Hey Rush Limbaugh: Keep Digging
I enjoyed this.
Rush Limbaugh is quoted in a new Spanish-language Obama ad that ties John McCain to the nativist fringe of the Republican Party. The ad itself isn't exactly fair — McCain has showed a willingness to kowtow to that nativist fringe, but he's still probably the GOP's leading advocate for a humane approach to immigration reform. But Limbaugh doesn't believe in that humane approach, and in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published today, he isn't standing up for John McCain's record on immigration issues.
Instead, he's arguing that he isn't as big a jerk as the quotes in the Obama ad make him look. Limbaugh notes the quotes and then provides the full paragraphs from which they came, with the mistaken belief that somehow the context proves he isn't a bigot. In fact, the context just reinforces the original point. See for yourself.
Supposedly out-of-context quote:
"...stupid and unskilled Mexicans."
Supposedly exculpatory context:
"If you are unskilled and uneducated, your job is going south. Skilled workers, educated people are going to do fine 'cause those are the kinds of jobs Nafta is going to create. If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people, I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do -- let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."
Second supposedly out-of-context quote:
"You shut your mouth or you get out!"
Supposedly exculpatory context:
"And another thing: You don't have the right to protest. You're allowed no demonstrations, no foreign flag waving, no political organizing, no bad-mouthing our president or his policies. You're a foreigner: shut your mouth or get out! And if you come here illegally, you're going to jail."
Turns out, the full paragraphs are just as xenophobic and hateful as the isolated quotes. Why? Because Rush Limbaugh is xenophobic and hateful. Funny how that works.
Comments
Certainly not a Limbaugh fan but I think you've missed the key piece of context for the second quote: "You think the Limbaugh Laws are harsh? Well, every one of the laws I just mentioned are actual laws of Mexico today!".
I'm sure there's still plenty to debate there but it undoubtably changes the meaning of the quote.
I just don't understand why the Obama campaign would decide this is a good time to bring out an add that's just as misleading as the "Disrespectful" McCain one when it seemed like the broader media was just starting to agree that the Republican campaign was become particularly deceitful?
What is wrong with what Rush says...?
He is just speaking the truth and the majority of Americans agree with HIM..!!!

Actually it is Obama's Pastor Wright that is a racist and hateful. Obama spent 20 years being trained and prep by Pastor Wright to be President. Obama also had his children trained by Pastor Wright to understand that Israel is the source of all evil in the middle east.

Limbaugh is alienating voters with his biased rhetoric.
This assumes someone is actually listening to him who isn't already a "bought into" ditto-head.
I'm a libertarian-leaning independent who shares some positions with traditional conservatives (think Ron Paul), but I get physically ill if I have to be exposed to Limbaugh's rants.

An illustration of that gap came just two weeks ago, when Palin’s church, the Wasilla Bible Church, gave its pulpit over to a figure viewed with deep hostility by many Jewish organizations: David Brickner, the executive director of Jews for Jesus.
Palin’s pastor, Larry Kroon, introduced Brickner on Aug. 17, according to a transcript of the sermon on the church’s website.
“He’s a leader of Jews for Jesus, a ministry that is out on the leading edge in a pressing, demanding area of witnessing and evangelism,” Kroon said.
Brickner then explained that Jesus and his disciples were themselves Jewish.
“The Jewish community, in particular, has a difficult time understanding this reality,” he said.
Brickner’s mission has drawn wide criticism from the organized Jewish community, and the Anti-Defamation League accused them in a report of “targeting Jews for conversion with subterfuge and deception.”
Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.

Well, I dont know what sites you peruse, but Rushs bias is reproduced on many sites that many 'bought into' folks dont read. His bias works to alienate folks, like yourself, that dont buy into his views.

Newsweek points out that it's disingenuous for Obama to tie Limbaugh to McCain on this issue, if not a downright falsehood.
As they report on their website's article:
The main problem here is that tying McCain to Limbaugh--especially on immigration reform--is deeply unfair. It's not just that McCain broke with his party and nearly torpedoed his presidential bid by co-sponsoring last year's failed comprehensive reform bill at the same time Limbaugh was regularly lambasting immigration reform and expressing hostility toward illegal immigrants on the air. It's that Limbaugh actually opposed McCain's candidacy because of his stance on immigration.

Sarah, I have no idea where you get the info on how Obama educates his 7yr. old on Israel. You must not have either children or a brain.

Wow- the networks should just cancel all of the day time soaps and bring us updates like this.
Thanks Limbaugh for putting those quotes in perspective...it makes so more, um, sense.
Sarah, make sure when you're out in the world reporting on where the Obama family has been "prep" (oh, did you mean prepped? That would at least make grammatical sense.) be sure to say it with a flashlight under your face and preferably around a campfire for maximum scariness.

Great post, Jonathan. Talk about open mouth, insert foot. Of course, Rush gambles on pleasing like minds so he probably doesn't really care if he failed to disarm the ad.

Talk about xenophobic. Israel promotes NOT a vision of a inclusive "multi-cultural," "multi-ethnic" society (like we do in America) for Israel, but instead a racist exclusionary "Jewish state." It is racist because a Jew is defined as coming from a Jewish mother(genes). That state is openly dedicated to the advancement of the Jewish religion, culture, and even the genetic preservation of the Jewish people. Israel uses racial profiling. Israel values Judaism above other religions. Israel should seek to be welcoming and inclusive and respect all religions, or even those with no religion.
Israeli ethnocentric, chauvinism and xenophobic values are just too extreme. Israel does not share American values and let us therefore not share American taxpayer money with them. Israel needs to advance to the 21st century in its values. The days of racism should be a thing of the past. Israeli society is where America's society was 100 years ago. Israel can do better. Let us have that as our goal to advance Israel to the 21st century in the field of civil rights.

Stein and most of the commentators here are missing a crucial aspect of the realpolitik at play . Limbaugh plays a role that's designed to stir up friction between different groups,in support of the divide and conquer strategy of the. power game He's extremely skillull at performing this function,as evidenced by the strong reactions he gets on the left, which of course fit in with the program. He pushes buttons ,and then says to his target audience 'see didn't I tell you that's how liberals would react, trust me I know how these things work. Yes it's demagoguery ,and it works. Reacting negatively to Limbaugh personally reinforces his influnece.

We Mexicans don't listen to Rush, so we don't care. McCain with Kennedy supported immigration reform last year. Some Democrats and many Republicans voted against it. Obama wasted his money on this commercial. In Los Angeles, we know the situation. In California, we understand the situation. We are not voting for Obama.

I think of Al Franken's book: "Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot!" and am reminded how true that is every time I hear someone listening to him. That man is pathetic with a capital "P".
His motto is: "It's only illegal and deserves punishment when someone else does it. It's okay for Rush to break the law and be just fine."
There endeth the moral high-ground of the Rush Limbaugh Oxycontin-heads of the world.
