Biden Aggressively Defends Upper Class Tax Raise

From the department of you-don't-see-that-everyday, here's a politician running for national office willing to stick to his guns on a tax raise:

Katie Couric: Your vice presidential rival, Governor Palin, said "To the rest of America, that's not patriotism. Raising taxes is about killing jobs and hurting small businesses and making things worse."
Joe Biden: How many small businessmen are making one million, four hundred thousand—average in the top 1 percent. Give me a break. I remind my friend, John McCain, what he said—when Bush called for war and tax cuts—he said, it was immoral, immoral, to take a nation to war and not have anybody pay for it. I am so sick and tired of this phoniness. The truth of the matter is that we are in trouble. And the people who do not need a new tax cut should be willing, as patriotic Americans, to understand the way to get this economy back up on their feet is to give middle class taxpayers a break. We take the tax cut they're getting and we give it to the middle class.

Points for courage, certainly. More on the taxes-as-patriotism line from Jonathan Cohn.

Glad to see him saying this, and being forceful about it. This is a situation where his blowhardiness is a boon :)

Almost 100 years ago the we amended the Constitution to allow federal government to collect taxes on our income.

A lot of people supported the passage because the government was promising that income tax would only be collected from the wealthiest of Americans, and even then, it would never go beyond single-digit percentages.

I think we all know what really happened. And anyone who has read the 16th Amendment would recognize that nothing of what they were promising at the time was actually codified in the amendment itself.

But hey, we can support this, because it'll never be us who's going to see our taxes increased. Just like it wasn't us in 1913. And today's politicians always keep the promises they make during election campaigns.

Here..., let me help you get that noose around my neck...
Me? Worried? Heck no! He promised he wouldn't pull it too tight!

Give 'em hell, Joe!

Also, a group of volunteers just launched a site that puts volunteers who want to travel to swing states in touch with financial sponsors and swing state host families, and allows the sponsor to track the progress and on-the-ground numbers of the volunteer they've sponsored.

It’s sort of a political hybrid of Craig's List and Team-in-Training and a pretty cool concept - check it out here: http://ObamaTravel.org/

Funny how people like Bernard Rappoport and Warren Buffet don't complain about paying progressive tax to support the nation that made them rich. Ah, but they actually serve causes greater than themselves. Sound familiar? All the stats I've read prove that tax cuts for the rich actually hurt the overall economy and the economy thrives when taxes on the rich are raised. You can look it up, as Casey Stengel said.
Funny how the ones who beat their chests so hard actually resent supporting America. Some give their lives, but the overcompensated won't give 40%!

Biden is stupid as a politician. This is not the way to get elected. First get elected, then up the taxes on your campaign contributors. The Party gets much money from lawyers, entertainment business(Hollywood), and Wall Street firms(but not recently since many have died).

Joe said it..and I would love to see it.
There is so much talk of how America isnt ready for a man of color to be president..I don't care who is president as long as they can convince the rest of the people up on capitol hill to let me keep some more of my money.
Makes me think back to the day Barack introduced Joe. "Ladies and gentlemen, the next presi...vice president of the united states" . Now was that nearly a slip up..or will America get 2 for the money if they vote for the Dems? Just asking.

I am very confused about Biden... Joe says he's for the little guys, and rich guys should fork out money for more tax... but he makes millions, then he try to pretend that he rides crowded train for commuting in "Amtrack" commuters line. "Amtrack" commuter line is called Accela, high speed train in which all seats are bigger than first class airplane and cost about twice as much as usual commuter airline fee (Check Accela web for fees FYI). Then he gives about $3000 for charity past three years while making more than 2 millions. That's about $900 a year. My charity one months is about $400 (church) + $300 (long term support for out of country organization working for poor) and + $100 (for local college student organization). I make $132K a year with two kids and married. I am very confused about What Joe says and How he lives his life...

You are confusing liberal intent with liberal action.
All that is required for liberals is to have the correct intentions and attitudes. Results are inconvienent truths for them. The New Harmony Colony had all the right intentions. Didn't work though. But is fondly remembered as a great progressive step forward. Just like 90% marginal tax rates.

So I don't know what Joe plans as far as taxes go, but I would not mind paying my 3000 some odd dollars to bail out the mortgage giants, if they would stop taking so much from me. Kind of like Wimpy from the Popeye cartoon...I would be more than glad to give them 3000 on Tuesday if they would give me my earnings today.
