Paul Stamets and the Holy Grail of Mushrooms
A renowned mycologist's hunt for the mushroom that could help save the world.
Mycologist Paul Stamets is on a quest to find the agarikon, a rare fungus that some believe could cure small pox, TB, and even swine flu. In 2009, Stamets traveled to Desolation Sound in southwest British Columbia in search of the Agarikon. Writer Andy Isaacson accompanied him and took some of these photos (the rest are from Stamets himself). To read Isaacson's profile of Paul Stamets, which appeared in the November/December 2009 issue of Mother Jones, go here.
