ABC "Exclusive" On McCain and the Anti-Islam Pastor: Was MoJo Robbed? UPDATED
I'm glad that Good Morning America covered the connection between John McCain and Rod Parsley, the Ohio megachurch pastor who has said it is the United States' historic mission to see the "false religion" of Islam "destroyed."
But did ABC News' top investigative reporter, Brian Ross, have to swipe the story from us?
In the lead-in to piece, Diane Sawyer calls it an "exclusive Brian Ross investigation." Exclusive? How so? On March 12, Mother Jones first reported that Parsley, whom McCain had recently campaigned with and hailed as "a spiritual guide," had written a book in 2005, Silent No More, in which he essentially called for the eradication of Islam and branded the entire faith as a satanic conspiracy. The article noted that McCain had accepted Parsley's endorsement and explained that Parsley is a key political player in Ohio, where he has registered and driven to the polls tens of thousands of social conservative voters. Many websites and blogs linked to the article.
Following up on this piece, two weeks ago, Mother Jones and Brave New Films released a video which showed Parsley railing against Islam "as an anti-Christ religion that intends, through violence, to conquer the world" and basically calling for its destruction. The video juxtaposed Parsley's extreme anti-Islam rhetoric with video of McCain hailing Parsley at a February 26, 2006 campaign rally (the same rally featured in Ross' report). The footage of an excitable Parsley came from the DVD companion to his Silent No More book that is still sold by his World Harvest Church. It took me about six weeks to obtain the version of this DVD set that included Parsley's extreme anti-Islam remarks. One version of the DVD collection does not contain the disc covering Islam, and his church's store (which does not ship by first class or any overnight delivery service) was very, very slow in sending out the full collection that did.
The MoJo/Brave New Films video quickly drew an audience. A quarter of million people watched it on YouTube in two days. MSNBC played a long chunk of it. Many bloggers and sites posted the video. If you do a Google search on "Parsley, McCain and Islam," the first two links that appear are this video and the original Mother Jones article on Parsley and McCain. If you're reporting on McCain and Parsley, it's hard to miss this stuff. In fact, the day the Mojo/Brave New Films video was posted, a member of ABC News' investigative team called me to ask where I had obtained the Parsley footage. I told him and graciously offered to help him out--and then never heard back from him.
Not surprisingly, the most wow-'em Parsley excerpts in the ABC report match the Mojo/Brave New Films video. Yet the ABC piece is presented in a look-at-what-Brian-Ross-found manner. Ross, though, did not discover any additional Parsley material. So where's the exclusivity of which Sawyer speaks?
Ross's three-minute piece was well done. He pointed out that McCain's relationship with Parsley has become an issue in the Arab media. He made the right point:
In dealing with what he calls the central threat of our times, Senator McCain says the U.S. has failed to win the hearts and minds of the Islamic world. But if that is McCain's plan if elected, he seems to have already badly complicated it by recruiting the support of an evangelical minister now known in the Arab world as a hate-monger.
But did Ross and ABC--which plastered an "ABC News Investigation" tag on the report--have to present this story as if they had dug up this news? The word "exclusive" is widely overused and abused in the media. It's almost become a joke. ("Tonight, we have an exclusive interview with Presidential Candidate X...who just happens to have given five other exclusive interviews in the past two days to other media outlets.") But when you introduce a "news investigation" with the term "exclusive," the presumption is that you got it first.
Journalists at Mother Jones and other non-behemoth media outfits often hope that when they unearth a significant story it will end up on television sets across the nation. And the McCain-Parsley tale is an important one, precisely for the reason that Ross emphasized: it could prompt even greater suspicion in the Muslim world of U.S. actions and motives. It deserves network attention. But did the price have to be network expropriation?
UPDATE: Brian Ross called to apologize. He said that it had been wrong for Good Morning America to tag his piece an "exclusive" and that he had been unaware of my stories on Parsley. He offered to revise the written on-line version of the piece to note that Mother Jones had the Parsley story first.

I'm not surprised at such cheesiness from the outfit that employs Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolous. Somebody should say something though. Do you have a link to the ABC story? Maybe some Mojo readers can post some inquiring comments.
Here's a link to the story on ABC: click here

Why are you still claiming an exclusive based on reading a three-year-old book? Rev. Parsley's views about Islam are common knowledge. You don't get to act self-righteous because you sat on a story for 36 months instead of 38. Your criticism also betrays any knowledge of Islam. If you had bothered to study what Islam teaches, how it came about, what is done in its name, you'd be as concerned about it as Rev. Parsley.

This is typical of television -- they steal all the time from real reporters, such as the folks at Mother Jones and the real newspapers that do this kind of investigative work, then pretend it is their own work.
It's typical.

Unfortunately Rev. Parsley is right.
Do the research.

I admire Rev. Parsley for saying what many people think. But he is wrong. The problem is with the Jewish Fascists. Israel does have it problems. A civil rights group in Israel has released a report which claims racism is rife in Israel and highly damaging to those it touches.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel said Israel was seeing a new level of racism that was damaging privacy and freedom of expression.
The report pointed to a large percentage rise in the number of racist incidents against Arabs, sometimes brought about by Jewish youths who see Arabs as “unclean”.
Social analysts reported only half of Israel’s Jewish population believed that Jews and Arabs should have full equal rights.
Among Jewish respondents, 55 percent supported the idea that the state should encourage Arab emigration from Israel while 78 percent opposed the inclusion of Arab political parties in the government.
The report concluded the results were the consequence of a racist campaign and anti-Arab racist policies led by political and military leaders.

Parsley is right about Islam, an MoJo is part of the problem. When Islam takes over the world and closes down magazines like yours, you will have only yourselves to blame.
And the rest of us who have known that Islam is a tool for global domination will have you to blame as well.

What is funny about these blogs is that they are being quite hypocritical. Did the fact that Obama has a bigot pastor," not racist by definition", or the fact that he associates with known terrorist ever come to light on your blog? If you want to be a legitimate source for the pastor angle you need to tell both sides of the story and stop being a typical blogger hypocrit. They both should be viewed in the same light on your blog for your blog to be credible. What is good for the goose is good for the gander,,, Right??? Not so for your blog. Typical....

It was right for Ross to make the call.
Parsley is dead wrong - no part of our nation was founded on the mission of destroying Islam. Only brain-washed, home-schooled Christian morons would believe that bologna. I was glad that McCain denounced him and I've sent emails to all my VA senators to say as much and ask them to denounce Christiano-Fascism in their political lives, as well.

Paul said: "home-schooled Christian morons." This shows your prejudice of a lifestyle that is not your own. Don't forget Paul, your roots. Your mother is a Bible thumping. May be hate for your mother is coming through. Check your hate at the door.

Nonsense, Silly Willy. My mother is a Christian moderate. However, "home-schooled","Christian", and "moron" are descriptors, which means that when I use them together I am describing a person for whom I absolutely and apologetically feel contempt. That is not the same as being contemptuous of an individual who happens to be home-schooled, Christian or a moron individually. It's sort of like a Reese's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is chocolate, peanut butter and a cup all at once, but not all cups are chocolate and peanut butter and not all peanut butter and chocolate are cups. Now, those chocolate peanut butter cups I just love. Oh, and contempt and hate are not interchangeable terms, for the record. That is what makes language so amazing. Check your ignorance at the door before you try a smackdown.

Realize that if McCain didn't reject that idiot's endorsement, "Muslims" (this time even the "Moderate" ones) would see his inauguration as a declaration of war against Islam...

If we're going to get into the role that such as Mother Jones can take in this election, as regards 'fearless journalism', there is a subject just waiting to be looked into in depth. That is John McCain's curious adamant opposition to the request by the families of Vietnam MIAs to have Congress look into reports of live sightings of their loved ones. I've seen a video of one such hearing request, and his hard, negative response is extraordinary. The rumor is that he made some sort of agreement with his captors for lenient treatment in exchange for...whatever all, which is also supposed to have taken the form of radio statements pleasing to his captors. If he is going to trash Obama for not having been a vet - or being an appeaser - his own record needs to be looked at very closely, or we're getting into the realm of hypocrisy. Who's going to be willing to do that investigative journalism? Can we expect the MSM to do it? I rest my case, for a REAL 'MoJo Exclusive'.

I don't think McBush can avoid being waterboarded on this issue because some dumb-ass surrogate is sure to bring up Rev. Wright. And I don't think Obama should be timid about playing up McBush's blatant pandering to the right wingnut Dominionist crowd, all along, including the Revs Hagee and Parsley Sage-Thyme (now) and the Revs Robertson and Falwell (then), and all that AFTER he went on record dissing "the agents of intolerance." Presumably, these theocrats became tolerant once McBush put his hat into the ring.
But remember, McBush is nothing if not protean: anyone recall that snide smug smirk he flashed his potential Veep Romney when he quipped, "Oh, I agree with one thing, Governor, you're certainly the candidate of CHANGE, har har har." So, prior to running as Bush III, Johnny boy sucks up to the neocons by supporting waterboarding (and he, a Vietcong "victim" himself), voting against veterans' programs, and completely reversing himself on a variety of other issues when, earlier on, as "the Maverick," he voted exactly the opposite.
His people are already saying there is a difference between the two, Obama having sat in his spiritual lunatic's congregation for many years, and McBush not only not being a part of his spiritual lunatic's congregation, but only now hearing about the mad rantings of Hagee. My take is, McBush, being bereft of genuine spiritual values himself (oh, yeah, God made him to fess up in that hotel in Hanoi about our being imperialist, colonialist aggressors), will reach out for any old Jebus lovin' bubble-poundin'pastor with links to rubes who watch Sunday School Television Christer (SSTC) and, as we now know, include among their ranks the defrocked Hammer, Tom Delay. (!).
If the Dems don't git their [deleted] together, and soon, we may have a third term yet.

It's great to see that the work of independent media, who actually have something interesting and true to say, can get this much attention.
However, it's sad that who actually did all the work isn't mentioned, thus meaning that a lot of people will continue watching big media, letting such interesting pieces as this one pass by.

Brian Ross may be one of a very few seemingly outspoken reporters, and props to him for apologizing, regardless of motivation. But how many pay much attention to ANBCBSFox anyway - the question is, did Stewart or Colbert do the story, and if so did they credit MoJo?

Ladies & Gentlemen, Please, please be kind to each other. Let's face it, individuals like Parsley, Hagee, and others of their ilk are nothing more than Hucksters selling Snake Oil. These so-called religious men have been sprewing nothing but hate for years, suckering the poor faithful into paying for their mega-churches and million dollar homes. It is time to walk away from such garbage.
Posted by: Frank Libbon on 05/23/08 at 10:22 PM Respond
These Christian Zionists like Pastors Hagee and Parsley have it all wrong. They are out of the mainstream, unlike me. Faith in Jesus Christ has replaced physical lineage as the determining factor for identifying God's chosen people. There is neither Jew nor Greek...for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Flesh and blood can not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. “You must be born again.”(Jn 3:3) If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Gal 3:28-29) ( In Genesis, God promised that whosoever blesses Abraham and his seed, God would also bless. So, whosoever blesses Christians, God blesses. How much better can it get than that? Want a blessing? Then, do something to bless God's Chosen People, Abraham's seed: Christian believers in Jesus Christ!)
…“hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth…” (Acts 17:26). God is not a racist. Through faith in Christ Jesus, all who believe—Jew or Gentile—are made citizens of heavenly "Zion," the "Commonwealth of Israel." All believers comprise the "Israel of God." (See Eph. 2:11-22 and 4; and Gal. 6:14-16) Matthew 21:43, Jesus declared to the Jews: "Therefore say I unto you, the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation(Gentile) bringing forth the fruits thereof." Based, then, strictly on the testimony of Jesus our Lord, we know for sure that Jews who reject Jesus—and almost all the Jews who live in the U.S.A. and who populate today's nation of Israel fall into this category—are not God's Chosen.

You couldn't have been clearer, Pastor, about why christianity is very dangerous & why i personally have had to find a more fair, benevolent God & in doing so, have had to denounce organized religion all together. I'm sorry, but the Bible is full of ambiguous scriptures similar to your postings & man's EGO is rampant thru-out, ie. ONLY Christians qualify as God's 'chosen people', 'heaven paved in gold', hatred & punishment for alternative lifestyles & unfamiliar peoples & beliefs, etc, etc. which makes me seriously question the validity of the Bible & it being 'inspired' by God at all [or one i would want to worship]. I firmly believe that humans have tainted & used the Bible to support any control & ill they bring. These bogus religions may be right about 1 thing they're preaching, that we're in 'the end times', however, it's not GOD who's bringing that end, it's our disrespect for other people & species & our precious planet!!!
If the responsible, caring, THINKING people in this country don't vote down the mindless, selfish, robotic, fascist right-wing followers this time around, you better get the old bomb-shelters ready for WWIII.
I have already gotten off the sinking ship & have moved to Costa Rica, only to find that the greedy gringos are bound & determined to ruin yet another beautiful country - supposed 'Christians' are spreading their 'message' here while importing guns [illegally], their extremely detrimental philosophies & demented sexual & monetary appetites - to a place where crime & greed used to be unheard of & where 'family' is truly important [not just given lip service to] & where the government truly cares & facilitates the upward movement of the poor w/free education, medical care & low cost public transportation - how can a poor country do this? NO MILITARY funding! But, they are getting the [ungodly] 'message' alright - crime is on the rise, along w/the high-rises - the ocean is becoming a cesspool & being over fished, forests clear-cut, the beat goes on & on & on...Unfortunately, greed is a dis-ease that spreads faster than a cancer & kills the heart of societies.
Unfortunately, there is nowhere left to go or hide & unless the US faces it's true responsibility to the world, by sharing it instead of taking it over. The only honest, effective way to spread 'our democracy' is by example, not force & if we don't start getting the 'message' right & then practicing what we preach, preacher, our mighty military will make no difference & we won't have to wait for the terrorist, we'll do ourselves in!
Jesus states very clearly in that Bible you thump, Pastor, that money is the root of all evil, so take heed, America, cuz 'once you sell you soul, you can not buy it back!'
I plan to put in my absentee vote, inspite of losing faith that there will be any significant 'turnabout' in the 'The American Way'. As an American citizen looking for a tranquil 'home' away from a country i used to be proud to say i was from, i now have to brace myself for any negative reaction my status may bring.
I can only hope & pray that i'm wrong & if i'm right, that there's still time for us to 'get it right' in order to reverse the damage we've done thus far - at home & around the world...gracias for reading my rant. Good luck this November!
