Palau's reefs, considered to be some of the most spectacular in the world, are taking hits from increasing population, sedimentation, ship traffic, and coastal construction. Uninhabited reefs like Ngeruangl and Helen are targets for poaching and destructive fishing, while Acanthaster starfish threaten reefs at Malakal. In general, Caroline Islands reefs are taking hits from overfishing and urban pollution, sewage discharge, and overharvesting of shellfish.
