severely contaminated with tremolite (the worst kind) asbestos. What is not talked about here is the DIY vermiculite insulation used in many homes around the nation and in Canada - and why the EPA did not release their consumer warning about it.

Lets see MW, nearly forty years of mining stuff thats known to be a possible carrier of asbestos, and as I mentioned before less than 1/10th the award the victims would need to help pay medical bills. Do I think they deserve what they're getting (or better yet more), well duh. I do how ever think the comparison you've made is a little apples to oranges. You know before you said anything about it I was prepared to assume that 90% or more of vehicles all have their fuel tanks behind the rear axle, and I still think thats a safe bet. Of course you could put the tank on the other side of the axle, and if its rear wheel drive and the drive shaft breaks (happened to my dads car around 350k), the thing could bounce up into your gas tank and cause the same problem, now aren't you an engineering genius? I also wonder if any other car of the era was rear ended at 50 MPH would it be any less likely to go up in flames? All that being said are there evil SOBs in every single company in the world who wouldn't think twice about endangering lives for money? I'm not stupid I've heard the audio tape of Enron employees talking about f**ing everyone over during the California energy crisis, and I know there are people like that and worse everywhere.

Guy you're as far off base as our lofty, dirty dealing Govt. boys--it's like..., how trucks, some sport utilities and minivans are still exempt from the gas guzzler tax...

WHOA NOW!!!!!!

The car (gas tank) in question was BARELY TOUCHED in that accident (hit at ten mph)--Yes Sir, I'm hearing some kind of hollow rattle, sounds like how a Federal Court found the 2006 Light Truck rules "... to be arbitrary and capricious; contrary to the Environmental Pollution Control Act;" where "the environmental impact assessment was inadequate ..."

The number of vehicles on the road rises annually--that law failed to counter the fact these new trucks (all together) would be emitting more CO2 emissions than in previous years...

Boyyo--how's it that bevies of permanent-magnet wind mills aren't popping up everywhere (the Maglev Wind Turbine = 20% higher output + low center-of-gravity perfect for offshore installations)???

No..., nowadays they're building Plug-In Hybrids with an electric range of 2o miles--then it switches to gas; yet today's batteries could power a car as far on a single charge as on a tank of gas, plus they charge in minutes instead of hours (Wikipedia--electric vehicles).

Right..., DUDE--sounds like you--yourself--are trying to coverup (WOW!!!)fatal Malibu gas tank explosions that weren't attributed to the unsafe design!!;...sounds like someone be allergic to "free" electricity and cars that don't fit in BIG GEORGE W'S BIG OIL'S BIG POCKET!!!!!!!!

Like WOW!!!

So you think the folks of Libby Mt will be left in the dust after years of suffering and deaths? We all have already been left in the dust and are dying because of their dust.If the folks of Libby get screwed again by WR Grace and this Govt, boy, I just don't know what to think except that maybe it is time for us to take things into our own hands.I got access to a bag of WR Grace asbestos from Libby and I guess we will have to just return the favor.Peole of Libby will not stand by and allow those who killed us to get away with murder. This is so crazy that this is even a issue. We are human beings who were poisoned to die, knowingly. We don't have much more to live for, except what is right. We shall see.Stay away from Libby Mt as Libby is not safe to anything that breathes.

Irving Stone wrote how, even in Jack London's day, your little guy didn't stand a chance in Federal Court--whenever the opposing party was a corporation...

MZ ol' man--you laughing when you tol' us 'bout how, actually, we all be in the same leaky boat here--because, hey, your ol' man's tired ol' drive shaft up and broke, bouncing into the gas tank... That's the thing with people who get a kick out of their own maliciousness--everything is always the fault of the lower class and the dopers. Actually, you're much, much closer than you possibly could have thought--RIGHT!!!--I'm a Sadomasochist, and I only feel good when I'm torturing myself by holding an innocent automotive engineering genius wrongly culpable...

I couldn't find your Motor Trend reference, nonetheless, this time..., I really do think..., I hear what you're saying: It's not WHO killed the electric car, it's WHAT electric car is that...???????

Mike Crill:

I didn't mean to sound callous in my last post (...your little guy...), that's just the way it came out...

Dr. Muromoto's book(s) are life savers--literally.

He wrote two, but I only see Healing Ourselves on Amazon. His other book is about the immune system (AIDS).

He's all about a microbiotic diet; the herb teas are available at the East/West Microbiotic Center in Culver City (or used to be--actually, I'm not precisely sure of the name...).

You might want to try taking cod liver oil (very high Vit. A); nowadays it's flavored (very tasty).

Life's a bitch--then you run into the damned exploiters...

Mike - In regards to your recent statement and the discovery of processed asbestos at the riverside park that has been believed to have been placed there last week I forwarded this statement and link to Mike Cirian, remedial on-sight project manager with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Libby police chief Clay Coker. You can account for your whereabouts the last few weeks - right.
