The vast Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest, is at its healthiest away from population centers. Near the coast, though, eutrophication (overnutrition) from agricultural runoff is taking a toll on reefs, and there are new signs that the GBR isn't immune to large-scale disaster: The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority confirmed in March 1998 that coral bleaching was killing reefs along a 620-mile stretch of the popular Queensland coast. | ||
