McCain's Frightening Foreign Policy Vision From 2000
At least Bush claimed that he wanted a "humble" foreign policy back in 2000. Apparently John McCain was gung-ho about adventures like the Iraq War and willing to say so publicly. Here's McCain in a February 2000 Republican debate:
"I'd institute a policy that I call 'rogue state rollback,'" said McCain. "I would arm, train, equip, both from without and from within, forces that would eventually overthrow the governments and install free and democratically- elected governments."
"As long as Saddam Hussein is in power," he added, "I am convinced that he will pose a threat to our security."
He would "arm, train, equip, both from without and from within, forces that would eventually overthrow" governments that we don't like? That's a recipe for chaos, and you shouldn't need the Iraq War to tell you so. In my view, the fact that McCain was ever this much of an out-and-out hawk is more scandalous than the fact that he slept with a lobbyist or that he was involved in the Keating Five. Holding positions this extreme and this dangerous ought to be considered worse than ethical or moral transgressions. After all, sleeping with a lobbyist doesn't get people killed.
McCain is now denying that this was his position. Specifically, his recent statement on "rogue state rollback" was: "I wasn't saying that we should go around and declare war." If you look at his quote, though, it sounds pretty much like he was suggesting we go around and declare war. Or at least we train and equip people who declare war for us.

Hey People,
ANd what is wrong with helping people who are trapped in oppressive countries, achieve freedom..? I don't understand how you can think it is ok for people, who don't have the means to arm themselves, ot suffer under such oppression..? Why do you refuse to help are them and bring them freedom in the future..? During colonial times, you lib's would have refused general Washington in his time of need...!!
You people are really twisted, self serving, snobs..!!
Bill
I'm sort of with Bill. Leading up to the invasion of Iraq, I thought that if Clinton was proposing the same thing, 3/4 of the people against the invasion would be for it and half of those for it would be against it.
My only disagreement with Bill is that where do you draw the line between legit freedom fighters and thugs like the Nguyen's, Marcos' or Contras? BushI after the first Gulf War is another example where we should have helped and didn’t. That is where the neo-cons have a history of backing the wrong side and creating more problems than they solve.

Bill you troll, any idiot can see via the example of Iraq that the kind of interventionism McCain wants causes chaos, genocide, and rallies opponents against what those in the region can easily label as an imperialist backed takeover. Nobody in a country under siege cares what some outsider says the intentions of their foreign government are, they are inherently untrustworthy in the eyes of locals, and at any rate as the sane says the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I Second that Bill N is trolling. Read a little deeper into history and you'll discover, from the Spanish-American war on to this debacle in Iraq, that no intervention by the U.S has been to 'liberate oppressed peoples' but rather to secure U.S. military and economic interests.

Ah the old Spanish American war, the intentions toward liberating Cuba were good, but of course after they were freed it was decided that they couldn't run their own country and that we would protect them and run certain areas of their gov for them. Then of course came the Phillipino independence movement which right wing control freaks decided they had to put down, and thus prevented the other territories gained in the Spanish American war from having the independence they claimed to grant Cuba. Of course when the Spanish Civil War came around and a bunch of prodemocracy leftists tried to keep the fascists from taking over the Republican isolationists refused to send money or weapons. A brave number of Americans decided to go and fight themselves if the government wouldn't do it but is was all to no avail and fascism spread through Europe uncontrolled. Bill of course doesn't care about facts hes just a troll.

Hey People,
No not a troll, just someone who was raised in, land of fruits and nuts, california but with ties to the south and midwest. So my sensabilities are kinda middle of the road. Even though you HATE it, i am what the majority of flyover America is and thinks. You can't handle that our country is moving to a much more conservative way. You thought you had it in the bag after the 70's with your, hippie ways, and free love and drugs, but no..!!! America woke up and realized that we DO have a mission in this world to help spread democracy and help the little guys out in the world..:-)
ANd like i said before, you people were the kind who would have told Gereral Washington to go pound sand.
Cowards.

Bill you're a troll and you always have been, if your so up on spreading democracy why don't you go to Iraq and see how many flowers they throw at you? Examples abound of so called attempts to spread democracy at the point of a barrel gone wrong, and when it really counts and there is no profit to be made or no great enemy to be defeated nobody cares. Where was democracy during the Phillopino revolution? Where was it during the Spanish civil war? If there wasn't a great rival to be beaten would the French have backed Americans against the British? Would the US have backed the Afghans against the USSR? Your a Naive retard if you think the only reason for going into Iraq was to spread democracy, and if you want to you can go there and be shot or IEDed for a lie sold to you after the other lie (about WMD) became so transparent it was laughable, but the rest of us are not so stupid. Give me the equivalent of Spanish civil war or the American revolution and I'll give the cause $100 out of my own meager college student pocket, and if you want you can lie to yourself and say the Bush doctrine is all it claims to be you can, but don't lie to the rest of us and claim its all about democracy.

Bill Nigh, what an enormous ego you have, thinking that *you* and your "kinda middle of the road" views represent the majority of Americans. And just who gave us this "mission in this world to help spread democracy and help the little guys out in the world"? And why don't we have a mission to help out the little guys in this nation?
And if George Washington were to return today he would end up in Guantanamo as an "unlawful enemy combatant". He was an insurgent and therefore a terrorist.
As for "moving to a much more conservative way", we did that 25+ years ago, and the nation is finally waking up to what a disaster that has been. Hopefully things will start moving back the other way and we will eventually be able to reclaim our place in the world.
