The cultural walls that divide the global village are crumbling, enabling girls in developing countries to conceive of futures unimaginable to their mothers. In the Ethiopian village of Moulo, 10-year-old Zelalem Abera, the niece of Zenebu Tulu, pictures herself as a doctor. Despite the dissonance between such dreams and what is available to women in poor nations, the fact that a young girl can imagine controlling her own future is itself progress.
Q: Can women do everything men can do?
Abera: Men are stronger than women, I believe.
Q: What does your mother do?
Abera: She makes coffee. She makes injera and wat. She goes to market. She collects firewood. She fetches water. Pounds some cereals. She washes clothes.
Q: She sounds like she is a verY strong woman to do all this work. Is she not as strong as your father?
Abera: My father makes pans, which she cannot do, for example. He can chop wood, which my mother cannot sometimes do. He plows and my mother doesn't.
Q: What are the jobs that your mother can do that your father cannot do?
Abera: My mother is responsible only in the house.
Q: Why is it important for a girl to go to school?
Abera: To be educated and to live well.
Q: Do you want to have a job when you are big?
Abera: Yes, I want to be a doctor.
Q: Have you met a doctor before?
Abera: No.
Q: What does a doctor do?
Abera: He treats patients.
Q: And what kind of sicknesses do you want to help people with?
Abera: If somebody has a stomachache, I'll gIve some medicines. If somebody has a headache, I'll give some medical drugs for headache.
Q: And where will you live?
Abera: I want to live in Addis. I like Addis.
Q: Do you want to have a husband and children when you grow up?
Abera: No. I don't want to get married. I don't want to have children.
Q: If you go to Addis, become a doctor, and do not have a husband and children, will you live alone and take care of yourself?
Abera: Yes, I can live without children and a husband.

I'm a second year pre-med student in Puerto Rico, I'm studying to be a pediatrician and trust me, being a doctor is not about the money, it's about the desire to help others in need. I only can tell you guys that to become a doctor you need to study a lot and be passionate about it, good grades are very important, even during high school. It can be really hard at some point but you can't give up, cause at the end it would be worth it, trust me on this.So yeah, just follow your dreams, study hard and don't let anyone stop you.

I want to be doctor because I have this overwhelmingly huge passion and desire to be one. I know what it takes to be doctor because my dad is a pediatrician and my mom is a psychiatrist. It takes up your entire life but I want to do it!

It is great that you already know you want to be a doctor. The best thing for you to do at this point in time is to build your self confidence and make good life choices. You must have strong math and science skills to accomplish your goal as well. Start reading small magazine articles at your local library about different medical topics. Most importantly, you must stay focused on anything you want to do in your life and not listen to anyone tell you you can’t be what you want to be. Good Luck!!

To be a doctor...you need to study a lot, read a lot, take lots of science classes like chemistry,(Especially), biology,english,phyiscs, and anatomy and physilogy. Also, you need to get into a good college..get a bachelors degree, masters degree, and doctorate degree, go to medical school, and go in resident in peditrics and you will become a doctor, its not easy.

nice story ,I want to be a doctor too, I really was touched with how the doctors life looks like I don't mean having lots of money I mean getting a chance to meet many kinds of people who carries many different illnesses and thanking god for being able to help them and having good health its really a job that never stop on one point but it can let us learn daily . I'm on my last year in high school and I know being a doctor may take 10 years and even though many of my friends tried to change me mind but I guess this is where I find my self so I'm gonna fight till I be one =)

in my opinion,,being a dr is not something that always 'make' money...it's all about satisfaction and satisfaction and again...satisfaction...being a dr is way 2 hard bt ppl still sacrifies their life as they stick 2 their believe...i want 2 b a dr and i will always want 2 b a dr~

I need to ask you guys something, am an egyptian and i've finished high school here in egypt and i didnt study chemistry or physics in high school, and now am in college studing english literature so after i finish the 4 years of the collage what can i do to study medicine coz i really wanna be a doctor, and i wanna study it in usa not here in egypt, so can any one please give me an answer??

Dina, To answer your question... it not as hard as you might think wanting to study in the US. Since you have a degree already all you need to do is take the prereqs for medschool. The prereqs are 1 year general chem, 1 year organic chem, 1 year of bio, 1 year of physics and labs for all. Once you finish those you take the mcat and apply.
