At Mikey Weinstein's home in the suburbs of Albuquerque, the picture window in the living room has been twice shot out. Sometimes Weinstein opens his front door to find dead animals on his porch, feces smeared on his walls, or slashes in his tires. Men have called to threaten his daughter, women to chant rhymes about shooting him in the head, small children to inform him that he will burn in hell. To his critics, he says, "Take a number, pack a picnic lunch, and stand in line." He's not going anywhere, and neither is his 5'6" ex-Marine security guard, Shorty.

Weinstein is the middle rung in three generations of soldiers. A former Air Force JAG and White House attorney for Ronald Reagan, he has adopted a shock-and-awe approach to battling efforts by the military to impress Christianity upon American soldiers. "We have the Christian Taliban and the Christian Al Qaeda inside our military," says Weinstein, the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, "and they really have WMD, unlike Saddam."

An amateur pugilist with shoulders like a butcher block and a head like a cannonball, he several times challenged evangelical minister Ted Haggard to a boxing match. (Haggard declined.) His adversaries call him, to his great delight, "The Field General of the Godless Armies of Satan," though his friends prefer nicknames like "Ticktock" and "Motor Mouth." During one of his trademark rapid-fire, profanity-laced diatribes, he proclaimed, "Our job here is to kick ass, take names, and leave sucking chest wounds on the people who are trying to engage the machinery of the state to push their biblical worldview." To allies who suggest that perhaps Weinstein should appoint someone more diplomatic to lead the foundation, he offers, "First they will have to prove to me that what we are engaged in is a polite exchange of views" with right-wing Christians, "instead of a bloody battle that only ends with the last person standing."

Weinstein is certain that fundamentalists will stop at nothing to transform the United States military into an army of God. He notes that Officers Christian Fellowship, with chapters in every major U.S. military installation in the world, envisions—and here he quotes its mission statement—a "spiritually transformed military, with ambassadors for Christ in uniform, empowered by the Holy Spirit." The group has helped boost fundamentalist Christianity among the armed forces from a negligible presence 20 years ago to a faith currently held by 30 percent of U.S. soldiers, according to Weinstein. He adds that many of those soldiers—hardcore end-timers and Dominionists—desperately want America to invade Iran, thereby triggering the biblical prophecy of the Rapture.

This summer he uncovered plans by the Pentagon to ship "freedom packages" to soldiers in Iraq that were to contain Bibles, proselytizing material in English and Arabic, and Left Behind: Eternal Forces, a video game inspired by post-Rapture novels in which "soldiers for Christ" hunt enemies who look suspiciously like U.N. peacekeepers. Partly due to Weinstein's efforts, the packages were never sent. "It's not just the Holocaust or the inquisition or the pogroms or the nine—count 'em: nine—crusades," Weinstein cautions. "It's everything that's happened since then. Whenever a virulent form of any faith has engaged the machinery of the state, in the words of the U.S. Supreme Court, we have ended up with tidal waves of blood."

And so Weinstein is laying sand bags. He has fielded more than 6,000 complaints from soldiers who claim to have been persecuted by Christian evangelicals; 95 percent of the complaints come from mainstream Christians. Tipsters helped him catch uniformed military officers publicly endorsing an evangelical group and ferret out an anti-Semitic Bible study guide on an army base website. In September, he shunted many of the complaints into a massive lawsuit against the Department of Defense. His lead plaintiff, U.S. Army Specialist Jeremy Hall, alleges that a major at Iraq's Speicher base threatened to block his reenlistment in the Army in retaliation for organizing a meeting of atheists.

A then-Democrat, now-Republican who represented Reagan during the Iran-contra affair, Weinstein criticizes the former president for creating an opening for evangelical Christians in the military, but excoriates George W. Bush for dropping the floodgates. Bush, he says, is a "suboptimal human being." The Military Religious Freedom Foundation's supporters include refugees of the Bush years such as David Iglesias (one of the U.S. attorneys dismissed this year) and Ambassador Joe Wilson (husband of outed CIA operative Valerie Plame). "A lot of the anecdotal evidence that Mikey told me I found very troubling from a constitutional perspective," said Iglesias, who is an evangelical Christian. Wilson cites security implications: "They are proselytizing not on behalf of the Constitution of the United States and the national security interests of our country," he said, "but rather on behalf of some sort of fanatical view of end times. And they are using our army to affect that."

For Weinstein, the battle has been personal from the start. In 1973, during his freshman year at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, he repeatedly found anonymous anti-Semitic notes in his dorm room. He had nearly forgotten the experience when his son, Curtis, entered the Air Force Academy in 2003 and discovered that strains of anti-Semitism had metastasized. (By then Colorado Springs had come to be known as the "Vatican of the Religious Right" for its concentration of evangelicals.) Cadets and officers targeted Curtis Weinstein on eight or nine separate occasions during his freshman year with anti-Jewish remarks. During a football game, an upperclassman reportedly asked, "How does it make you feel to know that you killed Jesus Christ?"

That year Mikey Weinstein tried to work with the academy's leadership to reform its religious culture, but he faced disinterest from high-ranking Generals. That's when he gave up on diplomacy and launched the foundation. It began as a two-person operation in 2005 run out of his home. (He currently employs the equivalent of 25 full-time workers.) Due to his agitating that year, the air force investigated the Colorado Springs academy and substantiated many of the foundation's early findings: Football coach Fisher DeBerry had hung a "Team Jesus" banner in a locker room; Brigadier General Johnny Weida had taught a class a "J for Jesus" hand signal; and 250 faculty members and officers had signed a campus newspaper advertisement declaring, "We believe that Jesus Christ is the only real hope in the world."

Since then, the academy has created a mandatory training session on religious sensitivity, a cadet interfaith council, and a religious pamphlet for commanders. Still, Weinstein says, it has spawned a generation or more of evangelical Christians who promote their faith with impunity in the Air Force at large. Take the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, which he claims makes the academy look like the ACLU. Reportedly, at a mandatory retirement ceremony, a lieutenant colonel opened a Bible at the podium and used the occasion to conduct a sermon. (A spokesperson for the base did not respond to a request for comment.)

Weinstein continues his aggressive fight. In October, he returned to the Air Force Academy and delivered the invocation at his 30th class reunion. As he began speaking, a classmate stood up and screamed, "Jesus Christ!" Weinstein just kept talking. This month his foes discovered that he'd held a fundraiser for the foundation at the Los Angeles home of activist Jodie Evans. A few days after, Evans received a bomb threat in the mail. Weinstein long ago stopped believing that evangelicals in the military will grow more tolerant or less militant when faced with calm talk and logical reasoning. The Constitution is the only weapon there is against them, he says, and he has faith that it's a powerful one. "If you don't agree with me," he often scoffs, "then tell it to the judge."

Good for him, I am glad someone is speaking out against these radical religious right wing crazies! I was at a party years ago, and was listening to two born again Christians, who couldn't wait for the "Rapture" and how president Bush was doing a wonderful thing by attacking Iraq!!!They considered Bush as a vessel of God's will to begin the spiritual battle and the last days...Yes they read and watched the movie "Left Behind." Also a few relatives who seem to be thinking like this too. These people have some intelligence, middle class, but for some reason their intelligence stops with religion. They believe anything, as long as it's pentecostal, born again preachers garbage! I use to consider myself a Christian, but because of these nut case yahoo's who are bent on total destruction of the world, I am not a Christian...They are dangerous evil people, and I won't be associated with their agenda...The teachings of their Jesus, are totally different than what I understood. Love your neighbor, help the poor, elderly widows children...Oh and there are the old standards like, not to covet, lie, steal or kill! I like to call them the Anti-Christians, because they are doing the opposite of what Christ taught...They do not like being called the antichrists, but hey it's pretty true...I wonder if they get a new McMansion when they are taken up, raptured before the great battle???

That does it!!! We're fighting a war in Iraq, maybe Iran, and now we have our own soldiers fighting each other with words. Boy, the U.S. should really be stable by now. As far as anyone telling another, "You will go to Hell." I'd rather say, "Start believing, cause some day your're gonna need Him." On the other hand, yes, too many are promoting this end-time, doomsday scenario, and that's wrong. Jesus said himself, "No one knows the time or the day, except my Father in Heaven." Rather than all having a premillenialist attitude, how about realizing that the Book of Revelations, written by St. John in Patmos was, at that time, meant to be for the past, present, and future. Christians beware, there have been many false pastors/teachers out there spewing false doctrine. As far as atheists, they believe in nothing, and I pity them because they have no religion, no belief system to live by. Therefore, anything goes. Atheism is not a religion!!!! Therefore, it can't be categorized as such. Our soldiers out there on the battlefield--I'll bet you--pray everyday of their lives, and you know what else? If they are wounded or dieing, they're certainly not going to be calling out for help from "Satan" or Mr. Weinstein. They'll be saying, "God, help us."

Rock on, Mikey! Those bible-thumping bastards with their politics and false piety can take their self-righteous crap and fold it until it's all pointy corners and dispose of it in a manner most fitting for all I'm concerned, I used to be in the service, and the more I read about organized religion especially as it applies to our services the more I see them for the larcenous lying bastards that they truly are. A soldier stands for the Constitution. If he doesn't stand for the Constitution he's a mercenary. It's that simple. Within the lines OF the Constitution it says 'Congress shall make no law'. Ah. But they do. The Churchies have made it their multi-generational mission in life to permanently inculcate themselve into our government, which includes our services, and frankly, if that's the way they want it, then they can keep it. But, MY freedom of religion to me also represents my freedom FROM it, specifically and especially freedom from the heavy-handed political institution that it's become, and if there is indeed a hell, they're all more than welcome to travel there at maximum possible speed, and good riddance, just as long as they take all that great propaganda they publish basically at taxpayer expense right along with em. Nuff said.

These so-called "officers" are pissant TRAITORS. Its as simple as that. They are cowards who hide behind the bible to threaten people, using children in the process to do their dirty work. They took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not the bible. They should be charged with conduct unbecoming of an officer, tried and put in prison for these violation and given dishonorable discahrges from the service.

This is interesting. I have been in the military as a Christian for 6 years, and as a military contractor for a few years since, on several installations, and in the deployed environment (currently), and have never seen outward radical propaganda or public rallies to hasten the end of times. Do MANY Christian military members believe that invading Iran is a good idea? I find this hard to believe since I know thousands and couldn't name one who espouses this belief. Not to say this viewpoint isn't out there, but it is disconcerting that non-believers and enemies of the Living God judge all of Christiandom on our radical brethren who often cherry pick scripture instead of using the all. Perhaps, as Christians, we should judge all non-believers by the few who bomb churches and cut heads off. I do believe in the rapture, I do believe in end times, and I do believe that EVERYONE will kneel before Christ our King and confess that He is. I do feel the the need to share my beliefs (as do all on this board) and give you the choice. Because I DO care whether you go to heaven or hell. I DO care about your eternity. And so does God, who so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son - even if non-believers choose to ignore the call, and worship themselves.

This calls to mind the attorney in Maryland who reminded a witness that officials put their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution, not the other way around.

Aaron did you just equate the word atheist and enemies of the Living God in one sentence? Maybe the reason you can't see what the article is about is because you are part of the problem.

Not your enemy, Actually the distinction was made between the two, was it not? Non-believers AND enemies, not non-believers, THE enemies. If you are a non-believer, do you subscribe to the idea that no one is an enemy to Christians and the God we serve? The point I was making sir (or ma'am) is that there are good and bad Christians. There are those that come, claiming to be in the Name of the Lord, who are not, and are really trying to use God to get to their ends, and not God's. But there are also those who love Christ, and want you to see our perspective, because we care - whether you like to believe that or not. And there are non-believers who just want to be left alone, and live their life, and then there are those who want to attack believers at every turn. Should I, as a believer, identify all non-believers as the latter? as it seems all non-believers identify Christians as bible-thumping, fundamentalist hypocritical non-thinkers? That doesn't seem right, does it?

The Officers Christian Fellowship goal by the way is not violent or dangerous, it is quite the oppisite as with FUNDIMENTAL christianity.

I draw a parellel between the disturbing trend Mr. Weinstein is working to roll back and what happened in Pakistan over two decades ago. Under General Zia, Pakistan's religiously oriented military dictator in the 1980's, the country's hitherto secular army got irreversibly islamized and ignited a chain of events culminating in the military supported creation of the Taliban (Pakistani and Afghani) and their nourishment and development. That continued all the way until September 11, 2001, when under American coercion, General Musharraf changed course and (ostensibly) supported the US against the Taliban. But, of course, as we all know from recent events, that's not really the case - the Pakistani army was almost irrevocably islamized and even if a concerted effort is put in place to do to reverse the damage it will take a generation or two to get it back to where it was... Just imagine this: if the American regligious right were to ever morph into a militant organization (a la the Pakistani/Afghani religious right ultimately evolving into the militantly politico-religious Taliban), it is scary to think of the analogy of the evangelized US military overtly or covertly supporting this...this...Western Taliban!!!! Food for thought.....

Isn't the best way to convert non-believers to turn your other cheek to THE enemy? I don't have a problem with chaplans, but I do have a problem with giving troops video games about the end times where they shoot non-believers while yelling "God is Great!" That's not what our military is supposed to be. We've turned it into a marketing tool to sell more crucifixes and bumper fish. Life is not a videogame and Jesus is not a cheat code to win the war.

This article is in need of major corrections (not unusual for MJ). First of all, the Pentagon wasn't shipping any "freedom packages" to troops. Operation Straight Up, an independent organization working under the Pentagon's neutral "America Supports You" program, put together the packages. The Pentagon had no connection to, oversight on or endorsement of these packages. (And the description of the "Left Behind" game is grossly inaccurate as well.)

Sounds like Mikey's fighting a non-issue. In October 2005, Weinstein sued the United States Air Force for permitting proselytization by evangelical Christian officers. U.S. District Judge James A. Parker, who presided over Weinstein v. U.S. Air Force, dismissed the case, stating, "Not a single Plaintiff has alleged any personal factual situation that has allegedly impinged on that Plaintiff’s constitutional rights since the Plaintiff left the Academy.", according to Americans United for Separation of Church and State (www.au.org).

This article mentions " The Biblical prophecy of the rapture " . There is no Biblical prophecy of the rapture . John Darby , an English pastor in the Th century took passages from different books of the Bible and interpreted them together to formulate his theory . I can't wait until the Constitution of The United States of America is once again the guide for the law in this country . God help us until then .

There are perfectly acceptable (and incredibly maddening,) responses to the threats. Simply reply "My that's awfully Christian of you. BTW WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?" I would then add a quick history lesson in response to the comment of you killed Jesus. "Funny you should say that. I'm not Italian, I'm Jewish. The Romans crucified Jesus, not the Jews. Pontius Pilate, the ROMAN governor of Palestine, ordered the execution. Come on back when you actually know something about your religion."

So called "Christians?"--a president who hears voices(God talking to him?) and fundamentalists seeking the end of the world. I am a 72 year old woman and have been politically active all my adult life. Sometimes these days I feel I must be living in a nightmare or creeping hell. Unfortunately I have seen this change developing since 1970, never believed my country would take it this far. For the first time I may understand the Germans who declare they did not know what was going on in Nazi Germany. All it takes is a refusal to see or hear. For those of us who are paying attention, our efforts--think working to elect the current Congress--seem wasted. I am a Christian. I object to the abuse of my religion by these demons. I am not in good health or I would be in DC wearing pink and doing what I could to get arrested. Instead I use my checkbook and computer to do what I can. I expect to be dead soon but my beloved children and grandchildren will suffer as this gets worse. Those sad peoples suffering from genecide, burned children, casual murder, starvation, homelessness and on and on will be the world in which my children live. No one, no matter how rich, can avoid living on this planet(at least until we destroy it)with others Bush is a sociopath, surrounded by those like him. One of the characteristics of a sociopath is a lack of empathy for anyone. It is obvious that he enjoys the pain of others, is in love with risk, does not consider himself responsible for his own actions(millions dead in Iraq--including almost 4,000 of our soldiers). He is so self focused he is unable to see other people as real or deserving of respect. He knows he is smarter than anyone else and invinceable. Prove me mistaken on any one point. Why is he still in office? Why are not more of us fighting to save our constitution? Years ago someone explained to me they had nothing to fear n this country because they were protected by our constitution. Recently our government tells us "the constitution is just a piece of paper". On my car I have posted a sign that says, "The Bible is not the Constitution". Next I guess I shall have to post a sign that says, "Wake up damm it--it may already be to late" Thank you for the article on Mr. Weinstein. It helps to know about those who are struggling, and their numbers slowing are increasing. By the way will someone tell the damm idiot so called Christians to read the Bible--the Romans crucified Jesus, not the Jews, but the Bishop of Rome could not allow that to be taught. Anyway did Jesus carry around grudges? or is this just an excuse? If you are a Christian you seek to live by the New Testament,(ever notice who it is always quoting from the Old Testament?) as in the New Covenant as brought by Jesus. Jesus did not go around starting wars and trying to destroy the planet. These peachers who claim (and Presdents)God told them etc.certainly are arrogant in their stupidity. Wonder what Jerry Falwell knows now?

Thank you Edith. Everything you said is true. Having served in the U.S. Air Force during the early 1970s (during the time GW Bush went AWOL and Cheney got five deferments), I am shocked at how certain rabid, hell-fire-breathing evangelicals have poisoned and perverted the mission of our military, aberrant evangelicals with their apocalyptic, self-destructive, nation-destroying, Constitution-corrupting vision. Over thirty years ago, our military didn't have this problem. Then in 1979, Jerry Falwell formed the Moral Majority (which he later admitted was never a majority) and declared War on America (meaning: he declared war on the U.S. Constitution, the separation of church and state, and all that we hold sacred in our democracy...like freedom from tyranny, any type of tyranny, religious or non-religious). Anyway, Edith, to answer your question about where Jerry Falwell ended up, I believe he was invited to a wienie roast, with him being the wienie. Pat Robertson is another wienie on this guest list, as are the officers and students at the Air Force Academy who keep trying to ram their brand of religion down the throats of everyone else. I don't recollect Jesus Christ pulling such a stunt, but then he was a live-and-let-live liberal Jewish man, teaching about love and peace and forgiveness, about taking care of those less fortunate and feeding the poor...with no right-wing strings attached. Until, of course, Jesus ran head-on into the righteous buzzsaw of people back then who share the same mentality as those people today who are attacking Mr. Weinstein over his efforts to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the separation of church and state. Mr. Weinstein, I salute you. You are a true American patriot. And, Edith, I, too, am shocked at what our children and grand-children are getting ready to inherit...a fascist police state controlled by religious fanatics who yearn for world domination, devastation and destruction. Even I recognize anti-American, anti-Christian insanity when I see it.

JamesJay, As a bible believing follower of Christ who believes Christ commands us to share the gospel (he does after all, and he never intended the good news to be "private or personal") I too see OVERBEARING evangelism as a problem. Many who should be leading others to Christ are pushing them further away with every word. I used to shrug and roll my eyes at Christians too. I couldn't stand being preached to, and avoided it at all cost. So now, after being Saved by Christ, I look back on those times, and know that I have a responsibility to work with other Christians to effectively share faith, and be able to walk away when it is rejected. You are correct that I have lumped all nonbelievers together, and that was a mistake. I suppose it is hard to breathe on this message board as a Christian sometimes. Forgive me for that. Although I do feel as if radical non-believers (just as those radical Chrsitians) believe that all non-believers believe just as they do or should. And unfortunately as is the case in most circles, they are the most vocal. I suppose I am no different however, although I am a theological odds at times with radical evangelicals, at the heart I believe they have the right core message with the wrong approach, and often the wrong intentions.

(I am Austrian-born, European). In the last century Austria and Germany have twice seen the use of Jesus and God as war-lords, as the higher will of war. This was rampant in the Catholic Church. the biggest congregation, but just the same by the Protestant Church. The good news so far is that this definitely a thing of the past. The Catholic Church is, at least in Europe, pretty careful by now to be for peace, telling everyone they were always for peace (only a few black sheep were on side of Hitler). If a bishop in Germany would endorse war like they did in the past would provoke a big outcry. Such a guy wouldn't be a problem at all, he would achieve the exact opposite of that. The reason? Well, for one, many books were on all those related subjects.Furthermore, people got more critical, the 'church sheep' of the Catholic Church are not so easy to be shoved aside anymore, they have their say, often the upper hand. The once rampant "militant catholics", radical and raucuous groups, somehow never existed at all. Ever heard of this movement lately? If not, then history has been 'transmogified' successfully. People and the world got bad and more bad, according to the many old complaining (and mostly deceased clergy). Thing is, and that is one factor, people would just not be preached as the one who tells people "Hate thy neighbor, cheat thy neighbor, kill thy neighbor". The four Gospels of the Bible became somehting of a secular force, common knowledge. - And as matter of fact, they can also be read beyond faith and believe, secular. And quoted - so to speak, knowledgeable - like one would quote Shakespeare or whomever. And this is maybe something to learn from. For people somehow on the left who dislike wars and things like that. The four Gospels can be read and quoted like secular literature in very relaxed wsy. Jesus is after all the proclaimed "Lord" and hence can his servants be reminded of what the Lord actually said and wanted. Conveniently, the Lord makes a distinction between master and servant, so, just in case somebody can not dis- distiguish between that any laughing evil, so to speak, can give him or her a bit of a hard time.

Thank you Edith for your honest and insightful comments. I refuse to accept the doomsday vision so many people are predicting for our future - instead I choose to fight for what I believe in and hope like hell it will resonate with everyone else. I don't understand why people (namely the government) are supporting Bush, who only thinks of himself, and makes life MISERABLE for the rest of the world. Thank you Mikey for standing up for what you believe in. People seem to think only of themselves these days, and how their actions or governmental actions will effect THEM. They don't realize that we're all connected. When people allow one part of their community to be screwed over, that translates into a chain reaction where we all get screwed over. This b.s. anti-socialism is just plain stupid. Thanks to those of you who posted who are reaching out and believing in basic human rights. Oh yeah, and doing something to respect and promote them!!!

"Salvation Army" is an unfortunate title, since the article is not about the Salvation Army. As a non-believer, I was surprized to discover that my NCO's had the greatest respect for the Salvation Army, specifically because they did not tie any strings to their support for the troops. They hated the Red Cross because, unlike the Salvation Army, they tended to collaborate with the brass to deny compassionate leave or other compassionate services. This was forty-five years ago. Has it changed?

When I was a child in grade-school, each morning we would sing "Onward Christian Soldiers," recite "the Lord's Prayer" and chant the Pledge of Allegiance, without having the foggiest idea of what those words meant. But radical evangelicals (are there any other kind?) are trying to make our military into Christian soldiers, literally. I have been aware of this troubling movement for several years but did not know that anyone had organized a counter-force.

GO MIKE!!!! Within the last 10 years I have had a buddhist friend (enlisted AF) be told by a Colonel that he needed to go to church, I have been approached by an airman in uniform proselytizing at the bx. A friend saw a Navy Commander give a sermon in uniform at his church which was attended by mostly military members. Prayer meetings held at the start of the duty day and those not participating felt blacklisted, bibles studied while on duty, bibles on the desk, etc. 19 years ago I saw pins on name tags (pilots and navigators) for the anti-abortion groups. All of these things are not in line with military rules but nothing is being/has been done to correct it, so they gain momentum.

Fostering a particular religious faith or belief within the military structure should be banned and declared unconstitutional. I have reason to believe that supremacy of the Republican party is also being fostered within the military. This, too, should be banned.

Radical Christians (just as Radical sects of any religion) are all to capable of twisting the message of peace and love into destructive intent. It is sad that these Evangelicals can not even see that it was not the Romans that killed Christ, but it was the political influence that the Jewish Elders had over the Roman government. I can not think of a better argument for the speration of church and state. No to mention the revisionist history of our own country. The founding Fathers of the United States embraced the Deist belief in God (just God) to prevent any secular denomiation from holding sway over the government. Our country was founded on the right to practice your chosen religion...not the right to force your chosen religion on others. I was raised a Christian, but none of my teachings reflect this strong arm approach to spreading the word. It is unfortunate that to overcome their insecurities they continually attempt to de-mystify God in order to turn a belief into a mandate. They seem to forget that God is limitless, and when they continue to define him according to their image, they are limiting him to their hateful little view. So sad that they have totally missed the message. I support Mr. Weinstein. He is the true messenger of a God of justice.

I have been an active Christian for forty plus years and a military member for over thirty-five years. I provide these credentials up front in the hopes that what I say will have some credibility. First, the military I serve in has gotten more conservative since 1972. Second, it has become more overtly religious in the last twenty or so years. I believe the expression "that there are no atheists in a foxhole" is largely true. I've seen it manifesting itself during tours in Bosnia and Iraq. In the last seven to eight years I have noticed a disturbing trend. I have bee a part of many religious services and Bible study groups nad have noticed that they have become more conserbvative, increasingly strident in language and tone, less accepting of dissenting religious or worldviews and less forgiving of anyone who does not fully accept what they are selling. While in Iraq, I was told during one Bible study that I was no longer welcome to participate until I "accepted Jesus as my personal saviour and accepted the Bible as the one, onlyt and true word of God." I found it disconcerting that as a student and reader of the Bible for nearly forty years, I was seen as ignorant of the text and an apostate. In the end, my personal experience it that I will not attend military religious events because they do not speak to me as a Christian, a soldier or an American.

Born and bred in a catholic orphanage I know from whence I speaketh. In religion there is a total abdication of reason and absolute acceptance and dedication to mystical ignorance and blind faith in some ancient and barbaric teachings that are of the dark ages. Out of fear of death, lack of intelligence and "divine" ignorance a very small portion of the American populace has been led to believe that evangelical Christianity is the salvation for our planet. There is no doubt in my mind that these hard core, right wing, Christian fanatics will say or do anything, no matter how un-Christian and barbaric and, or dehumanizing, to promote their zealous, fanatical ends. Obviously these creatures are truly god-less as they hypocritically spout their own “rapture” with the "one true living god”; sounds like Ule Brenner in the movie, "The Ten Commandments" as he rages against the one true living god being god. There are so many different religions and so many whacked out religious fanatics on this planet it’s a wonder the human race made it our of the dark ages. Of course with Bush in the White House these past 6.5 years it seems we have returned to the Spanish inquisition and the medieval crusades at the same time. The thing is with so many millions of people believing their different god is god and their different religion is the one true religion you would think that intelligent people in the 21st century, with all the info and knowledge at their disposal, would stop and think before they endorsed any one religion or god, or any god at all. But if you must have God and you want the true God, a God of Love and Life then I shall give God to you. This God does not endorse war for any reason no matter what the crazies say. For that matter this God doesn’t even endorse the human race, this God set everything in motion, and, because of the Perfection, never had to bother with anything again! Even so, behold the firmament above and about you, realize the universe came into existence from a big, primordial explosion and accept that the one Living God is the Creator and the Creator gave all the universe Life out of the Creator’s Love but the Creator don’t want a thing to do with us or from us! We are too, well, ungodly, too unstable, too whacked out, too fanatical and too desperate for Perfection. We can’t even get along with our own species, have decimated countless species on this planet and are responsible for atrocities and calamities the likes of which make biblical wrath pale in comparison. No, no, God does not want a thing to do with us and the Creator doesn’t need the human race for anything, period! I’m not exactly sure what the Creator is about these days after the big bang but I’m pretty certain the Creator is not involved in any manner, shape or fashion with mankind! So instead of beating your chests and preaching some ancient religious dogma about repentance and salvation and leading the human race onto Armageddon try and become a Christian in the ethical sense and stop killing your fellow man; and get a life!

this is one of the consequences of a professional millitary. you lose any connection with the broader spectrum of thye population and instead draw in segments of the gun culture, fundementalists and "lost" citizens. while I do not advocate a draft, since a large military needs something to do, fight wars as an example, I am concerned that the citizenry has not paid much attention to what is really going on here. we are experiencing what is happening in many countries and that is radicalization of institutions. I wish. I believe this is a result of the ageing of boomers who have been since their youth more concerned with themselves than the broader populace. During the Vietnam war they were concerned about their being drafted, not so much about those that were there. After the war, the process continued. When Reagan was elected they cared not a whit about his firing of the air traffice controllers, his denigration of poor people, "welfare queens", increased taxes on middle class (SSI increases) as long as they got whatever piece of the pie they wanted. The same went for the administrations of GHWB, Clinton and to the current administration. The only clamor I hear from people is for lower taxes, more in my pocket and protect my backside as long as you ask me to do nothing that will cause me some discomfit. American's educational system is broken, our news media has abdicated it's watchdog role, and we keep reelecting professional politicians who are only concerned with their own wellbeing. Time to move to my undiscovered island.

God bless you Edith. A lot of good posts here. Please remember that Hitler and his cadre believed in God and that their cause was holy. When Roosevelt died they considered it proof that God was on their side. I have a brother in the service (lifer, officer) who believes completely that there is going to be a 'holy' war. He does not call himself a fundamentalist or fanatical. Yet believes that the deaths of millions, even billions is inevitable. I have to remind him that this is opposite of what Jesus told us. I firmly believe that the Christian taliban have a severe and perverse hold on our nation and military. History shows it leads to nothing but death and destruction. When Bush began the march to the war in Iraq I turned to my Christian family to march with me for peace. Every one of my Christian family members wanted nothing to do with it. My two siblings who became Baptists cast aspersions at me for following Jesus's teachings and claim the followers of Satan, aka Iraqi's, should be killed. It broke my heart. How people can go to church, claim faith in Jesus and yet lust for blood. Thanks Mr.. Weinstein. Thanks Mr. Harkinson. I grew up in a very Irish-Catholic home. Both of my parents emigrated from Ireland to America. They had a very deep faith in God and truly LIVED their faith. They also had hearts as big as mountains and those strong, true, kind hearts governed their lives more than anything. Isn't that what being a true Christian is all about? Doesn't the Bible say: Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. IT DOES NOT INSIST ON ITS OWN WAY; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth....." My parents are dead and gone, but I know that, today, they would have viewed these right-wing, so-called Christians as pure heathen devils.

This tiny man's mission of hate and intolerance will not stop God's Word. Scripture instructs any honest Christian to spread The Lord's message, which is exactly what these brave soldiers are doing. This is just another example of a the left-wing, secular-progressive who can't stand to see another person have a life of meaning and depth. Mr Weinstein, like so many unenlightened, hate-filled others, hate their country and what it provides. They'd rather suck the life out of everything this country - created by and for the one TRUE God - and offer this kind of intolerance back. These soldiers who put their life on the line every day for God's will are doing more than this petty little man will ever do. And no matter how hard he tries, he will never stop The Lord from seeing his work done and blessing those who follow His Word. I'll say a prayer for Mr Weinstein and for all of you who seem to be lured into is false teaching - I know you are all too afraid and ashamed to talk to God yourself and confess the life of sin you live, so I'll do it for you.

Weinstein's "laying sand bags?" Challenging ministers to fights? Willfuly engauged in "bloody battle with the last person standing?"

Sounds like Weinstein is the one preparing for the end times, not evangelicals.

I was upset to find the article gives direct links to Weinstein's one-man crusade websites, but I had to search on my own to find out more about the Officers Christian Fellowship.

I am glad I did. As a Naval Officer, I am eager to join this group, and encourage religious faith and its free exercize by my men. Radical zealots like Weinstein reduce all of Christianity to a bunch of extremist evangelicals, and have no place in today's military. His father would be ashamed of him.

Our Founding Fathers would be distrubed by this man's attempts to debase thier views on church and state. All of them were Christian to some degree, funded Bible disbursion to the American Indian people, and realized that while successful government should not erect a state religion, should still realize the importance of faith in America, and foster and utilize its growth.

For more reading on what our Founding Fathers thought of religion, I invite everyone to read up on The Library of Congress' segment 'Religion and the Founding of the American Republic', thank you!
