"In the 21st Century, Nations Don't Invade Other Nations"

McCain today, speaking about Russia and Georgia.

I don't even have to say it. Easiest blog post ever.

I don't think he's lying. I think he really doesn't know. Seriously, he's as out of touch with reality as when he went through the Baghdad market with a massive military escort and thought he proved Iraq was returning to normal.

I think the defense will be that an invasion is an invasion only if someone else does it, or else that we did invade other countries in the 21st century, but we were right and so that's different.

Dear Mr. McCain,

O rly?

Sincerely,
Iraq

Watching that made my brain cry.

During the Post WWII era, when the US has sent troops in to another country (never once declaring war), we've often been told that we were stepping in to help a legitimate government fend off an aggressor.

Occasionally, the description seems to fit the events (Korea, Gulf War I). But why do we still maintain a massive military presence in Korea more than half a century later?

More often, it's been to prop up a government Americans wouldn't stand for in our own country (Vietnam, a few places in Central America..) and sometimes it's just been a plain and simple invasion (Panama, Grenada, Iraq...) to replace a government that OUR government didn't happen to like.

And in other instances, we didn't seem to know what the f*ck we were supposed to be doing (Balkans, Somalia), mucking around in the middle of someone else's (un)civil war.

John McCain said, in 1993:
There is no reason for the United States of America to remain in Somalia. The American people want them home, I believe the majority of Congress wants them home, and to set an artificial date of March 31 or even February 1, in my view, is not acceptable. The criteria should be to bring them home as rapidly and safely as possible, an evolution which I think could be completed in a matter of weeks.

Our continued military presence in Somalia allows another situation to arise which could then lead to the wounding, killing or capture of American fighting men and women. We should do all in our power to avoid that.

I listened carefully to the President's remarks at a news conference that he held earlier today. I heard nothing in his discussion of the issue that would persuade me that further U.S. military involvement in the area is necessary. In fact, his remarks have persuaded me more profoundly that we should leave and leave soon.

And he was right.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if he'd look at Iraq with the same critical eye?? Or for that matter, wouldn't it be refreshing if Obama would look at Iraq with such a critical eye, and say he's going to pull-us-the-hell-out?!?!

Hey give the guy a break; that's the voice of experience speaking after all.

And besides, you should have respect for your elders, and realize that after 5+ years he just can't remember how we got into this mess in Iraq in the first place.

Maybe he though we invaded and occupied Iraq before the great 2000 infonet debacle

Maybe he thinks that the first Desert Storm was the invasion...

Seriously folks... and right wing trolls who are looking and posting on this blog... Do you really want THIS man to be your voice to the world?
