Absent from the RNC: Any Solutions for the Economy

Why? Because Republicans apparently don't think the economy needs solving. Here's Harold Meyerson:

I have combed the schedule of events here without finding a single forum, workshop or kaffeeklatsch devoted to what John McCain and the Republican Party propose to do about America's short- and long-term economic challenges. I've found four panels on what to do about the Middle East, but not one on what to do about the Middle West.
Some events deal with aspects of economic policy, to be sure: The Consumer Electronics Association is sponsoring a salute to free trade. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Vote for Business Bandwagon. The American Petroleum Institute, in conjunction with the American Gas Association and the National Mining Association, is throwing a wingding for Republican governors. And I count two forums on tax issues....
Then again, the Republicans here plainly don't believe that the economy needs fixing. On Monday, a New York Times poll of Republican convention delegates showed that 57 percent believe the American economy is in very good or fairly good shape.

This is in keeping with yesterday's speeches. And it shouldn't be a surprise. This is the campaign run by a guy who said just yesterday, "This election is not about issues. This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

Oh, and somebody tell Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam that they're being ignored.

Comments

The RNC Convention is about "feel good" stuff and certainly not about anything negative. All the emphasis on patriotism implies that being anything other than a Republican makes you less American, or so it seems.

GOP doesn't have time to think about economy. They are busy figuring out what to do about Palin. Hopefully, DEMs are having fun watching the soap opera.

No one talks about the economy, that's to deal with AFTER the election. No one relates to what a trillion dollars is when this “trillion dollar” figure is tossed around in the media. For example:
Keeping in mind that the U.S. annual gross domestic product is about $15 trillion.
• The Bush administration revealed America's budget deficit will climb to a record high of more than half-a-trillion dollars.
• As of February ’08, the meltdown in the US subprime real-estate market has led to a global loss of 7.7 trillion dollars in stock-market value.
• In order to bail out Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac , Congress increased the national debt by a whopping $800 billion sending it over the $10 trillion mark for the first time in history!
• Since the passage of NAFTA and the creation of the World Trade Organization in 1994, America’s massive trade deficits has surpassed $5 trillion.
• Foreigners own $2.5 trillion more of American assets than Americans own of foreign assets.
• There are roughly $6 trillion in US dollar-backed assets around the world which could be quickly dumped if foreign holders of US dollars start selling their paper on the open market.
• The non-partisan Government Accountability Office that says the U.S. government faces a $53 Trillion shortfall to cover the costs of promised benefits in its entitlement programs: Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
Meanwhile, the U.S.’s national debt is expanding by about $1.4 billion a day -- or nearly $1 million a minute.

In her acceptance speech Sarah Palin said that John McCain would be a compassionate president! Is she talking about the John McCain that in 26 years never voted for raising the minimum wage? Eighteen times John McCain voted NO to raise the living standards of the neediest Americans.
