McCain Wants a League of What Now?
Recently, McCain proposed a League of Democracies to replace the United Nations. It wasn't well-received:
The approach lacks any strategic framework.... How would the League of Democracies fight terrorism while excluding countries like Jordan, Morocco, Egypt and Singapore? What would be the gain to the average American to lessen our influence with Saudi Arabia, the central banker of oil, in a world in which we are still crucially dependent on that energy source?
McCain may now be suggesting an alternative — a League of Nations.
McCain may have misspoken. The League of Nations was established by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919-1920 and folded just after World War II in 1946. McCain was nine at the time. Perhaps he just got confused. Or maybe he's serious and he'll propose the Great Compromise next. We should see some development of this issue over the course of the day.
Update: McCain is speechifying about judicial nominees today. MyDD speculates about the possible nomination of William Howard Taft.
Comments
I am always distrustful of politicians, such as Senator McCain, who can't even pronounce the name of the country they are talking about correctly. It is Iran, not IRAN. Also I am very disturbed when politicians such as Senator McCain, haven't read their world history well enough to know that almost every major civilization in the world has gone into Iran and Iraq and few have lasted more than a few years. The people there bow to the new rulers, and go right on with their own ways and in the long run ignore the "conqueror".
Guess what. McCain is going to walk right into the White House. Print what you will, people are disgusted by the Democrats running and are going to assume the old white guy has some sense (he just has to!) and he'll win. Congrats to China and our other creditors they win.

Watch the video all the way to the end. His wisecrack about France is just pig-headed. If there is finally a pro-American President of France, why alienate the French further making stupid wisecracks?

John H. Humphrey:
It's kind of hard to ignore the good old USA, because the Bush Regime has been giving the Iraqis their freedom -- freedom like capitalism gave the Europeans at the end of the Futile System, and like we have in the United States. Capitalism gave the Europeans freedom from subsistence rights, which they had enjoyed for thousands of years, and made them hungry and homeless. In Iraq, Bush has given them freedom from subsistence rights, in much the same way. Prior to Bush the Iraqis had free water, free electric, free gas -- now they have freedom, but they can neither live in it or live on it-- and no jobs, they can't do anything, but their FREE. What more can they want. They just have to learn to eat freedom.

And John, I forgot -- prior to Bush's and the DLC's spectacular assault on the Iraqi, they had free education and free medical. Now they have their FREEDOM.
