Tourism and pollution from Jordanian port facilities threaten reefs in the tiny Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan's outlet to the Red Sea. In addition, lobster are overfished in the Sinai region, and sharks are reportedly declining too. In December 1997 the U.S. granted $2 million to help Jordan and Israel build a coral reef "peace park" in the Gulf of Aqaba as part of the Middle East peace accord; large-scale tourism here is expected to quadruple by 2000.
