"This was Rich Ramirez' office door. He was totally beloved in the newsroom," Gee says. Ramirez was found dead in the backyard of his Livermore home on June 20, 2007, with a knife wound in his midsection. He was 44. It was reported that Ramirez had been worried about the paper's plans to eliminate about 40 newsroom jobs, but had been told it was unlikely he'd be laid off.

It's sad to think that the man committed suicide because of job loss. I felt badly when I was forced to quit my job at an ad agency because I was too old (though that's not quite how they put it. However, it turned out to be the best thing I've ever had happen to me. Now I work out of my home for a company who loves what I do for them and have never been happier.
Of course, after Bush heads back to Crawford, I'll be a lot happier, but that's a different issue than a man committing suicide. I'm just sad that he had been overseeing stories for years about the changes taking place in the "information age," but he couldn't change his own paradigm to prepare himself for the moment when the inevitable force of change swept him away as well.
I was sad when I was forced out of my old job, but I had faith that I would find another niche where my skills and experience would be considered valuable. Indeed, life is nothing BUT change, so as sad as it is that traditional newspapers are dying, we need to remember that, as corny as it sounds, when one door closes, another door opens ...if we remain optimistic.
Our fear of the unknown usually turns out to be far worse than the actual reality that waits for us in the dark that lies ahead. We must keep moving forward one step at a time. The pain will subside and then, as the new dawn comes, finally, one is amazed at how clearly one can see the possibilities.
It's too late for this advice to make a difference for Mr. Rameriz, but maybe it will help the next person who is bracing him or herself for the inevitable tsunami to arrive with his or her name on it.
