Richard Lugar
Richard Lugar is a popular, fourth-term Senator, a respected statesman, and a Boy Scout among politicians. Folks say he'd make a damn fine President. Early word on the streets was that he didn't stand a chance of getting there. Time proved that word to be right; following a poor showing in the "Junior Tuesday" primary (not to mention everywhere else), he dropped out of the race.
Lugar is living proof that style reigns over substance in American politics. Want proof? Gerald Ford, George Bush, and Dan Quayle all stole vice-presidential slots from him.
All this because he's no John Kennedy. His image could be described as "thoughtful" or "smarmy" depending on your mood, and his speaking style is either "folksy and warm" or just plain "sleepy." Nonetheless, give Dick credit for hoping that the voters would grow tired of bickering children and pick a grownup to move into the Oval Office.
