MOTHER JONES BY E-MAIL

Inside their 1860s farmhouse, Jean and Harlow prepare the final meal in the home they've shared for 35 years. Over the last 10 years, as Chicago's sprawl has continued to radiate out from the city, the Cagwins' Will County has seen the largest increase in the greater metropolitan area. The Cagwins are moving 60 miles southeast. Taking their share of the proceeds (Harlow has five siblings), they've bought a 325-acre grain farm. They built a new house; they'll lease the land to a younger farmer.

This is happening all over America. Once fertile farmland is covered with subdivisions, there's no chance it will ever be reclaimed. As small farms die, we grow more and more dependent on corporate farms. Does anyone care?
