I know they control congress. I also know that they have totally screwed the pooch on the war and energy.

With the war, Bush has said many times "We are there at the request of the Iraqis". Now the Iraqis want a timetable and Congress should be all over it.

With energy, thy should revoke all oil tax breaks, implement a windfall tax (similar to the one Reagan enjoyed) and use all of that money for alt-energy. Also mandate improved emission standards for coal plants. Let Bush veto it. Let McCain say his bit. All ammo for the future!

The Dems possess a majority, just not enough of a majority to overturn vetos. Yeah, they shouted all the rhetoric about taking control of Congress and ending the war and yaddah yaddah yaddah. Its saddening to see them compromising on those issues but they have to or else they won't get anywhere with anything in their agenda.

Btw, theres an article on yahoo about a list that is regulary compiled on cultural changes and handed to professors to keep them updated on the world outside the university. Apparently, some kids now think Watergate has to do with Monica blowing bill in the oval office. Sad...

No, they don't have to compromise on anything as important as the Iraq war. Our government should grind to a halt unless Democrats suggestions are met by the President - he is NOT the dictator.

Democrats don't have a voting majority, and they are terrified of being portrayed as holding up Congressional business and losing the general election. They have capitulated on much that I believe they hope to overturn if they win an election. The higher road may have been to do the opposite, but it's too late now. Congress can't just "implement a tax" or "stop a war" it's not that easy, esp. without the vote majority and a sitting Republican despot running a well-oiled corruption machine with the conglomerate-owned media in the pocket. I'd be scared too. Actually, I AM.
