Could be. WHAT exactly does a "community organizer" do? Barack Obama's rise has left many Americans asking themselves that question. Here's a big part of the answer: Community organizers intimidate banks into making high-risk loans to customers with poor credit.
In the name of fairness to minorities, community organizers occupy private offices, chant inside bank lobbies, and confront executives at their homes - and thereby force financial institutions to direct hundreds of millions of dollars in mortgages to low-credit customers.
In other words, community organizers help to undermine the US economy by pushing the banking system into a sinkhole of bad loans. And Obama has spent years training and funding the organizers who do it.
THE seeds of today's financial meltdown lie in the Commu nity Reinvestment Act - a law passed in 1977 and made riskier by unwise amendments and regulatory rulings in later decades.
CRA was meant to encourage banks to make loans to high-risk borrowers, often minorities living in unstable neighborhoods. That has provided an opening to radical groups like ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) to abuse the law by forcing banks to make hundreds of millions of dollars in "subprime" loans to often uncreditworthy poor and minority customers.
Any bank that wants to expand or merge with another has to show it has complied with CRA - and approval can be held up by complaints filed by groups like ACORN.
In fact, intimidation tactics, public charges of racism and threats to use CRA to block business expansion have enabled ACORN to extract hundreds of millions of dollars in loans and contributions from America's financial institutions.
Banks already overexposed by these shaky loans were pushed still further in the wrong direction when government-sponsored Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began buying up their bad loans and offering them for sale on world markets.
Fannie and Freddie acted in response to Clinton administration pressure to boost homeownership rates among minorities and the poor. However compassionate the motive, the result of this systematic disregard for normal credit standards has been financial disaster.
ONE key pioneer of ACORN's subprime-loan shakedown racket was Madeline Talbott - an activist with extensive ties to Barack Obama. She was also in on the ground floor of the disastrous turn in Fannie Mae's mortgage policies.
Long the director of Chicago ACORN, Talbott is a specialist in "direct action" - organizers' term for their militant tactics of intimidation and disruption. Perhaps her most famous stunt was leading a group of ACORN protesters breaking into a meeting of the Chicago City Council to push for a "living wage" law, shouting in defiance as she was arrested for mob action and disorderly conduct. But her real legacy may be her drive to push banks into making risky mortgage loans.
In February 1990, Illinois regulators held what was believed to be the first-ever state hearing to consider blocking a thrift merger for lack of compliance with CRA. The challenge was filed by ACORN, led by Talbott. Officials of Bell Federal Savings and Loan Association, her target, complained that ACORN pressure was undermining its ability to meet strict financial requirements it was obligated to uphold and protested being boxed into an "affirmative-action lending policy." The following years saw Talbott featured in dozens of news stories about pressuring banks into higher-risk minority loans.
IN April 1992, Talbott filed an other precedent-setting com plaint using the "community support requirements" of the 1989 savings-and-loan bailout, this time against Avondale Federal Bank for Savings. Within a month, Chicago ACORN had organized its first "bank fair" at Malcolm X College and found 16 Chicago-area financial institutions willing to participate.
Two months later, aided by ACORN organizer Sandra Maxwell, Talbott announced plans to conduct demonstrations in the lobbies of area banks that refused to attend an ACORN-sponsored national bank "summit" in New York. She insisted that banks show a commitment to minority lending by lowering their standards on downpayments and underwriting - for example, by overlooking bad credit histories.
By September 1992, The Chicago Tribune was describing Talbott's program as "affirma- tive-action lending" and ACORN was issuing fact sheets bragging about relaxations of credit standards that it had won on behalf of minorities.
And Talbott continued her effort to, as she put it, drag banks "kicking and screaming" into high-risk loans. A September 1993 story in The Chicago Sun-Times presents her as the leader of an initiative in which five area financial institutions (including two of her former targets, now plainly cowed - Bell Federal Savings and Avondale Federal Savings) were "participating in a $55 million national pilot program with affordable-housing group ACORN to make mortgages for low- and moderate-income people with troubled credit histories."
What made this program different from others, the paper added, was the participation of Fannie Mae - which had agreed to buy up the loans. "If this pilot program works," crowed Talbott, "it will send a message to the lending community that it's OK to make these kind of loans."
Well, the pilot program "worked," and Fannie Mae's message that risky loans to minorities were "OK" was sent. The rest is financial-meltdown history.
IT would be tough to find an "on the ground" community organizer more closely tied to the subprime-mortgage fiasco than Madeline Talbott. And no one has been more supportive of Madeline Talbott than Barack Obama.
When Obama was just a budding community organizer in Chicago, Talbott was so impressed that she asked him to train her personal staff.
He returned to Chicago in the early '90s, just as Talbott was starting her pressure campaign on local banks. Chicago ACORN sought out Obama's legal services for a "motor voter" case and partnered with him on his 1992 "Project VOTE" registration drive.
In those years, he also conducted leadership-training seminars for ACORN's up-and-coming organizers. That is, Obama was training the army of ACORN organizers who participated in Madeline Talbott's drive against Chicago's banks.
More than that, Obama was funding them. As he rose to a leadership role at Chicago's Woods Fund, he became the most powerful voice on the foundation's board for supporting ACORN and other community organizers. In 1995, the Woods Fund substantially expanded its funding of community organizers - and Obama chaired the committee that urged and managed the shift.
That committee's report on strategies for funding groups like ACORN features all the key names in Obama's organizer network. The report quotes Talbott more than any other figure; Sandra Maxwell, Talbott's ACORN ally in the bank battle, was also among the organizers consulted.
MORE, the Obama-supervised Woods Fund report ac knowledges the problem of getting donors and foundations to contribute to radical groups like ACORN - whose confrontational tactics often scare off even liberal donors and foundations.
Indeed, the report brags about pulling the wool over the public's eye. The Woods Fund's claim to be "nonideological," it says, has "enabled the Trustees to make grants to organizations that use confrontational tactics against the business and government 'establishments' without undue risk of being criticized for partisanship."
Hmm. Radicalism disguised by a claim to be postideological. Sound familiar?
The Woods Fund report makes it clear Obama was fully aware of the intimidation tactics used by ACORN's Madeline Talbott in her pioneering efforts to force banks to suspend their usual credit standards. Yet he supported Talbott in every conceivable way. He trained her personal staff and other aspiring ACORN leaders, he consulted with her extensively, and he arranged a major boost in foundation funding for her efforts.
And, as the leader of another charity, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Obama channeled more funding Talbott's way - ostensibly for education projects but surely supportive of ACORN's overall efforts.
In return, Talbott proudly announced her support of Obama's first campaign for state Senate, saying, "We accept and respect him as a kindred spirit, a fellow organizer."
IN short, to understand the roots of the subprime-mort gage crisis, look to ACORN's Madeline Talbott. And to see how Talbott was able to work her mischief, look to Barack Obama.
Then you'll truly know what community organizers do.

This article made me laugh and reminded me of an elderly relative from Charleston, SC. when Clinton was President. She was Catholic and conservative republican who often referred to Clinton as the anti-christ. I thought her view of Clinton was amusing, especially since she seemed to believe it to be true. This post by Stanley may have some accurate history but the analysis and conclusions are utter bull. Actually CRA banks have a far lower default ratio than institutions not subject to it's requirements.

The present crisis is directly due to the Republicans rampant deregulation of banking and securities. I sadly must include Bill Clinton among these Republicans. Since he allowed some of this Phil Gram deregulatory clap trap to pass.

We saw the same thing on smaller scales with the S&L collapse following deregulation and with Enron following energy deregulation. One would think that this highly predictable cycle of deregulate and collapse would teach our policy makers something. But sadly no, so far the mistakes just keep getting bigger and now the right is trying to blame activists in essentially a racist smear.

Look to greed usury and fraud in the sale of wildly unfair and even effectively unrepayable mortgages that inflated this bubble. Since banks and brokers were selling off the loan papers, they didn't need to care if it could ever be repaid. Deceptively marketed and disproportionately aimed at minorities these horrid frauds were not the fault of community organizers that simply tried to keep money flowing within distressed communities. And it is deeply shameful that anyone would say so.

I'd be really interested to know whether or not he used his *private* email or his job-related government email to send out this drivel. As well as when he sent it, during work hours, or ??? I'm reading that book right now. It's about fairness in lending. AND about predatory lenders who want to shift the blame onto those who got loans and were not told that they only barely qualified for loans they couldn't ever hope to pay for, especially were there to be extreme Repub 'spend and borrow' tactics.

The name/job description, "community organizer," is a northern term for a (church) "outreach minister/coordinator" which is a southern term.

Up north the impoverished live in the inner city. In the south (with the exception of large southern cities) the impoverished live in the country.

Thus the community organizer/outreach minister have slightly different tasks, but their overall goal is the same: to improve life for those who need the assistance.

For instance: I taught community college students in a southern rural community how to organize so they could petition to get a dirt county road paved so that the school bus could come get their children. My church outreach minister knew of an elderly lady who needed a new roof and arranged for volunteers to fix it.

We both are communtiy organizers. I am sure that there are some who are scurrilous although I have not met any. And I am sorry that the surrilous ones have sullied the job title of outreach/community organizer.

As far as I am concerned, being a community organizer encouraging people to become self-empowered and/or watching people grow, is the most rewarding work I have ever done.

Frankly, it is the same work that the Peace Corps does in other countries.

Some in our family (all Catholics) also wonder if Obama is the antichrist. That is until I remind them that many of their friends in the south also once claimed the Pope was the antichrist. And wasn't their friend Rev.Hagee alluding to the same thing.

Nothing personal,but here's the truth:The CRA(Community Reinvestment Act)was made a law because banks weren't serving the area that their charter said they were serving.That law,coupled with another one(The Home Mortgage Disclosure Act) went a long way to prevent fraud in lending.For instance,my community found banks and thrifts whose charters said that they were obligated to serve did little or no lending in its geographical area.A local HFC(Household Finance Corporation) branch chartered to serve a low to middle class neighborhood gave $800 million dollars in loans out of their service area.The area that,by law,they were there to address its"unmet needs"received less than $8 million in loans.
Banks and S&Ls were refusing to invest in communities and individuals by zip codes,no matter how good their credit was or how much risk was reduced by their collateral.The lending institutions had maps with certain areas circled with a red boundary.The practice was so widespread it's name in the financial back rooms was called "redlining."They partitioned the regulatory agencies to get a charter based on things like the areas being under-served,but after setting up shop in the aforementioned neighborhood,they went back to redlining and dis-investing.
The neighborhood and its leaders,including community organizers asked the banks and thrifts for their lists of loans.Almost all of the banks were deficient,according to their CRA and HMDA records.Their actions were discriminatory,racist and directly ignored their charters.these policies were deadly.Legitimate,established minority business persons and others caught in their web of denial couldn't expand or renovate because they couldn't get the finances.I'll never forget the faces of those who were turned away from the lending institutions.They were broken,disillusioned,shell of a man,denied the American Dream! A domino effect kicked in,literally.For want of finances,there were no jobs for neighborhood contractors.The kid who wasn't hired turned to other means,some criminal,to make ends meet.The unemployed had to leave the neighborhood because the small businesses weren't hiring.The mom-and-pop stores were unable to stock the variety of items that could be found in the suburban big-box store.Customers bypassed them to save a penny or two.And the minority middle class in the community dies a slow death.The moneyed deciders and deniers strangled the life out of the areas they were,by law,supposed to served.When the last domino falls,please turn out the lights??
Not so fast,said the community!Their anger turned to resolve,and,suddenly those charters were in dispute.Lawsuits were filed and won.Residents were fed up with the benign neglect of their community.They saw that"justice deferred is justice denied".Their success spread to other disenfranchised neighborhoods all over the USA and a coalition of grass root,non profit organizations rallied and lobbied for stricter oversight of these dishonest,criminal lenders.Sure,they picketed!Sure the held sit-ins!Sure,they made the lenders accountable,sure,they were intimidating,but they had a right to protest the strangling of their lifeline,their community's livelyhood and they had a right to protest.When he scorns the actions of people who are Americans,this scorn is really directed at the Constitutional rights of us all.I think we all should read the life of this magazine's namesake,Mother Jones.While you're at it,google her name.After that you won't be so ignorant as to demean a community organizer.The signers of the Declaration of Independence were community organizers,too!
Saying that the banks were bullied by ACORN and other community-based organizations to give loans to people who didn't qualify for loans?There was no bullying involved on their part!There was no"affirmative action set-asides!"No Quotas,just a demand to be treated fairly and follow their charters.In fact,communities held workshops for potential home buyers that bankers and S&L execs were on the speakers panel and/or chaired sub groups at these meetings.Out of these workshops came a pool of qualified borrowers.There was no coercion necessary,they were shown what they needed to responsibly manage their side of the lending agreement.Another part of the two laws is that the lenders will have to tell the applicant why he was denied a loan,and those workshops helped cut the b**l s**t and intimidation factor out when they sat face-to-face with the loan officer.
In spite of all this effort on the community's part,these vampires still had to continue sucking the life blood out of the process of finance with the help of an Administration that said regulation was bad for the economy.The markets should be free,free as in NO accountability.That mind set of the cult called capitalism has the economy of our country in dire straits.As George W tried to say:"Fool me once,shame on you.Fool me twice,shame on me!"

We do have the spirit of Babylon rising in our own country, and the foundations were being built long before 2008’s election.

The public is not challenging the salaries of Police and firemen unions. These organizations are not needed in our society. Yet they have taken control of New York City, California and many other cities and states. These government unions are masking their use of public employees in an organized effort to grow government and remove local control of government. Unions were originally created to help private sector employees and were never intended for gaining government power.

The Soviet Union was another massive government workers union! Our city government located in my town is entirely unionized, they represent a left wing voter block that we cannot remove in the election process. Arnold the governator tried to break California's public employees unions power and quickly learned that they were strong enough to terminate him. When will the people in this nation see these trends? Our schools are unionized, and controlled by the left, and have educated a generation of kids who feel perfectly at home with socialism.

I have spent years writing a book to re-educate people by waking them up to the fact that we are supporting a state growing within a state, and it has formed deep roots within our most trusted institutions. This government power and abuse are a twin prophecy connected to the 3 Hebrews who were forced to fall down and either worship the golden statue erected by the state of Babylon, or die in the fire. (Daniel Chapter 3) The Idol we must bow and worship today is political correctness! If we do not do this we may be fired, or destroyed by character assassinations directed by the Babylon media. If you do not fall down and worship the image of the beast you must be destroyed. (Daniel 3) That is how they sought to destroy Sarah Palin and George W. Bush, even though Bush desperately tried to stop Freddie and Fannie 7 times.

The time has come where we cannot buy nor sell, nor have employment without our tax money being used to build this modern Babylon. They are literally building a political God of gold by taking our own money, robbing our own job. They are ignoring sound principles and offering us as sacrifices to appease their angry god.

We are like cattle (property) being lead by those we have elected to the slaughter. Our thoughts are that these people are honest humans who intend to take care of us. We are being lulled into slavery by the beast of Babylon. And they have us paying for the transportation to the train station, the ticket for the journey, and all the failing plans of scheme. They are empowering their status by allowing us to think all is well as we become enslaved to build their palaces with our sweat and money! They are actually Beastly men who have sold out their own humanity. Everybody is anxiously looking for the mark of the beast while we are being marked by the Beast through our service in Babylon with our own right hand. The mark in the forehead is not a computer chip, like Christians imagine. It is a mark of deception brainwashed into their minds, or foreheads. When did John the Revelator ever say that this prophecy was to be a marked tatto placed on the forehead? He specifically said it was a mark placed "into peoples foreheads". the forehead in the context of scripture represents peoples intellects, and their individual thought processes. A computer chip cannot possibly force a person to go to hell! It is the selling their minds and souls to Satan becoming marked through their personal choice to follow evil.

Look how people just voted with their right hands! What kind of Beast has entered their brains? Is it not the mark of the beast implanted into their thought processes by the media? This deception causes people to sell out their own freedom! Peoples’ right hands voted for slavery in Babylon. Your right hand is the work hand! By their own will people in fear sacrifice their freedom thinking they are accomplishing a greater good. The poor are being used to justify this mass robbery done through slave taxation. Our education systems, and our health care are to become the final foundation to construct the monsters idol. Poor people become the image of the golden idol. The money Idol in which the beast hides himself behind, in order to hide the fact that our sacrifices are not for the poor after all, but actually for the beasts own glory. The poor are just pawns, and will soon become slaves to this modern Babylon after their plight is used.

I have great hope that this failing economy will not respond to Babylon’s social fixes, and things may get much worse. Christians do not comprehend what the mark of the beast is! This makes it easier for them to also be enslaved by spiritual ignorance. They think a tattoo is coming that will be placed upon their head. This blinds them from seeing the true mark! They misplace the Bible's true meaning of the real mark. Did anyone ever notice that John the revelator clearly stated the mark would be imposed "in the forehead" and not placed on the forehead?? The forehead represents mans intellect. His mind, and thought processes being influenced by either good or evil.

The mark is spiritual, and not literal! There were not any computer chips present when Cain was marked in ancient times! The number 666 is the measurement of Nebuchadnezzar’s golden idol. The mark of the historical calendar for the Babylon system, was 600 BC. Sixty cubits high and six cubits wide. See Daniel Chapter Three verse one. Therein resides the meaning of 666. Herein is depicted Babylon’s beastly slavery as recorded in your own Bible. How did so many miss this? The measurements are written in the Bible.

I am still getting frightened e-mails from lots of Christians who believe that the anti-christ has just come to power. Millions of these people have been taught wrong meanings for the "Beast of Babylon" from self serving preachers who do not understand, nor can they properly identify this enemy within correct Bible context. Suddenly after the election millions of these people are confused and lost, not knowing where to turn for spiritual understanding! The evil one wants to destroy America. America protects Israel.

The enemy wants to remove our presence in the Middle East. This is why Sarah Palin and others supporting victory in Iraq must prepare to lead America after they learn hard lessons. Perhaps I can help re-educate willing minds when they begin to feel the hard times.. I believe God will even give ignorant people another chance. He will attempt to teach them something before he resorts to his final judgments.

I am trying to be of some positive assistance, even though I am not a writer, and require another author to help me articulate and promote my book. Help me to reach thousands of frightened and confused Christians, who do not understand what prophecies are happening, or where they can go to find the correct biblical information, to change it.
