There is an amazing push from the media/fashion industry/Hollywood to glorify near-anorexia as The Only Standard Of Beauty. Personally I prefer the Timeless Beauty of the fuller female figure, but it's just a matter of different strokes for different folks. While I agree we need to cut back on obesity (how about losing HFCS?), we also need to be more inclusive in our understanding of Beauty. It seems all models and actresses are far thinner than their real world compatriots, and we are sending a bad message to our children if we insist that only size 0 is sexy. I submit icons like Monroe and Mansfield would never be cast in films today.

I attended an antique show this weekend and quietly observed 3000 people or so and without expressing any disgusting words or behavior, made a mental note : about 20 ladies in the lot, that I would like to hold their hand and feel good about.

To anyone really, since I've seen plenty of men who fit the same proportions. For me it's not just a matter of aesthetics, it's also attitude. I was overwieght as a child, as an adolescent and most of my adult life, and thankfully I am no longer. I've done my fair share of binge eating, yo-yo dieting, what you end up with is a primary relationship with food in one way or another. I don't need a skinny model, I don't abide by Madison avenue standards, however what I don't want is a three way relationship with my prospective partner and an eating disorder.
Personally, I'm sick of shows and articles defending the "lifestyle" of morbid obesity. Obesity actually is a public health problem-- my tax dollars pay to retrieve a disproportionate number of morbidly obese people from auto accidents, pay for their medicaid and medicare bills as their hearts collapse and their diabetes progresses, and to accommodate their special space needs in public transit spaces. A healthier electorate will result in fewer wasted tax dollars. There's nothing inappropriate about Lee's post. Being unattractive to most other people is one of the consequences of being morbidly obese. You don't like it, hit the gym and lay off the Fritos! And don't tell me that people aren't educated enough to make good dietary choices, either. Oprah will tell you once a week how to lose weight. People just need to stick to it.
I was having a cigarette one day and noticed a guy cleaning up leaves around my building with a leaf blower. It got me thinking about the ways in which generating energy through the burning of fossil fuels affect obesity.
Using a leaf blower instead of raking the leaves.
Using a snow blower instead of shoveling the snow.
Using a gas/electric powered lawnmower instead of a push lawnmower.
Driving to reach a destination instead of walking or riding a bike.
Families having to live on two incomes instead on one leading to less cooking and more eating out. People resort to fast food for a number of reasons. 1.) Its fast and convenient. 2.) Its comfort food. People are so stressed out and not combatting that stress with more sleep, which itself is (I believe) linked to obesity.
Americans will have to make adjustments to their lifestyles if they want to start trimming the weight. The only downside to that is that we've gotten so accustomed to having machines make our lives easier that it would make such a transition difficult. That problem is made worse by the fact that our biggest addiction is our addiction to convenience.
One easy way for everyone to lose weight would be realistic food prices. Lets pay the people who grow our food real wages and we would see how much of a obesity crisis would exist after that.

Today I saw, twice, the Milky Way commercial with the voiceover of a lady saying she needs the comfort of "A7." Is it any wonder a significant number of us have problems with compulsive eating? When we quit using food as a drug - I'm guilty too - that will help.

People just need to learn to eat and drink properly. Its the constant battle with fast food and unhealth, on the go living that has caused a rise in obesity. People also seem to think there is some miracle cure to losing weight... if only things were that easy!
