One Person Who Could Tell John McCain Who Invented the BlackBerry
Elise Pickering, a member of the Women for John McCain Steering Committee who lobbied for BlackBerry's creator, Research in Motion, earlier this year. (Via the Senate Lobbying Database.)

It would surprise me if John McCain even uses a Blackberry, much less know or care who invented the Blackberry. Does John McCain use a Blackberry?
John McCain has NO f-idea what a Blackberry is - he can't even send email!

There are photos of him using a BlackBerry, and he's said he uses one.
But there was no claim that he "invented" the BlackBerry, any more than Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet. The aide's reference was to McCain having facilitated wireless telecommunications, symbolized by the BlackBerry he held up. That's crystal clear when you read the quote:
"He did this," Douglas Holtz-Eakin told reporters this morning, holding up his BlackBerry. "Telecommunications of the United States is a premier innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce committee so you're looking at the miracle John McCain helped create and that's what he did."
The DNC's spin is as dishonest as the RNC's spin on Gore's remark, and as with Gore, the media are just swallowing it unquestioningly, in this case along with the lefty blogs.
Absolutely infantile.

I don't get it. We had very innovative telecommunications way back longer than 15 years ago, and there's not a darn thing the commerce committee or anyone else could have done to stop, hinder, or help its progress so long as people were demanding more services. All the committee did was deregulate the airwaves like they did everything else, which is why our better faster connections are getting all their tubes clogged, kinda like what happened to CB when everybody jumped on the wagon.

By that advisor's account, then, all the committee members are equally responsible for the Blackberry.

The relevance of the scandal is the McCain never really accomplished anything of substance during his time heading the commerce committee. He from all accounts had no substantial agenda and no major achievements. As a result they have to make a BS claim that he facilitated the creation of new technologies that he really had no part in.
The real scandal is the lack of any accomplishment that is highlighted by the fact that they had to lie about it.
