F. Kenneth Bailey Jr. (with Carole) March 5, 2001 The law practice of F. Kenneth Bailey Jr. and his partner John Eddie Williams (No. 24, $621,000) was among the five firms that won a $17 billion settlement against Big Tobacco for the state of Texas. Like Williams, he opposes Republican efforts to limit lawsuits against large corporations. Bailey has a long history of supporting the Democrats, placing No. 15 on the Mother Jones 400 in 1998 with $236,000 contributions, and No. 56 in 1997 with $219,200. During the last election cycle, Bailey gave exclusively to Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, Edward Kennedy, and Charles Robb. Bailey specializes in personal-injury cases against major industries. Last December, he attended a meeting of environmentalists, family farmer activists, and animal welfare advocates working to reform the corporate hog industry. Activists say the government has failed to prosecute the industry for negligent practices that create environmental hazards and drain water supplies. -- Jennifer Karlin | | |
