The best Burmese reefs occur near the Thai border and offshore islands, but they suffer from overfishing, overcollecting, tourism, mining, and industrial growth. Corals in the Mergui Archipelago are in good shape, but sea turtles and other reef animals are being exploited there. In Burma as well as Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, boys work for up to 12 hours diving onto coral reefs and scaring reef fish into nets by banging on the corals. The London Independent reports that dozens die each year from decompression illness (the bends) or drowning.
