McCain's John Lewis Flip-Flop
Remember when John McCain said that one of the three "wisest people" he would "rely heavily on" in his administration was Democratic Congressman and civil rights legend John Lewis?
That seems unlikely nowadays, given that Lewis is accusing McCain of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division" a la George Wallace, and McCain is charging Lewis with "a brazen and baseless attack on my character." It's going to be awkward when they cross paths in the Capitol cafeteria...
* Headline changed for clarity.
Comments
Why is the header "John Lewis Flip Flop"? Lewis made his comments and has not changed them. If anything, it should say McCain flip flop. This is egregiously misleading and dismaying that it's on the Mother Jones site. Or have I missed somthing?
Hi Tricia,
The headline is supposed to indicate that it is a flip-flop ABOUT John Lewis, not BY John Lewis. I'll change for clarity's safe.

Oh Jon. Bless your little heart. You're calling it a flip flop because you made the assumption that JMac would actually seek out John Lewis for his advice...since he has done it so many times in the past, especially at the height of the MLK holiday controversy. What? He didn't? You don't say.
JMac invoking John Lewis was the equivalent of someone bringing up their new Black friend, that they only waved to on occasion, to get cool points with the in crowd. However, this time, it isn't a desperate teenager doing it, it is man that has clung so tightly to the "honor" mantle that he can't see that he has lost his.
