Campaign Chic
As if a massive advantage in fundraising and media access were not daunting enough for George W. Bush's presidential rivals, he also has the edge in fashion, in the form of smartly designed merchandise. Spalding Group, a provider of "campaign marketing solutions exclusively to Republican candidates," has created several lines of clothing for Bush's campaign, each geared to a distinct Republican demographic. Hence the "Go West" line, featuring pricey Western wear for that weekend oil-executive look; "Interstate W'04" for the NASCAR crowd; and the chic black "W the President" line, whose wearers wouldnt look out of place in W,the hotel.
But if you want to show your allegiance to a Democratic candidate, your fashion pickings are slim--hardly surprising given that at this stage of the campaign, the candidates are more focused on finding supporters than dressing them. Sure, the Howard Dean blue-collar lunch box has the cheeky charm of the man himself, but for the most part, youll be stuck in T-shirts and baseball caps--all union-made, of course.
