"'Illegal immigrant'?" Dobbs said, with his wife, Debi, a former sportscaster who is herself of Hispanic origin and who refers to Dobbs as "Husband" — he calls her "Momma" — not far away. (In 2003, Debi was arrested after trying to board a plane at the Newark airport with a gun the Dobbses keep on their farm for protection.) "Do I need to say 'legal immigrant'? Do I need to put a modifier on that? Do I tell someone who's entered the country legally, 'You're a legal immigrant'?"

"No," said a short, dark man with a shaven head and a goatee. "You would refer to them as 'immigrants.' When you're trying to make the distinction between those who entered the country legally or illegally, then you use the modifier."

"Then I won't concede the point," Dobbs said. "It's not up to the individual to make the distinction to immigrate without the consent and authority of the United States government; therefore, if I say 'illegal immigrant' I'm working at cross-purposes."

As the conversation began to fade out, Regina Medina, a director of NAHJ and a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News, approached Dobbs, asking him if he'd consider handing over $1,000 for a membership in the group.

"You know I'm not Hispanic," Dobbs said. But when Medina assured him there were other members in the same position, Dobbs measured the situation. On record he deplores the existence of hyphenated Americans, going so far as to oppose staples of immigrant identity such as St. Patrick's Day. But while he would have gladly argued the linguistic merit of "illegal immigrant" for another four hours, saying no to this monetary gesture might have led to an even more heated argument about the existence of the NAHJ Itself. If anything, Dobbs has shown the uncanny ability to recognize the precise moment to get the hell out, and this was sure it. Knowing there was a car out front waiting to speed him and Debi away, Dobbs whispered into Medina's ear: No, he wouldn't take one membership. He'd take five.

Shaking his head over the incident a few days later, Dobbs repeated to me, "Five of them."

Dobbs would go on the air that night, as he has been since his rebirth, a man alone. He would do so as a traitor to the corporate leaders and the free-market theorems that have influenced much of the modern conservative movement, but also as a man who finds no kindred spirits among liberals, who see a racist strain in his form of economic nationalism.

"The United States was once considered the greatest can-do country on the face of the earth," he told me, "but this insidious libertarianism suggests we can't change the educational system. We can't control our borders or our ports, but we can send men and women to Iraq to install democracy? When we don't have the wherewithal to preserve it here? Where is the reason? It's a failure of leadership. It's a failure of leadership in so many of our institutions. Someone said to me that the far right hates you and the far left fears you, and that's perfectly fine with me."

Having specific experience with the issues created by illegal immigration and globalization and being a rare combination of hard-core construction working class white guy who educated himself to the upper-middle class only to find globalization attacking me from the top down while illegal immigration squeezes from the bottom I am qualified to say you are full of crap to downplay what Lou Dobbs say's. I don't care if he is simply a creation of TV news. The notions he discusses are true and I am a pissedoffwhiteguy who is trying to figure out what to do about this issue. Republican & Democrats both art traitors to the white man.

U.S. corporations are of no value to the US and the general public if they don't create jobs or merely create jobs cheap labor foreigners only. They might as well leave and let new small business that employ citizens fill the gap. We don't need foreigners to make america a success.

Our borders need to be rock solid with guests coming and going with complete control by our nations government. Americans are generous and will help good and honest people. We even give food and water to our enemies. Kill our citizens and we will bring you to justice.

Seven years ago I was in the streets of Seattle - breathing tear gas and dodging rubber bullets at the WTO actions. And the truth of the matter is that Lou Dobbs stands much closer to my beliefs than the so-called "Progressives" of this country. Such a big part of the progressive agenda is a thinly-veiled anti-White racism that I, as a white person, simply could not ignore. While I agree that Dobbs show can hardly be called "news," the truth of the matter is that he is RIGHT. Dobbs understands that the real way to help the poor is to help them at home, and it is not smart to simply import massive amounts of poverty into the USA just for the sake of being able to yell "look, we're not racists! We'll even commit suicide if it'll convince you that we're not racists!"

I am a tax paying citizen in Sevierville, TN. Our small painting and contracting business was going great, until we noticed that all the new construction was being done by companies that employed illegal aliens. We are one of the largest tourist towns in the nation. Home of Dollywood! Gatlinburg is a safe haven for illegal aliens. They freely walk through our town and look down their noses, like we shouldn't try to compete with them for employment. Everyday, we see another small business front shut their doors, yet the 10 Mexican stores are crowded inside and out all day and night. Now, tell me if this is the American way, or are they getting unfair advantages and trying to bully us into turning our Apple pie into burrito supremes. I don't want my child to be exposed to diseases that they have had their shots for, just because the government can't get their heads out of their asses long enough to stand up and say, the jobs that the big corporations haven't outsoursed belong to us! Wake-up America, this isn't racism this is survival.

First of all the illegal immigration issue was created by the illegal invasion of this continant by the europeans who used genocide to decrease the number of indiginous people. After that the indiginous were stripped of their culture, language, and spirituallity. Those left alive were forced into poverty, and religated to low class citizins,on reservations or third world countries, who today have to emmigrate to feed their families. This creation of third world countries below our southeren border is the product of euroamerican Imperialism. The forced plunder of cultural, and natural resorces and the creation of arbirtary borders for our convenence, with utter disregard for the indiginous people, which continues to this day,are the causes for the surge in migration from these poor third world nations to our so called developed nation. First world greed ,coupled with the inability of third world countries to govern themselves effectivaly, and the need for cheep labor (skilled or unskilled) in an aging first world population will alwayse promote migration to developed nations. Many people think the "FAIR & BALANCED" misinformation news ,who blast their anti-mexican subliminal hatred on 24/7 radio and T.V.do it because they care about "The Middle Class Working Men and Women". Ha! HA! These talking heads, or rather demonizing, ranting, raving frothing-at-the-mouth heads do it for ratings. It dosent matter if they distort, lie, misinform,or morph into neo-nazis before our very eyes and ears,.....as long as they get high ratings, and sell there sponsors products.

Lou is an angry white man alright. He's going to kill any real open discussions and resolution to this illegal immigration problem. I am a big believer in securing the border and tracking illegals but I think it is foolish to paint these people as 'aliens' or subhuman as lou often do. He's a biggot and he's not my allied in my aim to secure the border create a tracking process to the illegals in this country. And btw, he's no jounalist and its a shame that he should be giving such a powerful podium to spread hate.

Lou Dobbs is the only reason I watch CNN. If yoy have time for only one news show, make it Lou. I totally agree with him on the immigration issue and he was at the forefront in exposing the flawed, ridiculous and dangerous Grand Compromise. He exposes government incompetence and stands for the American worker and the American citizen. I wish this man was president.

Yet more racist yammering, conspicuously bandying the term "White Man" as if that had a goddamn thing to do with anything. What race-baiting nonsense. You should be ashamed of yourselves. When my father worked in the coal mines, being in the UMWA meant being a Democrat, and being a Democrat meant you had someone to fight for you as a worker. No more. Now being a Democrat or a so-called liberal means that while languishing comfortably in one's own highly-paid job, one is called upon to hold forth in solidarity for the Mexican citizen for no other reason than their skin is brown. People like me who have seen illegal immigrants depress wages and benefits with my own two eyes, and who would rather preserve the ability of a Mexican-American citizen to scratch out a little piece of the American dream than to condone the brutal victimization of Mexican citizens doing the work for a fraction of the money are called racist. To solve this problem, we must repeal NAFTA, hold Mexico accountable for the well being of its own citizens, and throw employers violating the law into jail. Leave the poor immigrants alone and if the jobs dry up, they'll go home. But Americans have to be willing to pay what it's worth to have that fresh cabbage or to have their shrubs pruned, not take the Wal-Mart approach to labor at the continuing decline of the American middle class.

Lou is absolutely right. We are under a planed (by a monstrous coalition of corporations and commies) invasion, which lowers the standard of living of all of us. And if you add the racial and cultural component, against the Christian whites, you have the entire picture. We are in the fight of our lives for ourselves, our children, our culture, our Christian beliefs and our country.

Lou Dobbs is right! A local company here in Ft Pierce lost a lot of employees who were arrested with fake social security cards. I needed work so I went to apply. The only employee on site responded 'no english' when I asked where the boss was. so I asked 'donde esta el jeffe' the employee responded 'en su casa' and pointed at a house. I got no answer when I knocked so I left a note with my name and phone number explaining I needed work and had experience. I went home and phoned several times, and sent a fax. I never heard from the company despite the fact the owner complained about his workers being arrested and stated his business was hurt because he had a lot of work. The real problem is employers like him are not jailed. It is likely he would have considered my brother in law Mike Garcia (who speaks less Spanish than I do).

Lou Dobbs, when he was lambasting greedy corporations, was speaking truth to power (well, from within the confines of a powerful cable network). Bit I discover that he is, like so many comfortable, well-paid folks in this country, afriad of drywallers and roofers from Oaxaca. Maybe I'm naive--but I don't think so--maybe these "illegals" are a threat. But I don't feel threatened. And I'm a (mostly) white male from Tennessee. Look, capitalism is built on slavery. Most of the Mexicans and Cental Americans now here live quite abysmally. Why pick on them? I know why: So we don't look at how the wealthy (Come on, tell the WHOLE story)are gobbling up all the produced wealth in this country...and how the Rethuglicans are stealing the votes, especially the "wrong" votes cast by African Americans and, you guessed it, Hispanics. Sincerely, Dale Collins, Conway, SC

Lets face it, Lou Dobbs and all the other loud mouth ranters on fox and cnn are doing nothing but exploiting the so-called white man's anger. The white man doesn't really know who or what he is angry at, but look to Lou Dobbs because he'll tell you what you're angry about. Unfortuniately, Lou and the rest of them are not providing a public service out of the goodness of their hearts. All of their supposed anger generating is all too contrived. On the October 16th "show" Lou had a panel of guests discussing the NY driver's licenses proposal for undocumented mexicans. I found his "intro monologue" that was supposed to generate outrage to be quite unbelievable as he made his points to his panel of guests who all simply agreed and were outraged too. They were all outraged, as a matter of fact Lou must have used the word outraged and outrageous about 50 times within a five minute piece on these stupid driver's licenses. It was absolutely rediculous and ambarrassing to think that poor hardworking Americans who are seeing their way of life change drastically would actually buy in to Lou's over generated anger and CRAP. When Lou couldn't think of any other verbs or nouns or adjectives he kept using the same words over and over and over again. Outrage, outrageous and sometimes he would just repeat the word outrageous twice in a row! for lack of a more intelligent way of expressing (once again) anger. If the white man or anyone else for that matter believes that some tv guy like Lou or loudmouth like Glen, etc cares at all about you then you are wasting your time and beling fooled. Its just a show and Lou is just making a living. The world is definitely changing and it is up to Americans to learn to adapt to a changing economy and that doesn't mean starting a civil war. If that means continuing education, moving to another city, or even another country for work than everyone needs to open to doing their best to adapt. Unfortunately, I don't see Republicans nor Democrats ever really doing anything to focus on the immigration/border problem or for that matter ever really nuturing our home grown folks who are our foundation of this country and who have sacrificed and done the right things. We really don't have a unifying leader - our country is divided.

We are told by many that we need to outsource our jobs other countries and allow millions of third world immigrants (both legal and illegal) into the country to be able to Quote "compete in the global economy". Excuse me, but I need a little convincing before I agree that such drastic measures are a good idea. I do know that the rich are getting richer due to the cheap labor we are importing by the millions every year and the cheap goods from overseas that allow for ever higher profit margines. I know thta the far left is drooling over the prospect of tens of millions of poor people eventually voting for them to expand their socialist agenda I know this. What I don't know is if these changes are good for me. Is it really all inevitable? Is it really necessary for us to "compete in a glbal eceonomy"? I wonder. But I do not wonder who stands to gain the most. That is plainly obvious. In my opinion, open borders are being promoted by those who stand to gain the most and I believe they use charges such as "racist" and "xenophobe" to shut up anyone who dares to voice disagreement. Unfortuately, for the time being at least, it seems to be working. But it also seems to be less and less effective as time goes on.

If the United States owned the territory, why was it not called New Britain, New United States or some other non Mexican name? California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico are all Mexican names. You cannot change history. You can try to spin it but facts are facts!
Posted by:Juan ValdezDecember 8, 2007 8:40:29 AMRespond ^
The etymology of state names such as Arizona are rooted to the indigenous peoples of a continent, NOT country, such as O'odham and dialects such as Gigimia, dating back to Aztec amongst others. Just because a country utilizes dialect into their language is no more proof of ownership than stolen cultural nuisances. The "glasshouse" remark stays true as I suggest you take your own advice and learn history without ANY nationalistic spin on it. You ARE aware there was history prior to Mexico, and a people that lived and died with it? But we digress, as the proverbial skin of history can be peeled back further to reveal the original inhabitants different from the current occupants. Bottom-line, all countries reserve the right to restrict movement in and out of their borders and so should the US. Are we the original occupants of the land? No, but so what; Ask the same question of Mexico and get the same identical answer. Peace

America has to have a common sense approach to immigration, that simple. Every country in the world has far more restrictive policies than the US. Examine your own history before you start preaching to us. The US also leads the PLANET in providing care for the poor! I never hear one word of it and all we get is grief. Stop sending our money to these same people who complain about us. They don't know it now cuz it has never been taken away from them. I say if a country wants our help they should publicly seek assistance and only then does our congress act on it. People of the world will then begin to notice how much and how often we support this planet. Our money and help is pouring out and never a word on it here or anywhere. Update our immigration policies and update our humantarian assistance policies. The world has counted on us for so long we are taken for granted.

Are you kidding? The undocumented immigrants coming to the United States are the poor. On the one hand, you say that you are providing care and sending money to the poor. On the other, you are trying to deport the poor. You cannot have it both ways. All they want to do is work to provide for their family.
Posted by:JusticeFebruary 17, 2008 1:53:10 PMRespond ^
OK, this is getting funny. Do you have any idea the amount of money and time through social services this country spends on the poor, including immigrants? I can tell you do not and I can also tell you have no desire to find out. How much in terms of money, food, health care, housing, and the list goes on did our country supply the world last year? How about the this decade or century? Yea, I know we should, but it would be nice to actually have that fact recognized by people like you. Your on the internet right now, Google it and do a comparative analysis. You can do it >Knowledge is key!
Posted by:TamFebruary 17, 2008 4:04:17 PMRespond ^
When your family first came to the United States they were probably poor. Did anybody deport them because they were a burden? So why should you complain now? Here I did some research on the internet for you. Yes, knowledge is key ! http://www.associatedcontent.c om/article/464357/benefits_of_ illegal_immigration_offset.html

You cannot be serious, right? You try to provide one link from a pro-Immigration site fueled by the hispanic community and big business. Understand why they are for it, I would be too. You avoided the litany of unbiased sites from state, municipalities, Census, and Federal figures that just say the basic accounting numbers. Such as 61 Billion dollar price tag to the american tax payer each year and rising. Add to that the estimated 140 billion, again with a B and rising, that we provide essentials to the world's POOR and we definitly do more than all else on this freak'n Planet! And make no mistake about it_this is good but again no one ever mentions it including the recipients. And at least make sure to provide a link that at least works. I can provide you with thousands that do work but I can see it's a waste of time.

Lets face it, all we need is a common sense approach to our immigration policy. We do not want them flogged, whipped, beaten, or whatever else the radical left can think of to call us heartless bigots. Simply put, a policy that secures our borders and sets a realistic common sense set of numbers and goals. Thats it, I for the life of me cannot figure out what we are all arguing about since we all what the same thing_that is a country of immigrants and humane policies.

Ignorance is the blanket that leftists wrap themselves in to avoid the bright light of truth. This continet had no (thats 0)human beings here until they found their way here. The idea that "indians" were the first is not backed up by science or fact. The "indian" was the third wave,at best, of humans to come over from somewhere else. The A.W M. is the reason we have the freedom to lead the world away from darkness by example. A country without borders is not a country.Mexicans have no superior right to be here as they are Mexicans-NOT Americans. If we are a nation of laws then we should enforce our laws to the letter. No catch and release, no open borders. To do less is anarchy. If you don't understand what America is about read the Federalist Papers, the owners manual of a free country.

"Boorah" for Lou! The independent spirit that brings light to the greedy stain of incompetent global relativism. Those that break OUR laws would mandate that no institution, UNLESS in their favor, has right to install law or proprietorship. In truth, the sycophants would turn proprietor given half a chance, and it would become their law. They will tangle, turn, and twist fact to fiction, anything to achieve their purpose. Thankfully, there is a Lou Dobbs to speak for an ever dwindling targeted working class. "GO LOU!"

All these right wingers peddle fear. They talk about anarchy and Mexicans. These are words that they are hoping will get a strong reaction to scare people. Immigrants legal or illegal are coming here to work hard and become Americans. Once people are scared, they try controlling people with their own agenda.

Man, you are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? The "right wing" as you call it WANTS OPEN BORDERS LIKE YOU MORON! Yea, that's right, you're the ONLY ONE on the board that isn't even smart enough to figure that out. They agree with you, you PUTZ. Read a little, and watch them on fox news. The ultra conservatives, I know that's a big word for you, they're the "right wing" you keep calling everyone, you and them both think alike.

I know that's a shocker for you and you'll feel so dumb that you will have to carry on your little masquerade to the end. Look it up, you're making yourself look silly.

You really don’t get do you. Why would the neo-conservatives want OPEN BORDERS? What is in it for them? Get real, use some of your grey matter. If you have any left. Stop with your propaganda. What neo-cons are afraid of is immigrants becoming citizens and voting against them.

No, you're the one that doesn't get it!
Your comprehension skills are matched by your equally bad spelling and grammar. Here is how you responded:
Why would the neo-conservatives want OPEN BORDERS?
Duh, maybe because they are part of big business and want access to all the cheap labor forcing wages even further down. Get it? I know, you can't.
And the Libertarians, you ever hear of them? I know, to big a word for you. They also want Open borders dummy because that is a part of their creed and they are on the RIGHT!
Ron Paul ring a bell?
In extremely limited knowledge you can only think of one part of the Republican right but you are unaware of a major part that has open borders as part of policy. Ever hear of our president GW Bush? He has advocated open borders and what party does he belong to? WOuld you say he is part of the right? ROFLMAO
Open a book or two and learn you're embarrassing yourself.
Posted by:Justice is SlowMarch 8, 2008 5:11:24 PMRespond ^
It looks like you have lost your brain cells long ago. You sound like a brain stem. If big business needs cheap labor all they need to do is move to a lower wage country. GW Bush has Mexicans in his family. He does not want to separate Mexican families that live on both side of the border. He understands that people like you and “Lou Dobbs” are using Mexicans as scapegoats for all your problems.

Mr. Dobbs upsets me, and I am an independent-minded 50 something female. He reminds me of a blowfish. All he does is harp on things, he's totally negative, and offers no real solutions. I view him as simple-minded. Issues like illegal immigration just aren't that simple. Fixing one problem in this complex world(and he apparently wants to fix this one with a fence and guns, come on), begets other problems that we can only imagine. He is such a turn off. I would like to know who his followers are.

Lou is a very intelligent, highly educated American, practicing the right to speak about the hypocrisy of it all. An overwhelming majority agree, in essence, with what he is expounding. When you consider the diversity of the republic it is an astounding reality that so many understand exactly what he is talking about.
In truth, we need a compassionate and protective change to immigration. This is the land of the free and of the immigrant but that doesn't mean open borders. It NEVER has meant that. That is, essentially, what Dobbs is saying.
