POW as Crutch
Tell me how McCain's response here is in any way relevant to the question:
JAY LENO: Welcome back, Sen. McCain, for one million dollars, how many houses do you have? (Laughter)
JOHN MCCAIN: You know, could I just mention to you, Jay, and a moment of seriousness. I spent five and a half years in a prison cell, without—I didn’t have a house, I didn’t have a kitchen table, I didn’t have a table, I didn’t have a chair. And I spent those five and a half years, because—not because I wanted to get a house when I got out. And you know, I’m very proud of Cindy’s father, he was a guy that barely got out of high school, fought in World War II in the Army Air Corps, came home and made a business and made the American dream...
That is just so bald! So shameless! The gall it takes to invoke something so serious and so redoubtable simply to avoid a politically difficult question is truly astounding.
We've been here before on MoJoBlog, but I don't have faith that the rest of the Left will join me in talking about McCain's exploitation of his POW experience. In 2004, the Right took John Kerry's frequent invocation of his Vietnam service as license to criticize an aspect of Kerry's candidacy that Kerry had hoped to turn into a major strength. I would argue that McCain has given the Left the same opportunity. The Right used lies and smears and I would never suggest the Left do the same. No one needs to claim that McCain left other prisoners behind, for example. But pointing out that John McCain's willingness to exploit his imprisonment in Vietnam for political gain is a sign of character strikes me as entirely within acceptable bounds.

That's one of the things that made Karl Rove so good: his ability to fight dirty so well. The democrats will never stoop to free-boat level. It saves their integrity, but maybe not the white house.
It's a basic principle, that the Dems don't seem to get. You attack your opponents strong points. I don't have the skill myself, but look what they did to Kerry. He was a medal-wearing war-hero. How could he not beat Bush? Well, we found out.
Why don't they challenge McCain on torture? He caved to Bush on the signing statement nullifying the prohibition of torture. Yet he claims to have been mistreated himself.
Ask how he can support the War on Terror after having been the supposed victim of injustice himself? Suggest that he is weak on torture because he wasn't actually mistreated.

I noted elsewhere that the Reps used Hillary's comment about "Obama made a speech in 2002" in an ad attacking Obama's lack of experience. The ad of course did not point out that the speech in question was against "a dumb war, a rash war" that all the experienced people got us into. If McCain is going to attack using Demo quotes from the primaries, then there ought to be plenty of stuff from the McCain bashers in the Rep party to counter with. Remember, most of his own party was praying he'd drop out. If only we could catch one saying "You go to the convention with the candidate you have, not the candidate you wish you had."

I read in John McCains auto-biography that shortly after he was shot down the Veitnamese stripped him down naked, bound his hands, and then strung him upside down , spread-eagled, from a overhead beam. Then the Comodante of the Hanoi Hilton whipped his testicles with a handful of frayed electrical cords. Apparently, according to his wing-man, McCain "howled like a jack-ass caught in a tar-pit" and came out of the cell "with a odd, crabbing walk and a fixed, messianic look in his eye". Later, as he and the other prisoners squated on the cold concrete floor, shoveling molded rice into their mouth's with manacled hands, he muttered to his Wing Commander, "Once I get in the Oval Office and have my finger on the ICBM button, all these non-occidentals had better watch their backs." I have the adress of a officer whom witnessed that conversation as a POW in Hanoi at that Prison with John McCain. He will swear to the details of that conversation if someone will help him settle his bar-tab at the Ebb Tide Lounge in Ft. Lauderdale. I'll put you in touch with him. He's got a story to rell. Contact me, this is Urgent!

Just because he spent 5 years in a POW camp does not qualify him to be president. He did indeed make propaganda films for the Viet Cong. And I truly believe that the only reason he didn't leave early is because his Admiral father would have disowned him, and he would have faced the remainder of life as a coward. He really had no choice. It was not patriotism and love of country, but pure self-interest. Here is a man who keeps telling us that he has integrity and substance. I just don't see it - I've been looking for the last ten years, but have not found it. All pols are not equal - a conservative pol is not the same as a progressive pol. You have only to look at John McCains actual voting record to be completely turned off if you are in any way a decent person.
