When the Clinton White House announced its 1997 inauguration committee -- a prestigious appointment among the rich and powerful -- half the business leaders on the list had also made our list: The Mother Jones 400 top political contributors (March/April 1996). Among those with the honor of toasting the first family:
- Ronald Burkle (No. 45), a supermarket mogul and chairman of Yucaipa Companies, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs Grocery Co., the largest grocery chain in California. He hosted several large fundraisers last year, and gave Democrats $122,000 in 1995-1996.
- Stanley S. Shuman (No. 158), executive vice president of New York-based Allen & Co., which handles most of media mogul Rupert Murdoch's investments. Shuman gave Democrats $137,500.
- Carol Pensky (No. 236), national chair of the Women's Leadership Forum of the Democratic National Committee. Her husband, David, is co-founder of Britches Stores. She gave Democrats $30,000.
- Jonathan M. Tisch (No. 242), president and CEO of Loews Hotels. His uncle is ex-CBS owner Larry Tisch; his brother is Steven Tisch, a producer for New Line Cinema. Tisch gave Democrats $119,734.
- Robert L. Johnson (No. 296), founder and CEO of BET Holdings, formerly Black Entertainment Television. He has testified before Congress on behalf of Democratic incentive programs for minority businesses. He gave Democrats $151,500.
