RumInt: New Bush Iran Finding?
Counterpunch's Andrew Cockburn reports today that six weeks ago, Bush signed a new Iran "finding" that expands US aid to opposition groups to the Tehran regime:
Bush's secret directive covers actions across a huge geographic area – from Lebanon to Afghanistan – but is also far more sweeping in the type of actions permitted under its guidelines – up to and including the assassination of targeted officials. This widened scope clears the way, for example, for full support for the military arm of Mujahedin-e Khalq, the cultish Iranian opposition group, despite its enduring position on the State Department's list of terrorist groups.
Chasing down such a potentially explosive report on one of Washington's first balmy Friday afternoons is a challenge. Asked if the report sounded plausible, one Hill source contacted indicated, no, it does not. A second responded, "I have no information to support or refute this article. However, [the report's] credibility is undermined by the notion that a ship commander, during a moment of crisis that only is of several minutes duration, would have the time and luck to reach the CENTCOM head to solicit his advice and feedback during this short window of time."
Will keep chasing. Stay tuned.
Comments
Bush doesn't need to inform Congress of a Presidential Directive within six week. The Hill staffers won't have any clue.
Apparently our government is utterly incapable of learning from past mistakes. Just as Reagan and George HW Bush financed the terrorists who went on to form Al Qaeda, Geroge W Bush is dead set on financing the next generation of terrorists.
Sooner or later the terrorists we are funding today WILL turn on us as well. It is only a matter of time.

Tell me; is this one of Jason Leopold's "sources", who has no been "magically" transferred to become a ship commander?
Second question: is this comedy act of Mother Jones and Cockburn going to be taken on the road?

Support for MeK, Jundullah, etc., has been around for a while, but I fancy this totally anonymous 'leak' is just a psyop associated with the latest nuke offer to Iran, for which see 'Big powers to offer sweeteners to Iran' Elaine Sciolino, IHT, May 2, 2008 and elsewhere.

If I might add, the fact that right beneath it at CounterPunch's website is an article by David Isenberg introducing yet another RAND study preaching the doctrine of preventive nuclear attack against authoritarian nuclear armed regimes headed by psychotic dictators (other than the USA, I suppose, since it can hardly be expected to preventively nuke itself) reinforces the impression of psyops, of a rather last ditch nature.

With the Bush administration's history, stupidity, incompetence, hatred for America, as well as Cheney's insanity, you cannot assume that they are not serious about their threats. They don't care if their policies fuck this country, they are happy to slink off to a walled compound in a third world paradise, just like Mengele.

Israeli has told Bush that he must take down Iran before he leaves office. The VP will see to it that he does. The Jews contribute more money to the political parties than any other group. Money talks in our political system. As Senator Clinton said, Iran will be toast when she gets elected with that New York city money. Only Senator Obama has the courage to stand up to the Zionists. We are voting for Obama.

Permit me to wonder about 'Ishmael' (that is not the conventional transliteration of the Arab name). People who take an interest in these matters will know that Obama has gone to great lengths to reassure all sides of the American Jewish zionist establishment of his high regard for their wishes. I found it especially interesting to see this regarding JStreet, the new anti-AIPAC lobbying group, from Gershom Gorenberg, American Prospect, April 15, 2008
"JStreet’s advisory council includes prominent liberal fundraisers, such as Alan Solomont, former national finance chair of the DNC, and New York attorney Victor Kovner. Ben-Ami notes that Solomont is now raising cash for Barack Obama, and Kovner for Hillary Clinton."

W's just another in a long line of American (unsucessful) interventions in Iran.
Just wonder what the mid-east would have been like if we didn't sent in Roosevelt in '53 or if we pulled the plug on the Shah.

Actually that is the point almost everyone including you is missing. Consider all these as investments. The same advantages that were taken from previous “investments” outcome, could be taken again to promote wars and terrors and secure continuation of this profit-making machine. As long as one looks from the same view that you describe, practically nothing makes sense. However once you look from opposite view, then things start becoming clear.

MarthaA, the New American Century group are neocon Zionists. Our involvement in the middle east is all about Israel. The Arabs have the oil. Israel has Jews with money to buy the politicians. The American people want to support the Arabs because they have the oil. The reason that we do Israel's bidding is that the Jews contribute as much as 60% of the money to the major political parties.
"London review of books, 23 march 2006
The Israel Lobby
by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt"
Thanks in part to the influence Jewish voters have on presidential elections, the Lobby also has significant leverage over the executive branch. Although they make up fewer than 3 per cent of the population, they make large campaign donations to candidates from both parties. The Washington Post once estimated that Democratic presidential candidates ‘depend on Jewish supporters to supply as much as 60 per cent of the money’. And because Jewish voters have high turn-out rates and are concentrated in key states like California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania, presidential candidates go to great lengths not to antagonise them.
