Kohler might be Newt Gingrich's biggest political backer. He and his wife Mary gave $715,457 to GOPAC. His father and grandfather were Wisconsin governors; he has run and lost contests for governor, U.S. Senate, and county land surveyor. After losing the 1982 gubernatorial race to Anthony Earl, Kohler was quoted as saying, "[Earl] promised to appoint queers and he has," apparently referring to Earl's openly gay press secretary. In 1988, Mary had to apologize for saying it would be a mistake to extend the vote to black South Africans.
