Covering two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti, the Dominican Republic has depleted its coastal mangroves and silted its reefs with soil washed down from its deforested uplands. Coral reefs are also threatened by coastal waters polluted with sewage, oil, and other industrial discharges.
