Wesley Clark Clarifies
Or, as he puts it, reiterates. Here's his statement responding to the controversy created by his comments over the weekend.
I have made comments in the past about John McCain's service and I want to reiterate them in order be crystal clear. As I have said before I honor John McCain's service as a prisoner of war and a Vietnam Veteran. He was a hero to me and to hundreds of thousands and millions of others in Armed Forces as a prisoner of war. I would never dishonor the service of someone who chose to wear the uniform for our nation.
John McCain is running his campaign on his experience and how his experience would benefit him and our nation as President. That experience shows courage and commitment to our country — but it doesn't include executive experience wrestling with national policy or go-to-war decisions. And in this area his judgment has been flawed — he not only supported going into a war we didn't have to fight in Iraq, but has time and again undervalued other, non-military elements of national power that must be used effectively to protect America. But as an American and former military officer I will not back down if I believe someone doesn't have sound judgment when it comes to our nation's most critical issues.
In short, he's not shutting up. I know I was critical of Clark yesterday, but I'll admit, it is a pleasant (and obviously foreign) experience to watch a Democrat not backing down on national security.
Comments
The Clinton administration cut short his stint as NATO commander by 3 months after repeated conflicts with the Army (he wanted more Apache combat helicopters in Kosovo) and with Michael Jackson (the British General, not the child-craving singer), who was commanding British forces there. Generally speaking, Clark wanted to pursue the war more aggressively than those he beefed with.
Wesley Clark was involved in the raid of David Koresh's cult compound in Waco, Texas, which ended in a catastrophic fire that killed 75 cult members. (4 federal ATF agents had been killed by the cult, and 16 wounded, at the start of the standoff.)
I'm glad to see someone who says what he thinks without trying to pander to one segment of the electorate or another. I happen to agree with Clark about McCain and his "experience". Military service does not equal executive capability. I want to know what someone may do faced with decisions that need to be made, not what slogans or cliches he can come up with.

He's not backing down because what he's saying is 100% correct. Clark looks at things strategically, not tactically, and that is how a President needs to think.
Suggesting that he "back down" or that he "Said something wrong" is inadvisable and simply incorrect.

Clark disqualified McCain by saying that he can't think "strategically". I would like to know what qualifies Obama to do so.

Part of the reason that Democrats back down on national security, is because you and the rest of the press so readily embrace the GOP spin on national security matters. Yesterday was a prime example. And now, after criticizing him, you are going to compliment Clark for not backing down? Give me a break.

JR, I'd cite his ability to coalesce complex ideas and put them into words, as well as his forethought re: the Iraq invasion, as two examples. He's clearly gifted intellectually, which also helps.

I agree. The funny thing is, the comment that caused the most controversy was in direct response to what the questioner asked, i.e. about McCain being shot down. I predicted that Obama would have to reject these remarks, yet again. But as you aptly pointed out, what choice does he have? The media is so in love with the straight talk express that if anyone questions his actual qualifications when it comes to military experience and how it is relevant to him being president, you must be demeaning his service. BHO has to steer clear from this line of argument because Mr. Straight talk will use it as a bludgeon, and it will provide further fodder that BHO hates America for low information voters (I hate the expression, but it's true).
I absolutely don't think people should start dissing McCain's military record just for the heck of it, but if we are not allowed to question his actual qualifications, since no one has a problem doing the same to BHO ad naseam, what's the point? Why even have the election? McStraight talk has it in the bag.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before failed former Democrat presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark joined the growing anti-Jewish wing of the Democrat Party. Retired general Wesley Clark drew harsh criticism after saying that “New York money people” are pushing America into a war against Iran.

MC-CAIN’S EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTER AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
Considering his:
• Sacrifice of American Wealth and Blood for the Sole Benefit of Israel
• Amnesty for Illegal Mexicans Aliens Usurping Jobs and Services
• Outsourcing of Jobs and Technology to China
• Early Release from Captivity for Military Secrets
• McCain-Feingold Legislation Suppressing Freedom of Speech
• McCain-Leiberman Control Gun Legislation
• Slander and Ridicule of Huckabee, Romney, and Ron Paul
• Roberts and Falwell, “agents of intolerance”
• Roe vs. Wade Sacrificial Killing of Children
• To “occupy Iraq for 100 years”, “bomb Iran”, and “just keep Afghanistan”.
• Veto of Bush Tax Cuts
• Keating Five Crooks
• Unsolved Recession and Inflation Problem
• Unsolved Heath Care Problem
• Unsolved Social Security Problem
• Long Scandalous, Contentious, and Non-Productive Political Career
Can such an incompetent and dishonest politician; and such a pretentious Christian and patriot, insanely dishonoring Christian culture and Constitution rule, ever be trusted to cherish and honor the American People?
With Leiberman Neo-Liberal Princess Hillary burnt at the stake by the victorious Kennedy Liberals, shall the Reagan Conservatives give this notorious Podhoretz Neo-Conservative puppet, Insane McCain, a date with presidency, or a date with the Republican firing squad?

What are Obama's qualifications to be Commander-In-Chief?
Posted by: Isopluvial on 07/01/08 at 3:39 PM Respond
He never said anything wrong in the first place.

I agree that Gen. Clark said nothing wrong to begin with. None of his critics have offered that the General said McCain was a hero of his for his POW experience, but that does not qualify him to be commander-in-chief and president. Judgment does, and he thinks Sen. Obama has the judgment required to be commander-in-chief. He did NOT degrade or disrespect Sen. McCain's service to the country. The Republicans cannot make that same claim when it comes to Sen. Kerry's service to the country. How soon some "forget."
