I get the feeling that Gen Zarei has fallen out of favor with the supreme powers in Iran. If he was still in good standing, none of this would have been reported, and of course, as a General and chief of police, he would never get arrested unless someone much more powerful ordered it. We can only speculate now, but the real story here is how/why Zarei upset these powers and why these powers feel they need to remove and humiliate him and destroy his reputation. Don't forget the constant struggle for power between the branches of Iranian government, and don't forget that the Supreme Leader remains in power partially because he is able to pit various branches of the Iranian gov against each other. For all we known, this entire allegation is false. There is a much, much bigger story here, but I suspect we will only learn how this piece fits into the larger puzzle years from now. This bit from the BBC is enlightening for Iranian scholars: "State media had recently reported that Gen Zarei had been replaced as police chief in Tehran, but had not explained why."

It is like accounting - just deduct 6 from his 72 virgins . . .
