Yinchuan, Ningxia

A woman wearing handkerchiefs outdoors is a common sight in the Yellow River region because of the ubiquitous sand and dust from the desert.

Plz getting info. sensibly , do not distort stories or pictrues. If it is windy in some cities of China. Women always wear handkerchiefs when they ride bicycles. Just see the background of the pic. U will find out what was going on there. Plz do not be 'the big mouth'.

Then why is there consistent footage of men AND women walking down the street, on bicycles, and getting sick in nearly all Chinese cities? (Not just tourist photos, but professional journalists?!) Why does the lady in the picture wear the scarf around her mouth rather than in her hair if she is worried about the wind?

Titling this photo essay "pollution in China" as a caption to this photo (woman with handkerchief around her nose and mouth) is misleading and very disappointing considering the source. The woman wears the kerchief so as not to breathe sand.

but isn't the sand caused by man -made desertification?
