Papua New Guinea has some of the world's most diverse and pristine mangroves and coral reefs, but they are slowly being pressured by commercial logging, land clearing, and related sedimentation. The PNG area is poorly surveyed, containing thousands of uncharted islands and reefs, and is one of the most biodiverse parts of the world. Unfortunately, it just got harder to study this biological cornucopia: In December 1997, the prestigious Christensen Research Institute in Madang, which had provided a state-of-the-art facility for foreign researchers studying the area's rich coral reefs, closed because of management disputes; associated scientists say they hope to reopen it in summer 1998. | ||
